I’ve been reading a couple of journal entries over the last couple of days about comments and I thought it might be useful to share RedBubble’s perspective (well actually my perspective) on the topic. I think there are two principal benefits to comments on RedBubble: 1. It can provide the creator (photographer, writer, painter etc) with encouragement and affirmation … and we see this encouragement and affirmation as one of the central elements of the site. With positive reinforcement and encouragement we build up each other’s confidence to express our creative talents … and by extension we’re encouraged to expand and explore our creative expression. We’re big believers in the power of positive reinforcement – and we want to help bring creative expression back into the mainstream of our lives (and society more generally). 2. It can help us all appreciate and understand what we are looking at / reading. I often find my appreciation of a work deepens / changes when I read how other people have interpreted it. One of the misconceptions with comments is that they help drive up sales or ‘popularity’. When we looked at the relationship between sales and comments in September last year (see graph below) we found there was no relationship between the number of comments a person makes and the number of sales they make. I’ll try to run the numbers again over the next few weeks – but anecdotally I thinks still holds true. / (The graph shows total sales on the x-axis and to total comments made on the y-axis as at 26 Sep 07 for a selection of some of RB’s top sellers) One of the directions we’d prefer to avoid with commenting is for it to become some sort of competitive sport. In my mind I’d like the RedBubble experience to be about meaningful interactions. For example, when I’m giving comments I try to provide more than just a couple of words – I like to comment on how the work has impacted on me. I might spend five to ten minutes looking at a work before I comment. When someone comments on one of my works I don’t feel the need or requirement to go and comment on one of their works – but I often do them the courtesy of dropping by their work to check it out – and when I feel so moved I make a comment. I think at the end of the day it’s all about enjoying the site … if it ever becomes a burden (e.g. when you feel the need to respond to every single comment) something is not going right. My view is that if it’s not fun – folks will burn out. Anyway … they’re just my thoughts. I’d be interested on your responses / reflections. - Peter

It’s that time of year when the schools put on their Christmas concerts and something I have been looking forward to ever since my 4-year-old son came home from school in late November saying “I am Joseph and you will be very proud” (a well rehearsed line fed by his teacher, which also turned out to be more complex than those he had in the actual play!). Now I don’t have much experience of other schools in the UK, but I had heard that photography at school plays had been banned in a number of areas. I was therefore delighted to find out that in these paranoid times my son’s school had a more enlightened view and understood that parents might want to capture the event for posterity. After all, how much misuse of images of children dressed as sheep, donkeys and generic middle-eastern characters can there be! Baby Jesus is currently being treated for cerebral oedema…

Does anyone here play Ruins of Chaos? It’s an online text-based game. If you do play – I’d like to add you to my buddy list so we don’t attack each other If you don’t, and you’d like to find out more – here’s a link http://www.ruinsofchaos.com/recruit.php?uniqid=1fexe45l It’s a game where you train soldiers, buy armor, attack other players etc., but I like it because for me, it’s more of a strategy/logic activity.

I have donated three of my fiery images for the use of Phoenix Appeal which means that I receive no profit from the purchase of these images – rather it will go via this user to bushfire relief. I encourage you all to buy or donate money to this cause – many lives have again been devastated by fire – many more will be I fear. This is an opportunity to help. I have updated my descriptions of the originals of the three images I have donated to link to the Phoenix Appeal versions so that no-one buys the wrong ones.

IMPORTANT AND BIG NEWS! Over the last few nights I became the new ‘Head Admin’ for the Redbubble Adelaide/SA group upon Facebook. It happened out of a conversation about administrators upon our Redbubble group, and was quite unexpected … yet I am glad to take on the role! Therefore: If you are a registered member on Facebook AND a Member of Adelaide/SA on Redbubble, / I encourage you to join Redbubble Adelaide/SA on Facebook ! / Then you can publicise your Redbubble gallery ! Consequently I’m now looking for FIVE new Admin’s to join me on both Redbubble and Facebook. I need your help to… / ... [1] regularly moderate artwork submitted on Redbubble; / ... [2] help run the existing roles upon Redbubble that have lain dormant for the last six months; / ... [3] choose from members submissions for a new photo image to represent the Facebook group; / ... [4] help think of great ways to publicise, market, and promote our artists upon both Facebook and Redbubble; / ... [5] and readily take on new duties as they arise! (Finding sponsorship/prizes, running redbubble competitions, etc) I hope I haven’t scared anyone, but rather inspired members to become more actively involved with the ONLY group that is fully dedicated to displaying the character, landscape, architecture, heritage and life of South Australia. I look forward to seeing you all Facebook!

If there’s one thing that pisses me off the most – and people who know me, know that i don’t get pissed off easily – is the fact that animal rights are in danger. I am one of the biggest animal fans out there, and a animal rights pacifist at heart, to the core. Animals deserve the same rights as humans, and should be on a equal level when it comes to endangerment and caretaking. There is no right in one’s human mind, thinking humans are the better entity’s / creatures above animals. Sure, they undoubtly lack the same skills a human has. But so do small infants and children. When they are in danger, we humans jump on the bandwagon to protect them. We co-exist next to animals; who gave you the mortal law to think you are above any other creature? The reason i am typing this is because, in a short period of time, a prime minister is going to append a new law in the Netherlands, which undermines the laws of animals even more, giving the bio industry the favor at hand. I don’t have to explain in greater depth what that means; more testing on animals, more killing of animals without tranquilizers, even making animals more and more brainless eating machines with a short life-span to feed US! Luckily, there are some sane humans around – like me – who share my same thought. Why, in the rest of the world are there these ‘Animal Cops’, and in the Netherlands, NONE. Sure, they have Customs stopping ‘some’ animal cruelty (by confiscating a mere percentage of incoming goods), and even the AID (General Inspection Services) has only 12(!) animal inspectors (with most of them non-capable of enforcing police-law) in the whole country. But clearly, that’s not enough. These SANE, same-thinking-brothers have set up an official petition to stop this ridiculous law at Dierenwet Now i know that most of you are from other countries, and are not even from the Netherlands. To those who are; please sign that petition. To those who aren’t; i’ve let you be aware of the fact that this exists.

I have to rant for a moment. There are some people on Deviant who think they’re king. Just because they have high page views. The rant for today is for this guy, on this work > http://johnperi.deviantart.com/art/A-walk-on-the-wild-side-129096233 I stated that i find his ‘watermark’ ‘off’ and ‘amateuristic’. I didn’t say anything about his work. He manages to give this load of bullshit response – which is really over the top, and has nothing to do with my remark – and just ‘bans’ me from his page, denying me to comment on his page. Now let me ask you this; isn’t his watermark a sad and pathetic thing? C’mon, it’s like, made in this cheap Helvetica font, really taking the photo down. What’s even more sad, is the ban. It shows how people like him are pissed off so easily, can’t take shit anymore, and just want they’re cock stroked. Sad little French turd he is.
