This is an amazing place. I’ve been here two days, gotten some wonderful feedback within minutes, still trying to find all the ins and outs. So much available, I’ve been thrilled to join RedBubble. I haven’t figured out how to provide the right size of my photos of my artwork to make it into the store, but I’m working on it. Apparently everything’s too small, or blurry. I do need to take better shots. / My heartfelt thanks to all those who’ve gone to look at my work. I’ve only started exploring all the beautiful artwork here, really top flight. This is one of the most encouraging groups I’ve ever run into; such a salve to the heart to hear your comments.

I went to the 2009 Geelong Rodeo on the weekend at the Showgrounds with Rosemaree and her sister Deb, who showed me what rodeos are all about (thanks girls). What they didn’t tell me was how dusty they were!! I went home covered in it !! / We were also lucky enough to meet a couple of rodeo photographers, one of them Barrie Collins, who laughed at my dirty face even before he knew who I was…. / the other was Keith French, a nicer man you will not meet, he was kind enough to lend me a spare battery (I wasn’t very well prepared), and also, once it got dark and I knew my 100-400 wouldn’t cope with the shocking light, he offered me the use of his 70-200 2.8 ~ now how many event photographers do you know who would do that for a complete stranger?! / Check out his website ~ www.rodeophotos.com.au / Also a thank you to Peter Redmond for being in the area and bringing me a spare CF card when I thought I was going to run out. Rodeo History Over A Century Old Rodeo was a part of Steamboat Springs’ culture even before the town was incorporated over 100 years ago; and it’s a tradition that is alive and well today. / No one knows for sure when Steamboat Springs hosted its first organized rodeo competition, but mentions of competitive rodeo events in the local newspaper, the Steamboat Pilot, date back to at least 1898. Looking through historical files, it seems that no local event was complete without some type of rodeo competition. / A clipping from the July 6, 1898, Steamboat Pilot writes about The Hot Time celebration of 1898. This event included an orchestra, literary exercises, a dance, running races, and, of course, bronco riding. The article included descriptions of riders being thrown from the broncos and said, “This feature was far more interesting than had been anticipated.” In September 1899, the paper wrote about Game Day, reporting that the multi-day event drew about 3,000 people to Steamboat Springs to watch rough riding, steer roping, pony racing, shooting contests, running races and dances. / Back at the turn of the 20th century there was no rodeo arena in Steamboat, but the area where the current rodeo arena stands near the Yampa River was the location for many rodeo events. / In the early 1900s, Steamboat also developed a reputation for rearing some of the toughest bucking animals in the rodeo, making some of the animals as famous, if not more, than their riders. Some of Steamboat’s famous horses from that era include Pin Ears, Carrie Nation and General Pershing. Back then Tuffy Wren, Bill Corbett, Kid Vaughn, Walter Long, Emery Clark and Lawrence Marshall were popular rodeo heroes. Today Steamboat’s rodeo arena hosts rodeo legends, hall-of-famers, world champions, circuit champions, season champions, as well as raw rookies. / The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series is the most successful weekly rodeo in the country. While the roots of rodeo in this modest little Northwestern Colorado ranch town/world class ski resort trace back over 100 years, the humble beginnings of the weekly rodeo were in the mid 1970’s as the “Friday Night Jackpot.” Contestants gathered once a week to compete for their accumulated entry fees. / By 1982, the Jackpot Rodeo was in danger of disappearing due to money problems. Local condominium manager, Steve Dawes, felt like the rodeo was too important to let die, so he stepped forward with his checkbook and his staff to add a little business expertise to the operation. Within a couple of years, the Jackpot Rodeo grew to include Saturday night as well as Friday and the Steamboat Springs Rodeo Series name was coined. / In 1988, the first and last weekends of the 10-week series were sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and were known as Ski Town Stampede I & II. With the success of its first two forays into ProRodeo, the committee decided it was time to go “all pro.” In 1989, the name was changed to Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series and has been fully sanctioned by the PRCA ever since. / Years and years of effort and improvement were recognized by the rodeo industry in 2002. By a vote of contestants, stock contractors, contract personnel and other rodeo committees, the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series was selected from approximately 500 PRCA rodeos that are neither indoor rodeos nor large (based on their added money) outdoor rodeos as 2002 Small Outdoor Rodeo of the Year. The Board of Directors recognizes that this ultimate honor in rodeo was not for a particular weekend, or even a particular year, but truly amounts to a Lifetime Achievement Award. Brent Romick had a hand in building the platform that launched the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series and so it was named after him.

Went to my first rodeo today! Never been to one before, let alone taking pictures at one. Please check them out and let me know what you think. It was indoor, at Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee, Florida. Click the link below to see the rodeo pictures collection. Will be adding more as I sift through them. Rodeo Photography — Recently I did a project for work investigating Twitter and how we can use it for marketing. Well I know there are plenty of people who don’t like it, but I have become quite attached. It also has increased the views of my photography. I still haven’t sold anything, fingers-crossed though that someday I will. Anyways, if you’d like to check out my Twitter site, please click here — It’s been a while, I was in a slump for a bit but I have had a few features. Special thanks to Akhal-Tekes, Arabs & Thoroughbreds for featuring the following photos: / Jockeys / Wild Forest Cat — Special thanks to United States Challenges Only for featuring… / Wild Forest Cat It also came in 7th in their Sports challenge from May. With a few days on my hands… art students are on their own for a couple of days…I went browsing through my collection here at RB and came up with another calendar for 2010. / “Just Killin’ Time” Is a collection of abstract Cowboy and Horse captures I took while I was attending a local Team Roping event. / I have had people ask me why I don’t take a picture of the whole Horse or Cowboy and my only answer is that I take pictures of what is most interesting to me…many times it can also make your photography timeless….plus it is just an artist thing to try and capture an interesting subject that engages you… / Hope you enjoy…sorry you missed the 15% of sale that RB had running for awhile, wish they would run it for a while longer…I personally bought 6 calendars during this time as I started chipping away at my Christmas List! Thanks for viewing! / Susan
