It was an early morning start. I was meeting a friend for a sunrise shoot. The location was all planned out, so was the time – unfortunately we still missed each other. It was my fault. I went to the South end of the beach, he was at the Northern end. / / Sometimes a mistake can actually turn into luck, and this was the case here. A wonderfully still morning, beautiful light and the moon to boot….. / / I did eventually meet up with my friend after he finally answered his mobile, but wow was I glad I overshot the Northern Entrance…. I believe this was my first early wake up to go out and shoot a sunrise seascape. Only a couple of weeks back we were at Narrabeen with friends. It was a late afternoon and I just could not believe the colour. I was determined to come back with my camera. That particular morning was just magic. Perfectly still, mild and the colours did not dissapoint. Photo Taken: 23-Jan-2006 / Time: 50:30am / Conditions: Great sunny morning / / / / / / / / / / / / Some other seascape art: / / / / / / /
A planned get-together with a mate fell through. So instead my son and I went to North Narrabeen beach and took advantage of some magical light and conditions to capture the coast during winter time. / For a very long time this image was my favourite. I was just amazed at how much light was absorbed by the wooden planks, contrast that with the smooth silky water. Sydney is not only blessed by a beautiful coastline providing us with countless beaches, but also some of these beaches have a “rock pool” at the headland. These rock pools provide a great place for the locals to take a dip in the ocean without the waves. Now for something completely different. An oldie but a goldie from the analouge vaults of a mama swimming in a rock pool down Coogee way. This is a straight b/w film capture with no tricky stuff done to it. It is as it was when I snapped it. I’ve always been taken with this matronly look possibly because I’ve always been a bit on the bony side but maybe because the woman in this picture looks like a mama. I love her to bits.
I bought some Singh Ray filters mid November. I did not get a chance to try them out until after Xmas – says a lot about the mad rush leading up to this period of the year. After using them I am in awe as to how effective they are. 7 exposure HDR photograph with white balance adjustment. This was taken on Crosby Beach, and features one of Anthony Gormley’s “Another Place” statues.

Lee dancing on the cliff edge. The colour in the top cloud is the moon halo. The good news for this shot was that this lovely rockpool lined up beautifully with the moonpath. The bad news was that the rockpool was perched on the edge of a cliff and between the top of the pool and the edge of the cliff there was only an 8” sliver of rock for Lee to stand on. Plus it was blowing a gale (that blur at Lee’s back is her hair blowing in the wind and the chill factor was less than 10 degrees). All Lee had on was this strapless flimsy dress and she kept having to hop out of shot to put her coat and boots on to warm up. And then the idiot photographer would say things to her like “Can you do some rotating pirouettes?” and she had to remind him “You know I’m standing on the edge of a cliff here!” and then shed did them anyway!! It certainly helped that Lee used to be a gymnast but brave or what!! So who would like to volunteer to be my next model :-) Shot off the Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney Australia. Another shot from the edge of the rocks at Narrabeen facing the incoming tide.. I love the way the water swirls around through the rocks and looks like fog with the longer exposures. EXIF / Date: 17/09/2008 / Time: 6:29am / Aperture: f/22 / Shutter: 1.8 seconds

Another dusk shot of Mt Cameron from the Green Point Beach area at Marrawah. The rock shelf is made from gazillions of tiny broken shell pieces and is covered with seaweed. The rockpools are full of blue, orange and purple starfish and different types of sea snails, sponges and seaweeds, shrimps and little fish. There are blue ringed octopus here so be careful if you go. I’m temporally challenged so dawn shots are rare for me but a couple of times a year near to daylight saving change-overs the sun stops getting up at a silly hour and becomes rather more civilised. I was lucky enough to shoot this after a night of rain so the rock pool on top of the cliffs was full. Shot off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney. This shot of my old Praktica camera was taken with my dslr back up Samsung GX10 through my 60 year old vintage Kodak Brownie Reflex… Art imitating art imitating art? :) Gave the local beach walkers something to ponder over as they passed by anyways ;) More Through the Viewfinder (TtV) Images
