It was an incredibly warm December. High winds and storms had delayed my meeting, so I spent the afternoon with my camera, searching the streets for the perfect photos. Lunch had been a bit of french food, served on my backpack while sitting on the outcropping on the south end of central park. I’d only just finished dinner, falafel from a stand on the street, when I looked up. I could see the Top of the Rock up there, with blue light streaming up the building. The perfect photo.

I was in New York recently on business and managed to find a little time to wander around. I walked up to Rockefeller Center and took some shots. Unfortunately I didn’t have a tripod so the night shots were a little difficult, but I did manage to get this one of Radio City Music Hall. I really like the Deco feeling of this shot. I wish there had been just a bit more steam or fog. The shot was originally in color, and while the signage looked nice I think the black & white makes a better image. I did some minor dodging and burning to darken some of the darker areas a little more and lighten some of the lighter areas. I added a platinum tint and some film grain. the first, and so far only, snow fall in new york city this winter. it was so beautiful and magical to be in the biggest city in the united states and one of the acclaimed greatest cities in the world and watch as it transformed into sparkles. i’m also really glad my new camera held up and didn’t get any cold or water damage :) / / this is looking up through the lighted branches of one of the trees lining the front of rockefeller center. i’m not sure what the buildings in the picture are, but i think they add a lot to the image. / / canon rebel xsi (450d)

This is the top part of a low-relief art deco panel above the main entrance to the GE Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The panel, called “Wisdom”, was sculpted by Lee Lawrie in 1933. It can be seen from Fifth Avenue but I decided to photograph it standing below it because I wanted to capture the building as well. (Yes another neck-craning shot.)
