Karön Melillo …, less than a minute ago / i completely relate to much of your writing and message: / Alone / Written by: / Ronald Rockman These are my own thoughts: the ice and sleet rain pierces my very soul as it strikes against my face, / still i push forward in the driving rain, / bearing all its intensity and although it is freezing, i feel the heat, a freezing cold wind like a blizzard blows from the north, / it tries to persuade me to turn back, and yet i deny it’s wishes, and greet it and submit to its powers and might, / determined i continue on my quest and my journey, when the lightning strikes, i am blinded for a moment and deafened by the / immense power of it, but this does not stop me or slow me down, and all is illuminated the width and the breadth, the height and the depth, / the world and all it’s glory is illuminated for a bright and shining moment, and in this moment i am enlightened and inspired, / i see my destiny !! ~ Karön Melillo d’Vega

  • Shirtheads - featuring Chris Wahl
    by caanan

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / !http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/u…

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / Chris Wahl is another one of those unstoppable bubblers who had a lot of funky tshirts to choose from / / but it was Paper Rock Scissors / / that ended up inspiring in me yet another simple, (and kinda nasty) gag. Think of it as a no-budget Curiosity Show. :oP Enjoy! What do you think are the decisions people use this game most for? What should be solved using Rock Paper Scissors? Usually, I think it’s used to decide who gets the short end of the straw. Like who’s gonna do the dishes, or who’s gonna climb the fence to retrieve the ball from Old Man Cooper’s haunted mansion, things like that. / Soccer matches should definitely use them on 0-0 draws. Definitely makes more sense than those stupid penalty shootouts. Maybe in the boxing ring as well, although the gloves might pose a problem. What inspires you, day by day? Creatively, the internet is a bottomless source of inspiration. The amount and array of fantastic art and artists inspires me to no end. Actually using the ‘stumble’ button on my Firefox browser is also a great source of inspiration. You never know what little gems you’re going to find. What do you enjoy drawing the most. Why? Besides women and monsters and the usual nerdish fare, I enjoy drawing the human face- eyes and mouths especially. You can convey so much emotion and character when those two features are drawn well. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy drawing caricatures as well. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? Back when I used to work at Disney Australia, I used to think I was some big rebel walking around the Disney corridors in a ‘Mickey Rat’ t-shirt. Most likely they just thought I was some big smartarse (and they were right). / Some honourable mentions though would go to my DC Vertigo Chris Bachalo Death shirt, My Cure Disintegration shirt and when I was younger, my Ghostbusters shirt. All faves. Who should come back from the dead as a zombie, and what would happen? Maybe the late actor, Jack Palance? His bone structure and villainous ham acting would be perfectly suited to the task. He’d be the best one-handed pushup zombie around. What did you want to be when you were 6? Unsurprisingly, I wanted to be a comicbook artist, since collecting comic books were a big part of my life growing up. I eventually realised I didn’t have the patience to do so and just stuck to illustration instead. I think I also wanted to be a puppeteer at one stage as well. What’s the funniest thing ever? A toss up between my 4 year old dancing, Bert and Ernie and cartoon gags on the internet involving airline safety art. If you were asked to create a new law for Australia, what would it be, and how would it be enforced? A no mullet law, especially on young children. Ever seen a 3 year old with a full-on chullet half way down their back? Very tragic. It’s a form of child abuse I tells ya! Under the new laws, asking for some ‘business in the front, party in the back’, ‘hockey hair’, a ‘chicago neckwarmer’ or a ‘MacGyver style’ cut at the local hairdressers will be a punishable offense. As much as I love David Bowie’s music, he’s to blame for this scourge of bad hair. Damn you Ziggy Stardust! How did you find the bubble? What makes you stick around? Fellow Aussie comic artist and previous Shirthead, Simon Sherry brought RedBubble to my attention via the Pulp Faction forums. Ever since then my paid work output has dropped considerably. Thanks again, mate! / I had a little break from the Bubble recently as I sometimes go through shifts in creative direction (meaning I have a short attention span) but dammit, t-shirt design is the coolest fun. I just couldn’t stay away! What will happen in the next five years? Most likely I’ll be frantically trying to justify my existence, both personally and creatively, since at the end of those five years I’ll be turning 40! Eep. Thanks Chris! Now get that worried look off your face… ;oP And I hate to be a broken record folks, but this is the last time I’ll mention it, I swear… Seeing as how it’s the final week and all… but Celadore is still struggling to keep the top spot over at Zudacomics.com so if you haven’t voted, there’s one week left to get me sailing over the finish line and finally be a legitimately paid comic artist. :oD Joy! The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. This is the story of our Grandmothers, and Great-grandmothers, as they lived only 90 years ago. It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women who made it so were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the that night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs, and their warden’s blessing, went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of ‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’ They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women. Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food – all of it colorless slop – was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because – why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining? Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO ’s new movie Iron Jawed Angels. It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder. All these years later, voter registration is still my passion, a carryover from the Civil Rights Movement, I suppose, because most of the voters who are targeted for my campaigns are black. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. / Sometimes it was inconvenient. My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was – with herself. One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie, she said. What would those women think of the way I use – or don’t use – my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who / did seek to learn. The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her all over again. HBO released the movie on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity. Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote Democratic, Republican or independent party – remember to vote. History is being made.

Everyone I just wanted you to know that the people behind / redbubble rock! I recently have experienced not just one but two lost shipments; I know this is just about unheard of….it was during the Christmas rush….I never received my second medium sized laminated print of my Orange Rose Heaven….I hope whoever received it is enjoying it…...to make a long story short: Redbubble stood behind me and reprinted and reshipped the order to arrive just intime for Christmas. My second loss was for myself: 20 of my cards to use as part of a display to promote my work….was shipped on Dec 21st…...never showed up and finally last night Redbubble has notified me that they will reprint and reship to me. I am delighted with the level of service that I have received from Redbubble (even with the two mishaps). I was beginning to get worried that my honesty and integrity were at stake here, but in the end, Redbubble came through and I am delighted! Thanks Redbubble.com!!!

  • rum, rocking and gum trees (and other things i've forgotten)

I’m sitting in my rocking chair, underneath the pergola. I’m smoking a rolled rum tobacco cigarette. It’s been over 3 years since I’ve smoked. I pretend that’s it’s not as serious because I’m not smoking normal cigarettes in a packet. The rolled ones seem less toxic. It’s lunacy I know. There are two pigeons fighting. I don’t think they’re playing, perhaps they are. It’s difficult to tell but their wings flap and make strange sounds which remind me of cardboard being stood on. They’ve been at it on and off for hours today and I hope they resolve their issue (s) soon because the noise is unsettling. There is a large gum tree next door, It hangs over my fence and I wish the whole tree was on my side of the fence. I would tie a swing to it made of rope and a plank of wood and I’d swing and close my eyes whilst my feet point upward. I’d pretend I was nine years old again. I’d twist around and in a circle until the rope is all twisted together and i’d let it spin and let everything get all wound and unwound. My hands are shaking because my thyroid medication was changed 2 days ago. I feel an anxiety in my chest and it makes me feel like another rolled cigarette. Perhaps the heaviness is a consequence from the smoking, perhaps it eases it. Either way, I have that familiar smell on my hands again which reminds me of my weakness. That tobacco smell that I would rather not have. But fuck the cigs are tasting good again. I look forward to any time between 4pm and 5pm when I can pour myself a glass of wine and consider it acceptable. I will definitely roll a cigarette then too. If I am strong, I won’t have one between here and then. Social smoking I think they call it. Whoever they are. It’s windy outside today and the washing machine beeps at me to empty a large load of towels and bath mats. 9 kg of cotton. Egyptian cotton and made in china cotton. Instead, I sit and write about things that dance above my head and over fences next door. Things that need to be written down before they run away and are forgotten, like the bed words that always appear at night as I’m drifting off to sleep. I’ll remember that in the morning. I never do. Things need to be written down. I grab my writing pad and scrawl GIVE UP SMOKING. AGAIN.

Our six calendars arrived today at work, and by golly are they good quality, having had a sample sent to me earlier, I had some idea of what to expect, but seeing you own shots in glorious colour, fantastic. We showed them off to all at work, and got plenty of interest (5 of the 6 are different designs). Anyway, I wasn’t fast enough at home, and four had already been wrapped for Xmas, so here are a few shots I thought I’d share, I’m so impressed and thrilled by the quality, as always RB has exceed my expectations.

Who would be interested in a group…not to promote specific artwork, but rather to promote RedBubble to consumers, a group to generate ideas and work towards enterprising our presence and activities here to greater benefit the community at large and our own work within it. Also, I started a group on the net called ikartists, but, since discovering the Bubble, I’m thinking that my net time would be better spent here, working in this very friendly and functional venue with you, all of us working toward one goal, which is to get consumers over here and looking at and buying our artwork…the artwork of their choice. Ideas? I’ve got more than several supporting websites that are top-ranked on the major search engines for art and art related subjects, and they can be used to facilitate redbubble ranking and artists. They aren’t being used effectively right now, though they do hold top ranking, and I’m game to help anyone who is game to help themselves without requiring someone to hand hold them. Sound tough? Well, I’m actually a teddy bear. But I’m also unwilling to do all the work myself…which is what usually happens. This would be a collaborative community project with members participating at will to their own and each other’s benefit, and to the RedBubble community itself…unless there already IS such a community group here…and if so, my mistake. I missed it yesterday when I thought I went through all the groups. Just pondering. If anyone is intersted, or anyone wants to roll with this themselves instead of me in the drivers seat, that would be GREAT. I’ve got a very full plate as it is.

Hello / I’ve often tried to do something a bit different on Red Bubble; these includes projects of a larger type and sometimes a bit ambitious. / Things like Epic, the really long stories like I was in a band once and HST and my holidays. / Then there was the themed projects like Bravery of being out of range and WWW. Oh and we can’t forget the little thing that was the ARSE group. / This one I’m flogging here was probably the most ambitious and when I think about it, a bit to over the top for Red Bubble with links all over the Web with videos, animations and music, but it was worth a try. / It also gave me a chance to incorporate a lot cool art by even cooler people into the story. / I’m talking about MONK ROCK, the tale of a Gregorian Punk Rock Band whose destiny has been pre-ordained by a red stone. It was originally done as a multiple part story under the profile Evilfroot and I am releasing it here as a 4 part collection to give it a wider audience. / This whole idea would not have been achievable if I hadn’t been inspired by the wonderful Ronnie Purcell and her work with the Writers Market. / Ronnie opened up my eyes to the potential of what you can do with groups and stories when she started up Blogs, widgets, YouTube, podcasts and Wikki entries. / This was an epiphany to the potential of story telling. As anyone who reads my stuff will know , I either like to make my stories short with a twist or fill them with pictures to keep the reader interested. / I hope you enjoy this , I am a huge fan of the Gorillaz band ( I’ve always had this thing for cartoon rock stars their marketing concept so that is where the basis of this story originated from and I left enough gaps in the story to fill in later with other short stories, gags or cartoons. / The bottom line is that this was a hell of a lot of fun to create and think there should be more of it on this site. / IT STARTS HERE

The thing is, I keep getting conflicting advice from people such as… / 1) The rock looks stunning all the time in all sorts of light / 2) The rock only lights up and looks fantastic for about 10 minutes at sunrise and sunset / 3) Don’t take you best camera because it is doomed due to all the dust and grit in the air / 4) Take your best camera because you will regret it if you don’t / 5) Do a tour to find the best spots (photographically speaking) / 6) Take yourself to the rock to find the best spots (photographically speaking) / 7) Find a local to show you the best spots (photographically speaking) So who can lend me some realistic advice on how to structure my time there to best suit my photographic endevours?
