Rockhopper This species of penguin occurs in subantarctic waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as around the southern coasts of South America. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin is classified as Vulnerable species by the IUCN. Its population has declined by about one-third in the last thirty years. Their common name refers to the fact that unlike many other penguins which negotiate obstacles by sliding on their bellies or by awkward climbing using their flipper-like wings as aid, Rockhoppers will try to jump over boulders and across cracks.

This is an Eastern collared lizard, and this particular specimen belongs to a subspecies of the broader genus that inhabits the few remaining glade habitats in southern Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. I personally really like this image because the colorful, lichen covered rocks are just as beautiful as the lizard, and the two together make for a special treat! / /

I am sure this image will not appeal to everyone but for me it illustrates of nature in balance and the Circle of Life. A coho salmon lies in the shallows of a small pond near Mendenhall Lake near death trapped by receding water after spawning. It will provide food for the bears of eagles now that its eggs have been deposited.
