  • After shooting the early light of the morning down at Cape Schanck I thought I’d take a quick shot of the sun light reflecting off the large boulders in this little cove. I love the warm colours and shapes of wet boulders in the sun. If you ever go down to this place when the tied is high and the weather a little on the wild side, the massive waves that come crashing in to this little space throw these boulders around making an awesome rumbling sound. A must see if you live close enough to the Mornington Peninsula.

I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / SOME OF MY FAVS / click on the image to link to that image / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Southern Gannets in close to the rocks feeding on cuttlefish and squid. The image is a composite all shot within 30 minutes. It is an initial long exposure with a wide angle lens. The birds were then shot at the same location in the same session with a telephoto lens and “dropped in” during post processing.

  • Series: New Zealand White Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand Test your senses; bright yellows, pungeant smells that make your nose crinkle in disgust and force you to reach for your gas mask. Constant hissing and burping. Softly floating ash. Loud rumblings from the bowels of the earth. It’s pretty scary stuff! The only live marine volcano and the largest volcanic structure in NZ…...White Island is 70% undersea! She floats 48 kms out, in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. About 150,000 years old and built by continuous volcanic activity. Today, this old girl’s activity is constantly monitored by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (IGNS). When we visited the IGNS helicopter flew in and landed. The doors flung out and people in strange suits exploded from within. They ran to their places on top of the crater and started to work, concentrating hard on their tasks. We watched, intently, for about an hour. Their concentration was so intence, I doubt they even knew we were there. They performed with precision – it’s the closest I’ll ever come to a moon landing! The island is currently on a level 1 alert; she’s always active and constantly spewing forth steam, sulphur and lots of other volcanic “stuff”. At her heart, she has a deep, steaming lake. She takes pride of place at the tip of NZs “chain of fire”; a 250 km long chain of highly active volcano’s extending from her (White Island), to Ruapehu in the centre of the north Island. A walk on her shores is indeed a walk on the wild side.

  • Fire and water don’t usually mix, but in this case they seem to flow wonderfully together. Caney Fork River at the Rock Island State Park, Tennessee. (P.S. This is not a sunset photo. The color in the reflection is from the autumn leaves. It’s a little blurry because the water was moving).

  • Rockhopper This species of penguin occurs in subantarctic waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as around the southern coasts of South America. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin is classified as Vulnerable species by the IUCN. Its population has declined by about one-third in the last thirty years. Their common name refers to the fact that unlike many other penguins which negotiate obstacles by sliding on their bellies or by awkward climbing using their flipper-like wings as aid, Rockhoppers will try to jump over boulders and across cracks.

  • All photos of the penguins in this calendar were taken in the wild A slideshow of my penguin photos can be seen here
