  • Taken at the 4000ft level of Mt Washington, part of the presidential range of the the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire USA on Saturday May 17th 2008. It was a beautiful day, but much colder at this level. The top additional 4000ft was closed to tourists due to weather conditions: ice and snow, but will open later in the season. All I could think of was John Denver’s song: Rocky Mountain High becaue that is exactly how I felt, exhilirated to be there. It is not the Rockies but the highest elevation I have been so far! Top ten placement in the Your Magic Place challenge, New Hampshire group November 2009

  • Laurel Branch and the 80-foot high Laurel Falls are named for mountain laurel, an evergreen shrub which blooms along the trail and near the falls in May. The trail is 2.6 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty. Every year over 200,000 visitors hike well-worn trails to view Grotto, Laurel, Abrams, Rainbow, and other popular waterfalls in the park. Large waterfalls attract the crowds, but smaller cascades and falls can be found on nearly every river and stream in the park. The Great Smoky Mountains abound with the two ingredients essential for waterfalls—ample rainfall and an elevation gradient. In the Smokies high country, over 85” of rain falls on average each year. During wet years, peaks like Mt. Le Conte and Clingmans Dome receive over eight feet of rain. This abundant rainfall trickles and rushes down the mountain sides, from high elevation to low, sometimes dropping more than a mile in elevation from the high peaks to the foothills at the park’s boundary. • “Up she goes” was featured in Alphabet Soup (Letter U) Photo taken in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada, with my Canon PowerShot S5 IS camera.

  • Seal Rock, Oregon is named for the rock formations that guard this particular section of the Oregon Coast. Its original Chinook name,” Seal Illahe,” means “seal home” and offers an apt description of the area’s most endearing landmark. Dozens of seals and sea lions inhabit the rocks at Seal Rock State Recreation Site, providing excellent wildlife photography opportunities. Uncluttered beaches and intriguing tide pools make the Seal Rock area a relaxing location for summer strolls. Photo taken by Canon IXUS

  • A dead burnt out tree hangs forlornly over the rim of the South Grand Canyon Arizona USA holding a silent vidgle. Photo taken by Canon IXUS

  • Spider Rock stands with awesome dignity and beauty over 800 feet high in Arizona’s colorful Canyon de Chelly National Park (pronounced da Shay). Geologists of the National Park Service say that “the formation began 230 million years ago. It stands windblown sand swirled and compressed with time created the spectacular red sandstone monolith. Long ago, the Dine (Navajo) Indian tribe named it Spider Rock. Stratified, multicolored cliff walls surround the canyon. For many, many centuries the Dine (Navajo) built caves and lived in these cliffs. Most of the caves were located high above the canyon floor, protecting them from enemies and flash floods. / This painting was created in my Grants Pass, Oregon Studio / Featured in / Spirit of the Native American / First People of America

  • Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. Featured in “Utah Landscapes” – July 2009. A reflection in the pool of water at the base of Neon Canyon’s Golden Cathedral. This angle shows only a small part of the sandstone wall surrounding this large alcove in the Utah desert. The green areas are plant matter growing on the vertical rock wall. Changes to original photo include: moderately increased red and green, greatly reduced blue, slightly increased saturation and reduced brightness. Normally this is a reddish brown sandstone which can appear “golden” but probably not in quite this shade! • Down in Grand Canyon but still far away from the bottom. You can most likely spot the small houses and also (for those with eagle eyes) two people are walking near white road bend. I know I have seen them with my binoculars ;)). That gives an good idea about size of Grand Canyon.. Captured with Nikon D70
