Arches National Park in Southeast Utah preserves over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, like the this sculpture appropriately named Balanced Rock. This picture was taken in May of 1994 with a Minolta Dynax-aka Maxxum-7000i film camera on 35 mm Fuji slide film. This is a high quality scan and uploaded in a resolution of 7200×4800 pixels at 300 dpi and will yield a brilliant print up to poster size.

Just north of Long Point, and 13 miles of Long Beach, Point Vicente Lighthouse stands only second to Palos Verdes as the westernmost point in Los Angeles. Before the installation of the Point Vincente Light on May 1,1926, many ships and seamen went to their graves on this disastrous, rocky stretch of California’s Pacific coast. During World War Two the Coast Artillery men didn’t want the light to be too good of an aid to enemy navigation. so the 1000 watt light was replaced by a tiny 25 watt bulb, and black out curtains hung ready for use in all the windows. / After the war, when the light was returned to its normal power, the endlessly rotating beam became a glaring disturbance to local residents and a hazard to motorists on Palos Verdes Drive. Keepers coated the inside of the inland facing windows with a coat of opaque, pearly white paint to end the flash of the beacon on peninsula bedroom walls. That is when the “Lady Of The Light” appeared. In the dim light through the painted windows, some saw the shape of a tall serene woman in a flowing gown who would slowly pace the tower’s walkway. In 1955, a thicker coat of paint ended the spirit’s nightly romp around the tower, and the ghost has not been seen officially since. Today Point Vicence Lightstation still sends out it’s beacon across the Catalina Channel. It is one of the biggest and brightest lights along the California coast. Laminated Print /

I had a blast, really. Shot lots of people. Learned lots in the process. Got a good workout. And then a couple more. This is Amy. The stats: / - 6 hours / - 24 people / - 2 dogs / - 1 real photographer (Amy) / - 1 pretend photographer (that would be me) / - 1 with pneumonia (not me) / - 1 desert / - 45 degrees F / - 0 bathrooms / - 1 sunset / - 100s of pounds of equipment / - 2 sleds (to pull previously mentioned equipment) / - .4 miles walking through sand, each way / - 6 round trips / - did I mention sand? I could go on, I think. It really was a great day.

While Sedona is stunning in colour and majesty, the eroded rock formations make for imposing landscapes in black and white. Shapes, tone and texture can become more important. Colour can be a distraction sometimes.
