  • On the road south, this woman loomed larger than life ahead of us, beaming away for several kms. It felt like she was our travelling companion for a short time, and we couldn’t help smiling back! • ink on watercolor paper. roughly based on the landscape one may find driving between Phoenix and Los Angeles… a trip i have taken countless times.

  • Lost in Utah would have been a more apt title after the GPS affectionately known as “Dorothy” lead me to a graveyard instead of a lake lol. I discovered some gorgeous countryside along route. There is nothing better than getting lost :))

  • click feature buttons to view group/challenge / — / Koalas are at home at Cape Otway and as you drive in to, and out of, the lighthouse grounds there are many koalas in trees…and on the road! I snapped this mother carrying her baby after we nearly ran over them when we pulled over so I could get out and take shots of koalas in trees! I hadn’t seen koalas in the wild since I was a kid, so I was so excited…that I forgot to pay attention to framing or depth of field or anything technical (hence the massive crop…). The koalas along this stretch of road must be used to stopping traffic because after this shot was taken, she crossed the road, stopped in the middle of the road, posed (yes, posed, like in this picture!) for a few photos before running into the scrub. So, this was part of our road trip from Melbourne to Darwin via the Great Ocean Road and the red centre. This was about the seventh day I had my new DSLR (Nikon D90 – Tamron 17-50mm 2.8). UPDATED PIC: have adjusted the levels for sharper image. — / Other images taken in the Cape Otway Grounds / Click images to view / - / N.B. • Saint Mary’s Lake is in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. I believe I was rather lucky to get such a calm day as I witnessed here, since I was told that for quite some weeks they had been experiencing unusually bad weather for the time of year ! Glacier is an amazing place, with its primeval mountain shapes, and abundant wildlife, lakes and waterfalls, and many good trails. I was hearing the Elk bugling across the lake as I shot. I would recommend this magic place to anyone ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, polarising filter, f22, 1/30 sec, iso 100, auto WB, Raw file, processed in Adobe CS3, selective levels/curves and selective colour adjustments. I sharpened with Intellisharpen 2. FEATURED IN / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/dslr-users-only-3-a-day / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/streams-brooks-creeks SEE MORE OF MY “USA” SET HERE …

  • The much photographed road shot, taken at sunrise. / All I had to do was get up early and wait for “it” to happen. / The early bird catches the worm ! Scanned from a Fuji Velvia transparency, image shot on my Ricoh KR10 super, mounted on a tripod and polariser fitted, f22, iso 50, don’t know the shutter speed ! / Scanned with my Nikon Coolscan VED into Adobe PS CS3, with a little dust and noise removal. • The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, USA. I got up early for this one, I had travelled thousands of miles to see it, had only one morning to get my shot in the bag – and what did I find ? / A film crew shooting an advert ! Along with a battalion of other photographers, I was champing at the ‘bit’, since we weren’t allowed to shoot in case we captured the models – male and female – the whole darned thing was so artificial !! So, when there was a lull in shooting, I crept under a bush and hastily ‘snapped’ my shot. Maybe I should pursue a career in the ‘Paparazzi ??!!! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D with polarising filter attached, mounted very hastily on my tripod, Canon efs 18-55mm lens set at 45mm, underexposed by half a stop, f 27, 1/20 sec, auto wb, iso 100, RAW file developed as much as possible in Adobe Camera Raw, then in PS CS3, selective Levels/Curves, saturation of colours achieved with LAB colour, then the tiniest amount of Orton applied, to ‘pop’ the textures of the wood and grass. • Tree Skeletons shot at Dawn, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, reflected in a pool. I shot this before the sun broke through the mist, as I liked the blueness emphasising the coldness – there was a few degrees of frost that morning. / The image I processed from a RAW file, I felt was a little plain, so I gave it a touch of Orton, which drew out the dead tree silhouettes. Still not happy, I added a texture, to enhance the fog, not too much, since I didn’t want to spoil the ‘soft’ feel of the image. / I can recall the quietness of the early morning as I stood in awe of Mother Nature’s magic ! Shot on my Canon Eos 40D, mounted on tripod, f23, 1/60 sec, / no exposure compensation, the meter read the scene correctly, auto wb, RAW file processed in Adobe RAW, then in CS3, Orton applied with reduced opacities, and a texture, downloaded for free off the internet someplace, applied with discretion, by again reducing opacities etc. SEE MORE OF MY USA SET ….

  • Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Where else would you want to be on a morning like this ? The Elk were bugling across the Lake, it was warm, the air was very still, reflections all around me, gorgeous mountains everywhere…......... / felt like I was in heaven !! / All I had to do was get down a very steep bank on the lakeside – then get back up, Help !! / Magic ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, polarising filter attached, f22, 1/15 sec, iso 100, auto wb, shot at 50mm on my 18-55mm lens, RAW file processed in Adobe Camera RAW, then CS3 with tweaks in levels/curves and selective colour. • Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP, Utah, USA. Utah has an amazing landscape, there is so much to see, very photogenic with all that red rock, especially viewed against a very blue sky ! (I like it best when there are a few clouds as well though !) This Arch is reached along a rocky trail, and is very impressive, as it perfectly frames the view beyond. / We did quite a few of the trails in Canyonlands and Arches, and found the very dry going underfoot an absolute dream, since we are more used to having to play ‘dodge the bog’ here in super-wet Scotland ! Shot on Fuji Velvia, around seven years ago. I scanned it on to my PC with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and tidied up a bit of ‘dust’ in Photoshop. I also beefed up the red colour for more impact. • Another image from Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming, on our holiday from last Autumn. (2008) / West Thumb Geyser basin is on the shores of Yellowstone Lake, and is a kaleidoscope of colours, like Mother Nature went crazy with Photoshop !! Boardwalks go in various directions, and it is a hard choice, which way shall I go ??!! I chose to ‘follow the light’ / and Mother Nature gave me a helping hand with a sky straight from my dreams ! / I hope you enjoy this one ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, polarising filter, f11, 1/60sec, auto wb, RAW file processed in CS3, levels/curves/selective colour etc. FEATURED IN…....... / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/focus-and-lighting / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/streams-brooks-creeks SEE MORE OF MY USA SET HERE… >

  • Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments. • The ground was bone dry, and the Bison ( or Buffalo if you wish !) were rather skitterish, kicking up a whole lot of dust, so I took advantage of the moment to produce a more interesting image. The colour shot looked too plain, so in Adobe Photoshop CS3 I converted to b/w, applied a little Orton, dodged and burned here and there, and my final touch was to add some ‘noise’ to enhance the dust, which also looks like mist ! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, f9.5, 1/350 sec, ( I needed a fast shutter speed and a fairly shallow depth of field ) iso 200, 28-300mm Tamron lens set at 109mm, hand held, RAW file converted in Adobe Camera Raw / CS3 as above.
