I took this on a road trip through Colorado. The little bloke the middle is my nephew Jack. I love this shot and yet everything in it is so inconsequential. Perhaps that’s its secret for me. It demonstrates the typical props of American life. The consumer goods, the ATM, the ‘wild west test your strength game’ Jack is playing with, the hint of USA embroidery on the shirt worn by the man on the left and the wonderful stance and gaze of the harley rider over Jack’s left shoulder. So random yet so complete.

Out on old Route 66, between Victorville and Barstow, is a little town called Oro Grande. Just outside the town’s little store I saw the man in pensive concetration.
I wanted to identify all the elements of red in a streetscene – turns out there’s not many! An interesting effect though.

Out with my son today and we stood watching [and shooting] at this little crossing in Higashi-ikebukuro for a while. This was my best shot there but I must go back. A lovely little place for ‘moments’. Nikon D300 / 85mm f/1.4 AF D

Joel Parkinson appeared almost weightless as he stacked up the points in the 2009 Rip Curl Pro final against local (well,... Portland) hope, Adam Robertson in pumping six-foot (2 metre) conditions at Bells Beach. Today’s victory marks the second time Parkinson has hoisted the bell (the first being in 2004), and the reputation and acclaim associated with the iconic event is something about which every surfer dreams. Robertson’s effort at the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach will go down in history, as the young natural-footer’s runner-up finish is the highest ever by a Victorian at the prestigious competition.
