Who here can claim that driving is power? / Probably all you who call this rush hour.
I wrote this poem in August of 2003 and it has gone through many tweaks since then. It has never been published and I am a little wary of putting on RB because of the First Rights issue. However, I wanted to join the Boredom Competitions on the 24/7 group’s latest competition What Moves You. I may decide to take this down after the competition or not, depending upon the response it receives. I chose this piece because, while a car and driving do “move” a person – traffic does not. So, while this poem may appear to reflect something that does not move me, it is actually depicting something that IS moving me…just at a slower pace, which is aggravating. I also think it works on two levels and has a metaphorical connection to being “moved” as well. Sometimes, what moves me not to get into the car and go is the thought of traffic and “rush hour”. I think it is also what moves many people to exhibit signs of road rage. I hope you enjoy! As always, feedback is sought and appreciated! The road less traveled can sometimes seem a lonely road…
When I saw Sandy’s picture, even though she was captured by the blue sky and the white clouds, I was taken by the road itself and the fact that there was one dead standing tree on the left side. And the first thing that came to mind was, “the road less traveled” and the rest of the poem followed quickly after! Thanks for the inspiration Sandy!!!
