A recent news program highlighted the problems in Far Nth Queensland’s peninsula area with the government letting big companies have access to precious river systems as they forbid small Aboriginal societies and their agricultural developments from accessing the water. These rivers have been used and maintained by these indigenous populations for thousands of years with little or no effect on the environment. Every river system that is manhandled is contaminated by not only pollutants but the run off that affects the fish life which then leads to the loss of native fish replaced by species such as the nuisance telapia, great in a fish tank, awful in our river systems. I am outraged that the Queensland Government is allowing the mining companies to pollute these rivers and at the same time stop the people who live there using them. Then they will all turn around in 1o years and wonder why our rivers have stopped flowing and Far Nth Queensland will become more of an ecological wreck than it already is thanks to more “beaurocratic bungling”.
