  • Walking to a view point of Fox Glacier, in New Zealand, we crossed this beautiful waterfall. It is times like these, that you don’t wish to be anywhere else. Further down, we had to cross this over slippery rocks and rushing water. It is a wonder I didn’t fall in. Fox Glacier is part of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (established 1960) which extends from the highest peaks of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana/Southern Alps to the remote beaches of the wild West Coast. It is an area of magnificent primeval vistas; snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, tussock grasslands, coast, lakes, rivers and wetlands. This world-class scenic landscape has been recognised as such with World Heritage status. This was taken with a Canon DSLR EOS 350D camera and timelapse/long exposure of 1 second, handheld (leaning on a railing).

  • What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

  • A birthday shot for me, 49 to day, nasty weather all weekend, just managed to get down the river for half an hour, rain had stopped and the sky broke up enough to let the light through, shot lots of different angle of this trapped branch, this one is the best, the 17 mm lens allows you to get so close. Shot at the Hutt River just below Moonshine Bridge near Trentham Park, New Zealand. Sun still lighting up the valley, lovely soft light, 5mins after this and the light had gone.. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND8 grad filter. Same location over the last couple of weeks. / More rain to come! / Hutt River Slipway / Sunday pink

  • One of twelve limited Edition Canvas exclusive to Mary Archibalds Gallery, Contact Mary and the girls on 04 939 2112 archibaldsart@xtra.co.nz 95 Main Street Upper Hutt Shot along the Hutt River near Trentham Park in a small side stream after a hail storm, I’d taken the dog out and we had to shelter under a tree while the storm passed, once it cleared the light was magic, at the bottom of the valley the sun was trying to burst through (never did) which gave this Autumn peach tone. the peach tone lasted for about 3 mins and then it was gone followed by another down pore, I love the way the mist over Moonshine and Riverstone merges with the sky, I needed a very low angle to get the light reflected into the water, I’m om my knees in the water for this shot and it was bloody cold. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens and a cokin ND8 grad All Twelve canvases: / River Run Dawn Dawn Candy / Candy shop dawn / River Run Dawn Blues / Tuning Fork Falls / Broken Autumn Hues / SunShine over MoonShine / Sunshine over Moonshine Rocks / Stags Head Rock / River Run Dusk Hues / Candy Shop Tripple Ripple / The Dawn Star / Dawn Torment

  • This is the one for me, this one has all the drama, love the sky breaking up to the left, this wasn’t were I was going this morning, the end of the valley had low lying cloud, that clour acted as a barrier, stopping the sun coming through and throwing this fantastic pink light down the valley. This location is 5 mins from home, behind me is SH2, and streaming cars heading to work in Wellington, we have had bad weather lately which is giving some great skys. Shot in the Hutt River, looking into Trentham Park, this is about 7.45am, sun rising to my left. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND8 grad filter. Other images I shot this morning / Perfect Cotton Floss / Candy Floss Hutt Dawn / Vertical Candy Floss Dawn / Towards Silverstream

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper Hutt, New Zealand. We have had some great last light in the valley, the change starts about 4.30pm and its gone in less than half an hour, stunning soft pinks and peaches. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag. check out the image below, this is about 10 mins latter, the sky is loosing its pink giving way to lovely wedgewood blues, this is a closer angle to the log in the foreground which reveals a trapped plastic wrap. / Its a wrap!

  • Sot at the Hutt River near Trentham park, a small side stream running very slow, cold as Ice, after I’d finished this morning the water had frozen onto the tripod, as i closed the legs a sleeve of ice was shed, I couldn’t get too close to the camera, i had to hold my breath while changing settings for fear of fogging the back. The shot below was taken about half an hour latter, I’d started in a blue/purple spectrum, this wane is moving into the orange/ yellow spectrum, at this point the light behind me was pink. shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens, cokin ND8 grad. / Peach Frost / not sure which one I like the best, this is the same branch in / Broken Autumn Hues

  • Sot at the Hutt River near Trentham park, a small side stream intersects with the main river, more force thatn you think going across these stones, this is the oposite angle to Peach Mist / Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens, cokin ND8 grad.

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Moonshine Bridge, Upper Hutt, New Zealand, view towards Moonshine Bridge. I’ve been working with this trapped timber for a few weeks now and still have not got the shot that I want, this is becoming a challenge, what I want is to get this image at sunrise, the sun comes up at the end of the tree line, it could be magical, I will keep at it. All made possible by my fishing waders and sandbags, what you cant tell, coz my 17mm lens is so wide angle that the lens is about 30cm from that branch, I’m knee deep in the water and the water drops off to about 4 feet to the right of the branch, an extreme approach but thats the difference, no one else can get this shot, no one else is daft enough. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND8 grad, tripod and sand bag.

  • Taranaki Falls, Mt Ruapehu, North Island New Zealand. / Tongariro National Park. Tumbling 20 metres over the edge of a large lava flow, which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago, Taranaki Falls plunge into a boulder-ringed pool, on this night a ring of ice. Nikon D200, iso 400 / 30 second exposeure, with a bit of torch light on the cliff. / Cold night, Full moon, well worth the 1 hour walk.

  • Mt Taranaki, North Island, New Zealand. Sunrise. / East face of mountain. / Nothing like sitting in a river valley of rocks waiting for the sun to rise. Sun is just hitting the top, The sky is pink along with the water. Very rewarding morning. / Nikon D200

  • just on a whim, I got up at 5am and shot down the river, this spot is 5mins from home, my wife said the weather was going to be crap, not worth going out, you’re wasting your time, Brilliant! when people tell you its gonna be bad the chances are that its gonna be SENSATIONAL!!! you be the judge, I’m very happy with this image. Shot in the Hutt River near Silverstream, view towards upper Hutt and Moonshine Bridge. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND4 grad, tripod and sand bags. Active D-Lighting on high, ISO 100

  • Shot in the Hutt River near Silverstream, view towards upper Hutt and Moonshine Bridge. The start of a limited edition canvas series for the Hutt River, New Zealand Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor Lens, Cokin ND4 grad, tripod and sand bags. Active D-Lighting on high, ISO 100 Check out how fast the light went off the boil, this one is mins after the one below which has wild colours, i think I like the more subdued and rock detail better.
