Waking up early isn’t my forté, but this magical sunrise pulled me out of bed and down to the river. The morning mists were rolling down and the water was dead calm, as if not wanting to disturb the day. The photo is cross-processed medium format velvia and retains some imperfections.

In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Watercolour / 300gsm Saunders, rough. I find that Saunders is a high quality paper often overlooked in favour of Arches and while Saunders does move a little more when soaked with watercolour pigment, i love the roughness of the edges when it’s completed. You can never completely flatten it even with lots of pressure from all the piled up heavy books. Original sold, 2009

This is another magical area of North Wales ….. Coed y Brenin ….. I have used Painter X to render the image, it has the fullest range of ’ natural ’ brushes and if used with a graphics tablet the transition from orthodox to digital painting is painless, with the added bonus, you can ’ fiddle ’ with the end painting with the knowledge that if you go too far, you can remove it. / As a former traditional artist, I thoroughly recommend ’ Corel Painter ‘ / Final ’ tweaks ’ were made in Photoshop …... Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments.
