For some reason, Kim Jong Il’s Song “I’m So Ronery” popped into my head after finishing this image – you can check out the song here Say what you want about the guy, but he’s a pretty darn good singer…

This was taken on the Owens River with the Sierras in the background. On the far left is the Mammoth Crest, to its right is Mammoth Mountain and it is actually a dormant volcano and a popular ski resort. To the right of that you can see the jagged Minarets and to the far right is Mount Ritter. The hills in the background are the resurgent dome. They are constantly being pushed upwards due to a pocket of magma filling up a few miles below the surface. The Owens River is the main source of water for Los Angeles via the L.A. Aquaduct. Los Angeles stole most of the water that used to feed this valley. This was exhibited at the 2008 Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, Ca.

A detail from the Romanesque church Peter-and-Paul (Saint-Pierre-et-Paul) in Rosheim (Alsace, France). This sculpture (which goes on around the corner) depicts a knight saving his compatriot from a dragon. In full view you can see the sword stabbing into the dragon’s maw. The church has been constructed in the 12th century (start of construction 1150) with the addition of a tower in the 14th century. The church’s organ was built in 1733 by Andreas Silbermann, an important organ builder of the Baroque period in the region.

The dust-covered commander of Afrika-Korps, German General der Panzertruppe Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma, salutes British General Bernard Law Montgomery after being captured during the final day of fighting at El-Alamein (November 1942). Cordial but professional, Monty invited the General to dinner, verbally recaught the battle with him and made the tape of the conversation!

The Minarets are the jagged peaks in the mountain range near the center. There are 17 of them and the tallest is Clyde Minaret at 12,281 ft. They are part of the Ritter Range which is the oldest range of mountains in the Sierra Nevadas. They were formed by millions of years of glacial carving, winds, ice, and earthquakes.
