Riomaggiore (Rimasùu in the local language) is a village and a commune in the province of La Spezia, situated in a small valley in the Liguria region of Italy. It is the first of the Cinque Terre one meets coming from La Spezia. The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town’s vineyards. Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses. Riomaggiore has one or two roads where people socialise, but most of the life at night can be found at the Bar Centrale. Besides Bar Centrale, finding English-speakers in this small town can be hard. There are a few spots where you’ll find service in English—Il Corsaro Rosso Kayak and Snorkeling Rentals right in the harbour has a Canadian staff member who speaks English and can give visitors any information of the area they need. The Via dell’Amore is a path connecting Riomaggiore to its frazione Manarola, also part of the Cinque Terre. Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre, all connected by trail. The water and mountainside have been declared national parks.

“Painting Riomaggiore” is from my “Cinque Terre” Collection 2008 This photo took almost 30 minutes to frame. It was a real mission to wait for all of the tourists to get out of shot. And then the artists would turn and watch me. Eventually it worked, and I think it was worth it.

Riomaggiore (Italy) / It is quite sure that the origins of Riomaggiore date back to the 8th Century, when the inhabitants of the Vara valley, searching a milder climate to raise grapevines and olive-trees without the fear of pirate raids, moved towards the coast. The town climbs up along the ridges overlooking the sea and it is characterized from the typical stone houses with coloured façades and slate-roofs. The town of Riomaggiore presents typical features reflecting its history and traditions. The town stretches along a vertical axe where steep staircases are the only means to move around the town. The typical houses have one or two-floor towers in order to use at best the place at disposal. / The first historical traces date back to 1239, when the inhabitants of the feudal district of Carpena entered in the Compagnia Genovese. Only in 1343 Riomaggiore became independent as municipality and administration, and during Napoleon’s age it absorbed also the town of Manarola, whose historical roots are even older than Riomaggiore itself. Riomaggiore is located at the interior of the Natural Park of Cinque Terre (founded by a Decree of the President of the Republic in 1999), and it is a Protected Marine Area housing several very rare animal and vegetal species. The sea of Cinque Terre is characterized by the presence of wonderful animals like dolphins and whales; in fact it is part of the Whales’ Sanctuary, a protected Marine Area. Shot in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre – Italy. / Cinque Terre (five countries) are five small villages situated in a mountainous and rocky area on the shores of Liguria. / The villages are connected by a pedestrian path, called via del amore (the path of love), passing between vineyards and olive groves on the hills. / Cars are not allowed into the villages. / We slept two nights in Riomaggiore. / We walked on the path from Riomaggiore till Vernazza and returned back to Riomaggiore with a ferry. / It was one of the highlights of our journey to north Italy. / The villages are fascinating, clourful houses hanging on the cliffs and on top of each other. The views of the sea, the cliffs and the vineyards build in terraces on the mountains above the villages are wonderful.
