So bringing my new toy home for the first time resulted in lots of random and fairly uninteresting shots. While the guys worried about F stops and technical stuff, I proceeded to poke stupid faces shouting “take one of me! take one of me!!!” This is my now encyclopedic knowledge of taking photos with a ring flash, for your enjoyment, and my embarrassment. / Plucking your eyebrows is a must with a ring flash. In fact, if you have any skin insecurities, probably best to stay on the other side of it. (The photographer side that is) You’ll also notice that it gives you a crazy circle light in your eyes, kind of like you are possessed. I thought that was ace. / Because the light goes in a big circle around the lens, you can pretty much cover the whole thing with hair, or possibly other things, and it still manages to light everything up. I thought that was ace too. / In fact, lack of shadows is probably my favourite thing about it. You can flash someone straight on, even if they are having a girly hissy fit backed up against a wall, and there are no severe shadows behind them. / And you can take photos through blinds, bars and fabric without casting shadows on your subject. John’s a good sport and let us trap him between the blinds and the door to test out this theory. I reckon John is a bit ace too. / This whole “no shadows” business means it’s also great for taking photos inside things, which is also ace. / even inside your nose / And James thought that was ace. Just see how happy he is!

An overnight low of 8 degrees celsius wasn’t going to stop me from bribing two models, a stylist and a second photographer freeze their tits off for the sake of art. Extra love goes to the models who braved the elements in skimpy dresses and sheer camisoles – I promise next time we will be indoors and with the heater on full! I got one! Basically it’s a small ring which mounts onto the camera body on one side, and on the other side has a reverse filter thread. / The upshot of this is you can turn your lens around (in this case my 50mm f/1.8) and attach it to the camera, and through some physics hocus pocus, you have a macro lens. It’s bloody cheap when compared to an actual macro lens. Downside? Well, no focus. You focus by moving closer or further away. Aperture is controlled by turning the aperture ring on the lens, can’t see a thing when stopped right down! My off camera flash control doesn’t work, would probably need a cable or remote triggers. My SB900 on the camera with the tupperware diffuser on seems to work okay though. There’s a bit of trial and error to get the exposures right, but it seems to work pretty well! / I did a couple test shots with it, just to try it out, it’ll work a whole lot better once I set up on a tripod! The lid of a coke bottle, clamped between my thighs. The blue is my jeans! The side of the glass coke bottle. Shooting wide open, the depth of field was insanely narrow. And to give a good sense of scale, a 35mm film canister.

I recently purchased the Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter, and i love it! The cost is just $200 US (available online at Samy’s and B&H). I have used the flash on one pro portrait shoot so far, and the results were excellent. I’ve also experimented with different settings and subjects outside. Also great results. ETTL works just fine. The unit is one solid piece, so it’s a bit awkward for packing in a camera bag, but I got mine to fit after some maneuvering. If you’ve wanted to buy a ring flash, I encourage you to give this one a try. it’s a great alternative to the more expensive models. Glennis
