2.14pm – Wednesday afternoon The keys on this plastic alphabet are sticky. The seat has no back and the minutes are expensive. The sub audible hum of ten thousand anxious people reverberate through the terminal floor. The timeless neon glow of Gates 31-40, Baggage Claim, Toilets and a Foodcourt burn into my pores. A voice informs me that Mr Nigel Sankey should really hurry along to Gate 36, because all the people already wedged onto the plane are getting seriously annoyed. In another life our original flight had not suffered the generic ‘engineering difficulties’ and we were already home, but in this life we were destined to spend half a day in Sydney airport at an internet cafe, so still in this life I wrench the keyboard from a neighbouring computer and walk resolutely towards the mannequins at the Virgin Service Desk, a blank look in my eye. / How did it come to this? 7.55am – Earlier that same day El Presidente and I burst into the breakfast room of the Shangri La hotel in Sydney, where NetGuide are holding the ceremony of their yearly internet awards. The room goes slightly quiet, the dog in the corner ceases playing the piano, and the 100% suited and booted occupants turn to look at these last minute arrivals, one in a vibrant red limited edition RedBubble tee, the other in a faux-Napoleonic military jacket. I wave my cane in the direction of some empty seats and we take our place between the MD of eBay and a man from the Bureau of Meteorology. A general air that we may be ‘chancers’ prevails. The ceremony begins, and decorum is held in fine corporate silence, broken by an intermittent golf clap as another nervous individual waddles up to claim their glass shard. The 14th prize is for Best New Site, and it is won by a company called Web Menu, but also has a Highly Commended Category, which RedBubble wins. None of the other categories really have second place awards, and so we still appear like we are here for the free breakfast. The final two awards, however, are a little more prestigious, and they begin with the ‘People’s Choice’ which NetGuide are very proud of, and after building it up to unprecendented heights they announce that RedBubble has conquered it without question. You can hear the room inhale in unison, then vigourously clap. Afterwards everyone was very friendly, coming over to congratulate and talk details, I was even accosted by one man in the gents but I requested he wait until I finish, I think he had something to do with the ceremony. We hand out some t-shirts and greetings cards and even some bubbles, which could be seen floating around the room towards the end of the event. 9.45am After a suitably cheesy photoshoot, we jump into a taxi and head for the airport and hopefully, a quick flight home. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I’d just like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole team, to thank all of you, and not just all of you who managed to read this whole post, or even all of you who voted for us, but ALL of you. Because you really do make this site as vibrant as it is, without you we’re nothing, well, not nothing, we’d be a bunch of nerds in a room with some flashy computers and an endless biscuit supply, but I don’t think there’s an award for that. / So thanks and don’t stop now, we’re just getting warmed up. onetonshadow, and everybody else Oh and big up to NetGuide for the whole event, bacon and free mousemats, here’s what they have to say about it Addendum / I’d also like to thank the mighty Anne van Alkemade for stumbling across the competition in the first place and alerting our eager community. May your days be filled with fine wines and tasty cakes.
Um…Yeah…its bit in ya face hey! oops! / . / . / . / . yes…this is an older one…sorry Jen! Just clearing the decks…or the HD anyways! ;) / eeep….....

Burlesque is a humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and sometimes grotesque exaggeration. Prior to Burlesque becoming associated with striptease, it was a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad, often risqué style very different from that for which it was originally known. The term burlesque may be traced to folk poetry and theatre and apparently derived from the late Latin burra (‘trifle’). Some authors assert that the first instance of burlesque occurred in the Commedia dell’arte of 16th century Italy. However, the first wide spread use of the word was as a literary term in 17th century Italy and France where it referred to a grotesque imitation of the dignified or pathetic. Beginning in the early 18th century the term burlesque was used throughout Europe as a title for musical works in which serious and comic elements were juxtaposed or combined to achieve a grotesque effect. In the 19th century and 20th century England the word became a term for a dramatic production which ridicules stage conventions. In 20th century America the word became associated with a variety show in which strip tease is the chief attraction. Although the striptease originated at the Moulin Rouge in 1890s Paris and subsequently became a part of some burlesque across Europe, only in American culture is the term burlesque closely associated with the striptease. I’m the newest fan of the watchmen. It’s amazing how some things go by unnoticed. Then one day you stumble across them and discover how freaking awesome they are. In celebration i made myself a shirt to wear with a quote from Rorschach. “Watchmen are over. What do you suggest we do about it?” / “Retribution.” If you are looking for a shirt to buy, i would recommend one made by someone who actually has talent such as this guy. Or a better version of the plain silhouette here. Watchmen 2009 movie trailer. Info about the movie on IMDB. Thanks for stopping by.

Take the mickey (or variations) are euphemistic ways of conveying this expression where the word “piss” may be vulgar. / The term sometimes refers to a form of mockery or a piss take in which the mocker exaggerates the other person’s characteristics; pretending to take on his or her attitudes, etc., in order to make them look funny. / The phrase is in common usage throughout English society, employed by headline writers in broadsheet gazettes and tabloids as well as colloquially and is also used in English speaking countries such as Australia. In colloquial usage, ‘taking the piss’ is also used to refer to someone or something that makes a claim which is not in line with a recognised agreement e.g. an invoice that is double the quoted price with no explanation for the added charge could be said to ‘take the piss’, or likewise if something consistently misses a deadline IKEA / IKEA is a privately-held, international home products retailer that sells flat pack furniture, accessories, and bathroom and kitchen items in their retail stores around the world. Wearing flowers is not Daisy-Mae’s thing and you can tell by the look on her face. I decked her out for her birthday photo and she didn’t want to cooperate at all until she saw her birthday gift of the satin mouse. That’s when she got this weird and funny look on her face. Daisy-Mae, our Ragdoll cat turned 2 years old on June 22, 2009 and I took this photo for her birthday! Taken with: Nikon D60 – Lens: Nikkor 18-55mm
Was it good for you? Confession: I have a totally warped sense of humor (humour). I had this mundane headshot of a nice cow and an equally mundane shot of a famous cover girl (grin) who at the time was making $2500 USD/hour. Jeeez, ya know her smile is just about perfect for Ms. Cow. Viola… two cows in paradise! You may spank me now.

HI! / Many of you will be aware there has been somewhat of an upheaval across this website these past weeks regarding in general – the rules and policies re expected behaviour and how they have been enforced. In response to this, RB admin and management are working really hard to put together as clear a statement re what is, and what is not acceptable behaviour, and what the resultant penalty for ‘overstepping’ any particular mark should be. Excellent!!! They now have an (apparently draft) document on this that is beginning it’s process of ‘solicited feedback’, firstly by having been assessed by RB staff, currently it is available to group hosts to view and comment on, and sometime (soon, I expect) it should be made available to the general RB membership to add their feedback. This is all a very fine, extremely difficult and confusing (due to the already extremely varied viewpoints expressed) and SLOW process. I have read the proposed new rules and guidelines pdf document I believe now 7 times, making notes as I go. On the whole, there are a few rather minor issues that I believe MAY be queried re how they are to be defined and enforced, but overall, everything is extremely clear and well set out. The earlier ‘rules and policies’ (when I finally found them) I ALSO thought were quite clear, well set out and defined. The one major difference between these 2 documents is that the new one allows for a ‘review process’ for those who wish to activate it, whereas there was no recourse to review before. / This is, in principle, a truly EXCELLENT addition to the rules and guidelines. So far – all fine and good and excellent??? Yes??? With, in my honest and truly thought through opinion, ONE EXTREMELY SERIOUS OMISSION WHICH IS BEING TOTALLY IGNORED AS EVERYONE (well – only hosts so far) RUSH TO AIR THEIR OPINIONS AND ARGUE OVER THE FINE PRINT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES – AS WELL AS ISSUES NOT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES AT ALL (LOL)....... The primary reason there was a great upheaval and huge anger and disillusionment throughout the RB community was NOT the ‘enforcement of any rule or guideline per se’. The primary reason for the huge upheavals and the extremely upsetting and destructive arguing in the forums over the past weeks was the PERCEPTION OF UNFAIR AND INCONSISTENT APPLICATION OF RULES AND GUIDELINES. RB management HAS ADMITTED that, since it’s not well advertised assumption of altered rules in February, it’s application of those rules HAS NOT BEEN CONSISTENT OR FAIR. Nowhere in this new document, or in any of the information provided to, or solicited (from so far only staff and hosts) does Red Bubble management provide ANY information at all on how they intend to implement not just this new rules and policy document (in whatever slightly edited form it may finally see the light of day), but also on how they intend to firstly make sure that these new guidelines and rules are implemented CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY, and, how they are going to be made to BE SEEN TO BE IMPLEMENTED CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY. If the previous rules were unable to be administered consistently and fairly – what reason does anyone at this point in time have to consider that the implementation of ANY format of ANY rules and guidelines will in future be able to be more fair and consistent than to this point in time? In my honest opinion – an EXTREMELY BIG HOLE in RB management’s response to the recent upheavals. I would hope this could be addressed well BEFORE any potential new rules and guidelines need be submitted to ANY feedback at all….. I welcome any and all opinions here on this – my statement of my opinion. However, I will not reply to any comments left here until, at the earliest – sometime tomorrow. / I am, at the moment, extremely tired. I have spent by far the greater proportion of the past weeks on RB policy and procedure issues, with virtually NO time to myself and / or my artwork. For the sake of my sanity, I am now, on posting this journal, going to turn my internet off, and concentrate for a bit on what I should be spending most of my time doing – my photography (as well as resting lol). / I resolve truly to not delete any comments here that may disagree with what I have written – I am interested in fair and open expression for all. / Cheers - / Kallena xx
