In the early days (1840’s), the only mounted unit in the US Army was the 1st Dragoons. In 1849, the 2nd Dragoons were formed, as was another unit called the Regiment of Mounted Rifles. Dragoons were mounted infantry in California. They carried a weapon known as a musketoon in the early days, which was a shortened musket. Later, they carried carbines. They basically used their horses to move them from place to place, not for fighting.Most, if not all, of their fighting was done dismounted. Beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture in bright colors make this location a favorite for the artist to paint. In the background is the tower of the casa Del Balboa which houses thee museums in the park, the Museum of Photgraphic Arts, The San Diego History Museum and Historical Society and The Rail Road Museum. I paint scenes of this park often and have many to share. Its an inspiration setting for me as an artist and San Diegan. When I was a young boy at lot of my art influences I can attribute to school trips to the museums. Self Portrait by RD Riccoboni This painting is intentionally not as colorful as most of my paintings. Mixed media acrylic and ink. I began painting when at the age of five years old. My mom had a paint by numbers set of the ship “The USS Constitution – Old Ironsides” and I got into it and finished the painting. With the left over paint created some other little paintings on paper and scraps of wood. Torrey Pine Tree, pen and ink drawing by Rd Riccoboni. Torrey pine trees is the rarest native pine in the United States. They grow on an eight mile stretch of San Diego coastline and on Santa Rosa Island off the California coast. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Because of the efforts and foresight of the people in this area, 2000 acres of land are as they were before San Diego was developed -with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. One can imagine what California must have looked like to the early settlers, or to the Spanish explorers, or even to the first California residents here.
