Ahhh…how I miss home. Taken from a mountain locally known as “The Target” just behind my village of Cwmparc. (It’s nicknamed The Target because so many people take their rifles up there!) This shot overlooks Treherbert. Just on the left you can see the peak of Pen Pych, and to the right of the photo you can see a long road along the side of the Rhigos mountain. I had to drive over this every day to get to my high school. This is one of my favourite spots to come and sit. When I was younger I used to come here with my brother and cousins to pick wimberry’s. Then our gran would make the best wimberry pie out of them!! Mmmm…
Ambitious and far-sighted plans for a multi-media tactile centre about South Wales Coal Mining Heritage was proposed in the early nineties for a redundant coal mine in the Rhondda area of Wales. The project got funding and went ahead. / I didn’t go in for the coal mine interpretation, I was more interested in the exciting opportunity to design a themed garden and playscape on what had been an old shunting yards outside, where coal had been loaded onto railway wagons. The ‘garden’ area was quite small and when we first saw it, consisted of dereliction and black sludge- but by a short year later it had been miraculously transformed into my concept, the ‘Energy Zone’; a playground, with a theme based on the Formation of Coal.
