  • Photo taken yesterday (16 January 2009) from our back window. The Grenfell RFS, including my husband Art, was responding to the first of four grass fires along the Bimbi Road from Grenfell, NSW. If you look carefully, you can see the first of the smoke driffting into the photo on the left. The fires all started within minutes of each other along the road, all on the one side of the road, probably deliberately lit. Luckily, response was quick and all fires were extinguished before they were fanned out of control by the strong winds. Photo taken with my Olympus SP-565UZ.

  • Firefighters demonstrate techniques used in extinguishing gas and liquid fires, by bending the flame away, coolin exposures and accessing the control valve to isolate the fuel supply.

  • Firefighters demonstrate the ineffectiveness of water on a flammable fuel fire. The fire is intensified and spread by the water spray, something which can cause a small kitchen or workshop fire to spread into an engulfed room in seconds.

  • I took this while performing mopping up operations near Marysville VIC. I was part of a NSWRFS strike team that was sent down there after the devastating Feb 7th fires. The only post processing was to change the image to B&W. Taken with my S3IS.

  • We had a little Bubblers trip to my favorite fox location today with enough folks that I’m not even going to bother to list names – just expect to see a LOT of fox pics posted today. This is the alpha female – I followed a side trail, carefully crawled over a log blocking the trail, to find her and another male (I think the beta male) in an opening in a heavily wooded area. The male was bringing her food, which she hungrily scarfed down. Then the male ran back the way he came while she stayed in the clearing. Bringing food to the female is pretty good evidence that she’s delivered – foxes don’t usually share food otherwise. You’ll notice the dark hole behind her – that’s one of the drainage pipes that the foxes use to hide and to den. This may be the new den site. My wife (who is not a wildlife biology expert) looked at this pic and thought she might be nursing. She didn’t mind me hanging out close to her and taking a few (hundred) pics. The lighting was tough, with bright light mixing in with deep shadows, and to top it off, heavy brush and limbs poking into the frame – technically not the best shot, but it does illustrate the ongoing soap opera that is the fox world. I wound up filling up the rest of an 8gb card. When I took my pack off to get another card, she decided to disappear into the den. Also, Pock, the usual alpha male does not seem to be the father; the beta male is the one bringing her food and I suspect is the father. Hmmmmmmm . . .
