  • Three middle aged monkeys impart the wisdom of the nearly-ancients. A cartoon by Kudelka published in The Weekend Australian on 3/6/07.

  • Took a different approach for the photoshpcreative07 competition and decided to reverse the concept. Here a lone survivor condemned to a future of infinite chaos manages to escape back into a alternate past of infinite possibility. This could be a physical escape or projected from within the travellers mind; an internal escape to fantasy, much like the ending of Brazil. Have since sold the image for use on the cover of the Griffith Review – yay.

  • A RedBubble calendar review - with pics

By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

  • Sometimes it’s more fun not to break it to them gently. First published in “Review”, weekend Australian 20/10/07.

  • Portrait of William F. Buckley, Jr. – 1925 – February 26, 2008 / Oil on Linen, life-sized. (b/w photograph of original painting). / William F. Buckley, Jr. died today at 82. I painted a portrait of William F. Buckley, Jr from sittings, many years ago. The man was a phenomenal wit and intellect, used the English language exquisitely, and was a thoroughly charming and a towering human being. / I was in my twenties and had the cheek to write him and ask if I might paint his portrait. I said we were both questing for the truth. / His famous & phenomenal secretary, Frances Bronson, wrote back and said WFB asked three questions needing answers: / 1. Might he read during sittings. / 2. May he bring his cocker spaniel. / 3. How much will it cost…IF he likes it. / We worked out the particulars and he came to my studio in Greenwich Village, New York for sittings. / He was very famous, doing radio, tv and publishing his magazine The National Review. Buckley was a beacon of conservative thought causing trouble, uproar, and having an enormous amount of fun. The author of over fifty books. He ran for mayor of New York once, and (expecting the outcome in advance) when asked what he’d do first if elected, said, he’d “demand a recount!” He debated everyone with equal intensity and mischief, and had a fabulous time with sailing around the world, writing essays and books filled with his astute observations of American politics. When he turned 50, he decided to learn the harpsichord and ended up giving public performances. At the same half century mark he started writing fiction novels, spy stories reflecting some early work of his own. / He was reviled and adored in equal measure, not a bad outcome for a life fully lived. Meeting him and painting his portrait has always been one of the highlights of my life. Totally gracious, charming, eloquent, brilliant man. I miss him already. / Regrettably, this is only photo I have of the finished portrait, and it’s black and white. The full version included him sitting in his chair, lap full of papers, a pencil in hand pressed against his cheek, his portable typewriter at his side, cluttered busy desk, and an office filled with books stacked on the floor and every surface. Addendum: There are so many tributes now appearing about Willam F. Buckley’s life and wit, and this is typical, and so good, a comment made by Ronald Reagan in 1985: “Once when Bill was asked what job he wanted in the Administration of his friend the President, he replied in his typically retiring and deferential way: “Ventriloquist.” More on my website, The Hawks Perch

  • William F. Buckley, Jr. / From the oil portrait by Barbara Sparhawk / Never expected to do this, but I’ve been flooded with requests for the past three days on my website, / The Hawks Perch / for t shirts with Mr Buckley’s portrait, so I decided to upload this. / Life is full of the improbable. I hope now there’s some follow through with sales!

  • Sex and The City - A Blokes Perspective

Good morning beautiful bubblers everywhere! An insight into a conversation that took place recently… / My better half (mbh) “Do you want to go to the movies this weekend?” / Me, “Sure, can we watch Indiana Jones?” / Mbh, “No, if you watch Sex in The City with me then I’ll watch Indiana with you next weekend.” There end’eth the first lesson in relationship harmony… Compromise = Blackmail! So, off we went on Sunday afternoon… / Yes, Sunday afternoon when I should’ve been at the MCG expressing my purely hetro-sexual man-love for Chris Judd and the rest of the Carlton Football Club but no, Village Cinemas was the preferred destination. / Now, I shall not give away too much of the story… ummmm, plot…. but I soon discovered that my better half was in for an emotional roller coaster ride that only four women in a strangely scripted blockbuster can deliver. / Another reason why I agreed to this compromise was that I was also promised that there was going to be ample scenes of maiden beauties frolicking in their laciest… / Lies. / I found the movie slightly educational… there are apparently other labels in the world apart from Sony, Canon and Manfrotto! / ...and there is some other fellow in the world trying to rip off my name… Mr. Louis Vuitton, look out! / For the ladies, there are 81 costume changes, relationship highs and lows, references to sexual gymnastics, shoes, handbags and enough emotions to empty out a box of kleenex! Why you lot subject yourselves to such torture I still have no idea!! / Just to give my personal opinion on a related matter, we sat next a woman and her young daughter (10’ish) why you would bring a child to a movie like that??? To an adult most of what happens on the screen during this movie is quite normal but not for a childs eyes and ears. / Anyway I survived the 2.5 hours and even found some scenes quite humorous! / Rating… 3 / 5 / Looking forward to Indiana Jones next week!

/ A couple of months ago I was honoured to be contacted by the Griffith REVIEW which is a publication of topical essays, memoirs and reports by some of the best writers and artists Australia has to offer, which is put out by Griffith University 4 times a year in the form of a book They were enquiring whether they could use some of my art, the painting Baby Bull Production / to illustrate an essay in the upcoming edition “Essentially Creative”. The art appears, I’m proud to say, in the final essay “Visionaries, or the Cello of Katerina Valentine” by auther Helen Barnes-Bulley Helen is such a talented writer, she’s a Sydney University graduate, studied writing for performance at NIDA, had plays produced through the ABC and won an award through the Australian Writer’s Guild in ‘85, she also won the ABC National Award for Radio Drama in ‘89….whoa to be in such company is indeed a real honour Today after I received my very own 2 x copies of the book at a value of around AU$30 I was really taken aback….I hadn’t seen the publication before today, and just assumed it must just be a newspaper publication, but this is actually a beautiful soft cover book and the cover illustration is Mona Lisa by Ronald Wigman fellow bubbler / “Essentially Creative” edition 23 of Griffith REVIEW So take heart peoples and be encouraged won’t you, as both Ronald and I were found right here at red bubble

As we now have reached the penultimate release of the T Shirt wave of the Game of Kings (GoK) project I would like to reflect on some of its aspects since the idea was first floated some eight months ago. This is a project of artistic and personal growth. / One man had an idea and was so excited at its possibilities he asked like minded artists to contribute. His own enthusiasm was enough to recruit his first choice wish list. That person of course was Simon Sherry. / The fact that this project has grown and evolved over these past months is testament to the other artists chosen. / This has been a project of testing ones comfort zones and abilities. / If I can draw attention to the artists themselves. / Incredibly popular members such as Scott Robinson, Roger (Ruby Red Design), Glen Smith (No Frills Art) and Jen Hacking (thickblackoutline) have all offered something outside of their usual styles. / It may not be evident at first but a closer look at Scott and Rogers work sees line work, half tone and colour experimentation unlike previous works. Jen has abandoned her usually whimsical style for harder and more aggressive character and experimented with effects like diamonds. Glen who usually works in themes and more topical issues has created a montage of images to reveal stunning characters that deserve their own tales. / Other popular members sjem and Jordan Clarke have shown us hidden skills and strengths and introduced totally new styles never exhibited here in their personal Red Bubble folios. / Sjem with his architecturally inspired CAD drawings of monster steam punk engines and Jordan with her hand drawn and masterfully coloured horse related creatures. / Criminally neglected Jim of Quigonjim Design and LilyM have stunned everyone with their unique takes on their characters, which once again move away from their traditional subjects. In doing so have found a whole new audience. / The collection of artists that comprise the White army have worked together, communicating ideas and suggestions to present the pinnacle of what they can offer. / Something not seen in the (soon to be opened to the fans) GoK Group is a forum called the Works In Progress (WIP) In this forum all artist come together to reveal drafts, line drawings, colour choices and any number of design ideas for their character. / Offering everything for artistic criticism. / It is a hotbed of creativity. / The way art is presented is also a wonderful concept with artists creating GIFs to animate colour options and the creative process. Sjem even created a 3D movie that revolved around his creation. Magic stuff and all will be available to view in the coming months. Then we have Simon who has designed and drawn the Black army. / This has been a magical experience as the creatures have evolved from dual colour, almost silhouette pieces to physically imposing monster made of metal and lava. / Simon ever the perfectionist has discarded totally finished pieces to start again because a better idea has caught his imagination. / The amount of artwork that Simon has produced to complete this project could be exhibited in it’s own book and hopefully will also be put up for viewing in the later months. / What people must also realize is that these are not simple works dropped off months ago to be released when it’s time arrives. / One of the reasons that the GoK releases have been fortnightly over the last three months is because art is being worked on right up to the release date. / No one is totally happy with what the have to offer and think they can do better. / I believe it’s this dedication and the acceptance of nothing but the best has made GoK so popular and given it good sales as well as great support from the Red bubble community and Administration. / Believe me when I tell you this is only the beginning and there are many other exciting things to add to the project as well as involving the community as contributors and as participants. As mentioned before, the GoK is more than T Shirts. These are characters in a story that relates to an actual chess game that has been created as part of a bigger story, the tale which has been growing, albeit cryptically over the last three months and as each piece is added we will move further along the the story path to the actual battle and the grand conclusion. So strap yourself in, it gonna keep coming and growing all the time. Danny / The setting of the board as stands. An exciting new collaboration that opens new possibilities of what can be achieved on Red Bubble. Nine artists and one writer come together to weave a tale of cosmic-level obsession, treachery and warfare around the game of chess. Featuring the talents of: / With additional behind-the-scenes content from:

  • MY PERSONAL STANCE ON SOME (LIMITED) RED BUBBLE POLICY
    by DragonFlyer

Firstly, I wish to apologise to you, my friends, for not keeping up with your comments on my work and replying to you as I would normally…

Firstly, I wish to apologise to you, my friends, for not keeping up with your comments on my work and replying to you as I would normally try to do. Unfortunately, my attention has been dragged away from the ‘art’ part of the community here at RB, to more of a ‘huge family blow-up explosion’.... I am also very tired as I slept extremely little last night. I am also aware that Peter the Administrator must be in a very similar state, as he was also up extremely late last night. I hope many of you are aware of the incident that has provoked this. Helen Bascom has – in the time I have been here on RB – come to be my friend. My very good friend. What happened to her has upset me greatly. I did not sleep much last night. But – for me – there is an even larger issue at stake here than the summary deletion of Helen’s account from Red Bubble, without her having the chance to put her version of events. The issue at stake here is that Helen’s account was deleted summarily – with as far as I have been able to ascertain – NO INVESTIGATION of the circumstances – solely on the basis of a ‘report as inappropriate / personally abusive’ made by a third party who had absolutely NO direct involvement in the events or comments he / she was reporting! This reflects an ‘apparent’ zero tolerance’ policy here at RB for ‘personal abuse’... Yes, I agree, this sounds very good. Personal abuse should not be tolerated. However – this incident clearly highlights that – unlike some issues such as the potential for child pornography, where it is very easy to draw a straight line in the sand regarding who, at what age is or is not a ‘child’, the definition of what is considered ‘personal abuse’ vs the definition of describing someone’s creative work as personally offensive may NOT be so clearly defined. In this case, neither the person who made the original comment on Helen’s journal, nor Helen herself, felt the need to ‘report to RB’. Yes, RB DOES tell us to ‘report’ – do NOT go getting mixed up in arguments yourself – but – to my knowledge this issue was ended! Neither Helen, nor miron, had continued any form of offensive behaviour toward each other regarding this particular exchange. In the past, I myself have reported private bmails sent to me using the exact same words Helen wrote in her thread. The RB response to my complaint at the time was along the lines of “this appears to be dying down – let it be – if there’s any more report again and we’ll act”. At the time I was extremely upset. However, now, in retrospect, I can see that this response was correct! The matter DID end there of it’s own accord. The matter between Helen and miron may also most likely have ended right there of it’s own accord, and there would now be NO pages and pages of forum arguments that have gone WAY out of control, there would be no people favouriting any and all Tees with statements of F#$ You an dF#$% Off they can find, there would be no people removing all of their works for sale on RB, there would be no people deleting their accounts at RB and leaving in anger and disgust that Helen was given no chance to defend herself against this report by AN UNKNOWN AND UNNAMED THIRD PARTY WHO – for whatever personal reasons of their own, REINFLAMED a probably dead issue for their own personal reasons! In the 9-10 months I have been a member of Red Bubble I have come to greatly respect the motives and capacities of the RB management and staff team. Firstly, when I joined, this was my very first step back into a world from which I had been a virtual recluse for 7-8 years. I was very scared. It was things such as RB’s firm NSFW filter policy, which protected me from having to unintentionally view work I could have found extremely distressing, as well as their firm ‘play nice’ policy which enabled me to feel ‘safe enough’ to finally build up the nerve to join and take my first steps back into the world. I am, and will remain, incredibly grateful to Red Bubble, it’s management and members, for welcoming me – safely – here. Red Bubble has – since that time, provided me with the most wonderfully supportive community – as well as the opportunity of for the first time in my life ever making FRIENDS! This personal and emotional development and strengthening has also allowed in me a development and strengthening of my art, and my sense and confidence in myself as an artist. For this I also am, and will always remain incredibly grateful. I was extremely happy and proud of Peter (and the whole management team’s) response to the great outpourings of emotion over the issue of ‘porn’ on RB some months ago. They took a firm stance that in my eyes was fair, and manageable to police fairly. Peter has stated in one of the forum threads earlier today that the team needs a chance to assess what has happened and formulate a response – maybe even a change in policy – as it is appropriate. I agree they need the time and opportunity to do this. I hope that, in assessing these events, they will manage to see that such a punitive ‘zero tolerance’ policy on an issue that is NOT clearly black and white, that has MANY areas of grey in the HUGE domain between an artwork I may find personally offensive, and the aims of the person who created the work in either deliberately personally offending me or not – or the other way around… An artwork I may create to express an emotion or concept extremely close and important to me may, without any prior knowledge or intention on my part, clearly inflame another member. We may exchange our views rather forcefully in a comment thread. WE may – between ourselves, be totally satisfied that each has had his / her say – the matter is now closed. / Current RB policy allows – in any such situation – to ANY member of RB – the same result as happened to Helen Bascom. The immediate FULL DELETION of her account solely on the report of a third party with no examination of what their personal agenda may be in the making of a report about an incident that does not concern them. Any policy that allows such a punitive response to any third party report – with no investigation and NO opportunity for those actually involved in the event to explain themselves and the context in which the reported event took place is totally open to manipulation by anyone with an underlying malignant agenda against any of the participants to act out their own ‘vengeance’ with no fear of assessment of whether their complaint is fair and just. I stand by my assessment that such policy – totally open to such malignant manipulation (whether that occurred in this particular case or not!) is BAD policy. Peter – and all your team – I have grown to respect you all and the true motives you have in creating this COMMUNITY in this time I have been here. You have shown that you ARE capable of taking the hard decisions that must inevitably arise in managing a community as diverse as this. I will continue to actively take part in the ‘artists’ community’ aspect of this site, as I believe your motives for establishing it have been good, and I have great respect for what you have achieved. Also – I have to justify to myself why I am not taking the complete and final step of deleting my own account here in support of my friend, as others of Helen’s and my friends have done. I will miss them greatly here, though I am sure we will not lose contact in ‘the world’. I truly hope that, when given the time and opportunity to calmly analyse what has occurred you will be able to enstate a policy that calls for mandatory review of the details of instances such as this reported to management in this way. I also truly hope I will not be even more hurt and disappointed than I already have been this past day…... You have not given me reason to believe I would be…. Kallena xx

Lensbaby lenses allow you to discover a new way of seeing, and recording what’s all around you....

Lensbaby lenses allow you to discover a new way of seeing, and recording what’s all around you. (Composer and Muse Lenses) They attach to all well-known SLR cameras, and are light and easy to carry around. These SLR lenses allow you to achieve a variety of creative effects in camera, and you can change the effects by swapping one optic out and dropping another one in.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to play with lensbabies for a few years now, I bought my first one in 2005. Being able to tilt and shift the lens to produce less or more blur is a joy. I love playing with shallow depth of field, and with the addition of their macro add-ons I can shoot close-up shallow depth of field at very little extra expense! They also produce an amazing wide angle attachment for when you want to see more! My Lensbaby gallery I must admit I love my Lensbaby original, which produces the most beautiful creamy dreamy soft blur around the outside, with a little bit of focus in just one spot. To change aperture you drop out the little black disk with a hole in it, and replace it with another. Lensbabies don’t communicate with the camera, so it’s up to you to focus using the viewfinder. Hi Lite was shot with LB Original However, since obtaining the Lensbaby Composer last year, I’ve switched allegiances. Composer is a sweet lens, much easier to use, and has the optional drop in Optic Swap System! The Optic Swap System lets you switch the optic in your lens. Composer arrives with the Double Glass Optic installed which has a sharp ‘Sweet Spot’ of sharp focus that falls away into a beautiful blur. You can move the sweet spot around your photo by bending the lens. When you want a different look, you can take out Double Glass and drop in Single Glass for a more primitive look, Plastic for a toy camera look or Pinhole/Zone plate to do pinhole photography! Lensbaby has just announced two more optics:- Fisheye and Soft Focus, which means you can have six different looks with your Composer or Muse. (Optic Swap System) For those of us with movie-making capability with their DSLRs, Lensbabies offer the ability to add atmospheric blur to movies as well! The Glory was shot using LB Composer with deliberate defocus. Breezy was shot using LB 3G, the predecessor to Control Freak. The Lensbaby Group has some outstanding examples of work done with these lenses. Don’t forget, focus is over-rated. (Lensbaby accessories)

We thought it would be a good idea to take a more in depth look at some of our products, for those who are new to RedBubble and as a refresher for bubblers who’ve been with us for a little longer. A great deal of effort goes into chosing products, examining alternative formats and testing the print quality so we can do justice to the great artwork on RedBubble. / / It’s a little known fact that our quest for the best t-shirt quality meant travelling as far as Israel. We wanted to make sure we were getting the best out of the printer so we decided to track down the guy who invented it. As he was so helpful, we thought it was only fair to start our series of product reviews with t-shirts. The RedBubble T-Shirt / Designs by PROM11, Josh Le Good, Chris Wahl, annaOMline and veneer RedBubble T-Shirt designs are printed on 100% cotton American Apparel fabric. American Apparel are are known for their fabric quality and are generous when it comes to the rights of their workers. They’re ‘sweatshop free’ and they’re also committed to implemeting environmentally friendly initiatives and reducing their ecological footprint. / Designs by brettisagirl rubyred, and Steve Leadbeater RedBubble tees are produced using direct to garment printing. We use an industrial version of traditional ink jet printing technology (just like the ink jet printer you have at home). It allows a wide range of colours to be laid down very quickly. / Design by BigFatRobot From people who’ve been won over: When it comes to print-on-demand, the issue that most people are worried about is the quality of the product. Yes, it’s nice that you can upload a design and buy it, or support other artists that are using the platform, but if the tees suck then you might as well not bother. Happily, the tees do not suck, I don’t think you’d be able to guess that they came from a POD company, and they really show off the merits of direct-to-garment printing. The t-shirts themselves are from AA stock, which is so ubiquitous in the industry that it’s getting pretty silly me even telling you about them. – hideyourarms t-shirt blog Thanks for the great shirt, the printing really captured the sharp detail of the design. – PimoSupremo I love the way the coloring and shadowing came out. It looks awesome on the slate colored shirt. I made a great choice. I am so pleased with the quality. Bravo to the printers for doing an excellent job!!! Thank you!! – red addiction I bought some of my own designs from redbubble to check the print qualily, i was blown away with the detail of the print and the t-shirts kick ass too. – veneer / Designs by Nick Ford, Panoramic, Japu and Vicki Isted One last thing, we’ll be giving everyone FREE SHIPPING when you order THREE or more t-shirts for the next couple of weeks. That’s right, we didn’t type wrong, you didn’t read wrong, order three tees and the shipping is zero. Merry Christmas!
