Today Helen McLean and I met up to take some photos at her place. That was until we had a streak of craziness and decided to uproot the whole shoot and head into the city. You certainly get some strange looks when you lug around a red armchair on a saturday afternoon amidst hundreds of city goers. Anyway, Helen is slowly getting through all the post production and as each shot goes up I’ll add it to this entry rather than clogging everyone’s activity monitors. I recently had the pleasure of working with a ridiculously fun model, Nicole, on a retro pin up shoot. It’s funny how some shoots I walk away from shaking my head and praying for some decent results, and then others I freak out of the way home about how much space it’s going to eat up on my hard drive. This shoot falls into the latter category. Nicole was so easy to work with and everyone involved was relaxed and up for a laugh. We were working outside after some heavy rain which ruled out many of the ‘usual’ pin up poses which require getting down on the ground, but the energy of the shoot was such fun we hardly noticed the restriction. It’s been a while since I’ve shot anything in this genre, but there is something about the ridiculousness and humor of it which I really genuinely love. PATCHWORK HISTORY / / Patchwork Elephant I have a real fascination for/with stitchery and after getting a whole dose of it through a good friend, my work started to take on more of that stitched and bound look… as you see about in Patchwork Elephant but i’ve had the fetish for as long as i can remember…probably because my mum is a super sewer and the sound of the sewing machine or watching her thread a needle are impressed deep in my psych Patchwork Quilting goes back many years. Examples of quilting have been found in tombs of Pharohs dating back to 3400BC. Joseph’s coat of many colors was probably patchwork. Even armour was made by quilting heavy fabrics together. Quilted bed covers were recorded in household inventories from the 17th century. Patchwork quilting has even evolved into an art form known as art quilts. I played around with the paint drips and making butterflies and crowns and dresses by folding the paper in half…..but eventually just started drawing quite quickly without much though, and began a whole range of new characters all drawn onto brown paper, I made them into a couple of calendars, and they are all available here on redbubble in card/print/calendar or many of them as tshirts also.
