My contribution to the Graphic Arts group challenge – ‘Resurgence’. The criteria was to create a poster featuring the word ‘resurgence’ to celebrate bringing the group back to life. A phoenix is a timeless and perfect way to illustrate this idea, which I created from a public domain image of a phoenix, added some flames (all vector graphics). Some complimentary type outlining a few of the mediums showcased in the group, the all-important title, and the web address. Final touch is a background texture of old paper.

I live close by the sea, and can spend hours just watching its changing moods. For this shot, I placed the camera inches above the water surface, close to small wind-waves beating up onto a sandy beach, with a blue jellyfish stranded nearby. Imagining that the surges from the sea would bring life back to the dying animal, I christened this image “Resurgence”, and made a logo to represent the concept. For the technically minded: Procedure, for those who might be interested in trying it out for themselves – I used Photoshop CS (8). / 1. The word “Resurgence” typed in a suitable ‘thick’ font, and initial letter stripped away to another layer. / 2. The letter “R” turned to a vector path and reshaped to be able to enclose the rest of the word. / 3. The concept of ‘surge’ withing the word ‘resurgence’ selected as a theme to be worked into the final graphic creation. Therefore, a suitable curvaceous-shape (CS) that reflects the sweeping curve of waves, is selected and placed onto a new layer. / 4. Three sets of the ‘CS’ are each placed onto their own layers, resized to provide perspective, and recolored with sequentially lightening shades of blue, overlapping. / 5. The ‘reshaped-R’ is colored red with a dark blue surround, made to overlap the nearby ‘CS’ to achieve linkage. / 6. The rest of the word resurgence is colored light blue, and overlapped onto part of the enlarged ‘R’. / 7. A bright yellow fills the background, and the whole graphic is cropped so that there is a small ‘natural’ surround of the yellow background. / 8. Saved as a JPG. / 9. Pasted as a new layer over a close-up photograph of small wind-waves. / 10. Levels filter applied, individually on each color channel, to the waves photo layer to bring out depth, contrast and quality of photo, especially encouraging the blues to show. / 11. Graphic (with yellow background) set to “Pin Light” blending mode at 60% opacity to allow the wave imagery in the waves photo to show through and appear to become incorporated luminously into the graphic. / 12. Result saved as a jpg image, and uploaded to RedBubble. Keith Richardson.
Resurgence, South Island, New Zealand. The water here comes out of the mountain. It’s an old Maori birthing pool with cold, clear water. Source of new life. Resurgence.
For the Resurgence challenge over at my new favourite group Graphic Arts Started and finished in class time, should have been working on my folio! If anyone asks, this is for coffee packaging. I didn’t have much time, so this whole thing is hinging on the one font, which is called Ruritania by Paul Lloyd, and the images are from illuminated manuscripts of the 13th and I think 15th century.
This sea foam isn’t actually from a sea…it’s a small alkali pond. These “soda lakes” often end up with these soap suds on the shores during windy days. In the background are the Sierra Nevadas and a large thunderstorm was passing to the south, which you can see to the left.
