Bullshit! And this is why. I realised whilst reading other peoples comments that some people have been dissuaded from taking photos around interesting industrial locations. After all you must be a terrorist if you are taking a photo of a refinery, right! Thought I’d share some of my experiences on the subject as I am very often in these kinds of situations. My day job is photographing cars for magazines. I often do this in industrial locations and sometimes near sensitive installations such as refineries, ports, airports, you name it. I’ve been accosted by security guards, customs agents, police, ignorant old farts, you name it. I’m sure someone has already reported me to ASIO. I’m not a lawyer so don’t try to use me as an excuse if you end up in jail, do your own legal research, consult a lawyer if you think you need to, but this is the information I have obtained from both State and Federal Police when I’ve called to question the legality of such photography. Basically, there are no laws which prevent you photographing any property from a public place! Private properties such as shopping centres, subways, airports etc are a completely different story whilst within the property. The property owner sets the rules and you must abide or leave. But if you are outside the private property and on public land then shoot away. There can be local council By-Laws preventing photography, such as on some beaches, so it is worth asking the question if you think it might be relevant. However, any Police officer can do just about anything they like to you should they have good reason to suspect you of Terrorist activity. They can confiscate your camera, detain and question you. My solution to this is to have some forms of identification or samples of my work, in a small compact Folio, which can be shown to quickly convince them of my real intentions and identity. I have a Canon CPS card with my photo on it and business cards, or you could join one of the professional photographic associations (if you are eligible) some of which now offer membership cards for this very reason. There’s heaps of good information here on the legality of photography. It’s worth reading. / http://www.4020.net/words/photorights.php Having said that, you can’t then just do anything you like with the images because of trade mark and copyright issues with buildings and company logos, but that’s a whole different issue anyway. Just being allowed to take the photo doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like with it. My suggestion is that if you are going to be shooting in really questionable places AND you think you might have trouble with security, then try to contact the security people first and tell them who you are and what you are doing. DO NOT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION, you don’t need it! Just offer them the courtesy of letting them know who you are and what you are doing so that they don’t have to worry about you. Shell, for example, is a bit touchy about this kind of thing. I always call them and tell them of my intentions to shoot around their refineries. They appreciate it and we both play nicely. Same thing at airports such as Moorabin or Essendon. It works. Know your rights and don’t let the ignorant push you around. Of course never let things get out of hand. I can honestly say that I would be the first to call the police should a security guard get heavy handed with me. Not that it’s ever happened, and hopefully it never will. JJ

Recently we have had to contemplate what is acceptable art on RedBubble from a social perspective. The first point to make is that we are not the government. Our governments and courts are there to protect freedom of expression. At RedBubble we believe they should do so vigorously. This does not mean RedBubble needs to be the home for all expression. We can defend the ideal while still having a narrower editorial focus at RedBubble. We have never allowed pornography, for example. So, what is acceptable? Two particular works have bought this issue into focus. They are: We have asked a wide cross section of the RedBubble community about these works and more generally about RedBubble’s content guidelines. On balance, and after much debate, we have decided on guidelines that will result in the removal of these works. Of particular concern to us is the conjunction of violent imagery with a national symbol held in reverence by many. The net result is not a political statement but a statement that demeans an entire nation. Such a statement is inflammatory and does not further rational discussion. The general statement is that we will not allow works that have malicious use of stereotypes intended to attack or demean a particular gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or nationality. It is possible to make genuine political or social points without stepping over this line. We don’t expect this policy to be welcomed by everybody. RedBubble supports free speech and everyone’s right to express unpopular views (or even popular views). But we also need to foster an environment where the debate can be rationally held without connotations of violence or the inciting of hate. We will leave these works up for the next little while so that the full community can be informed about the issue. You can find a full explanation of our content guidelines here.

I am dichotomy in action. The sort of straight laced person who would just about rather die than watch porno, but who could kiss you in ways that made you wonder why you wasted all that time before on other people’s blow jobs! However, you should know, it’s not because porn shocks me or that I was raised to believe it’s wrong. It’s that .. I don’t think excesses of the flesh are good for people, based on observation. I know they aren’t good for me. Sex should be somewhat ethereal and, quite possibly, somewhat like Shakespearean comedy: beautiful, quasi-understandable, a little mysterious, but none too serious. So should life! Tell me something! I believe religion can be, and should be, the search for the truth. Sadly, much religion is not, but that is supposed to be the purpose of it. And rules, well .. there are rules and then there are rules. The apostles, one of them anyway, brought out that if you live by the spirit then you do not have to follow the laws. It does not make the rules of the laws null and void, though; it means sometimes rules are guidelines which you may overstep in need; and sometimes they are, because of your search for the truth, an inherent part of your nature, which you have worked to build within yourself, so that you do it naturally and the law as written becomes superfluous to you. Which goes along nicely with what Jesus said about the sabbath being made for man, and not man for the sabbath. I used to think that religions were about learning rules, forcing yourself to fit within certain parameters. Now I know, done rightly, it’s about learning to be yourself, without being overridden by anxiety or anger, with forgiveness of others, and coming to understand life. The rules help you, not if you force yourself into them without thought except to fit in, but by giving you something to meditate upon: why they exist, what good do they do, what harm could come from doing/not doing this, etc. And, truthfully, many of the rules for the people Israel were about sanitation, basic honesty, prevention of diseases being spread, raising children who are not abused or molested, treating the people of your household right whether you think they belong to you or not, and not abusing animals. Sure, some of the penalties were harsh, but they had made life or death promises to follow the laws, so… Rules are important to society, religious or otherwise, so long as the rules make sense for that society. Some of the rules now, well, they don’t; but some of the basic ones, like not murdering people, are still quite skippy .. and I would prefer to deal with someone who lived by that rule. You know? The above was my disclaimer. I can’t agree to that spiritual vs religious thing. To me, if it is spiritual, it is religious; and if it is something you put before all else or most else, in your life to that sort of extent, it becomes religious. It’s that black and white. ///////////////////////////// Done with the emals. I am going to have to watch The Outlaw Josey Wales again, despite how much I would prefer not to see Sandra Locke’s buttocks! = side note = I accidentally left out the ‘l’ in ‘woud’ The spelling suggestions were such things as wood, wound, loud, and woad. I did not, see ’ would’ on the list! Weird! It was there the second time, though, when I did it on purpose so as to more accurately put down the words it did suggest. Even weirder! Anyway, I was reading some of the Hebrew Scriptures and ran into something where Jehovah told his people something that reminded me so much of what Clint Eastwood says to the Indians. Something about “As you know my word of death is true, so you know my word of life is true.” It may have been more the opposite, though. I was trying to look that up and quote it at someone, but when I looked up quotes from the movie they had what, I believe, is what he says right before that. Or, maybe it was right after. Anyway, they skipped the best part, I say! Rambling over! Get on with your life!

The 27th. / Please world if anybody can spare some water down here in sunny, dry Melbourne (Australia), it would be most welcome. / If we have a hot summer, which is, sadly, not far off, as it is almost the end of September, we could be in trouble with the water supplies. / I know we have had some rain during the last few months but not enough. / We should be on more severe water restrictions. / Six months or more of above average monthly rain and we should be right. / So we wait for the rain. / We wait for rain . . .

Help!!! I’m stranded in a desert of the metaphorical internet connectivity variety. Since moving three weeks ago today, I have had to survive on a meagre diet of basic bubble rations rather than pigging out 24/7 and indulging in my addiction. :( :( :”( Yesterday I thought we would have two experts come in and fix our internet challenges, but alas, they spent all day achieving very little. Until security is put in place, and some new equipment acquired, set up and connected, then the full rations will not be reinstated and my diet will remain in force. So when will I emerge from the other side of this desert you may ask? Well, even if you don’t I do. In fact I shout it, demanding answers and instantaneous miracles. / But I am greeted by silence. Then a muttered ‘maybe three weeks’ and ‘I’m sorry, but you’ll have to be patient.’ And my heart sinks as I console myself with another helping of rations. You will know when I have reached the land of milk and honey on the other side of this seemingly endless sandscape. I’ll be pestering you and constantly in your faces, barraging you with an accumulation of visual and hopefully written works, (although the latter may be rather angst filled!!) / That, and you will hear a huge cheer as I joyfully, fully rejoin this great community. See you more soon….she says with crossed fingers, toes, and tapping the nearst piece of wood. Oh and a few prayers thrown in for good measure! Jan : )
