After a really sunny weekend I was able to get out and take some photos. Instead of travelling far I set my sights on the garden and decided to take a lie down with the grass… the fruits of this can be seen in my artwork. I also visited Ham Wall nature reserve at Shapwick Heath near Meare. I haven’t found any amazing pictures from my set but I just enjoyed the experience of seeing quite a few thousand starlings (a million perhaps?) swirling around in all sorts of shapes. There were around 100-200 people watching so it really felt like a special event… and all for free! I’ve paid money to see different events that weren’t half as good as this. Thankyou nature.

One of the good things about driving down the Historic Route 66 is that there are so many interesting side trips. On Tuesday morning, we woke up to a warm southwestern sunrise in the beautiful Taos Valley nestled at the base of New Mexico’s Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Taos has a history that dates back to the ancestors of the Pueblo people, commonly known as the Anasai. The room blocks and pit houses in the area verify their presence since 900 A.D. AlthoughTaos has a long and colorful history, let’s jump forward to 1898 when two young artists from the East named Ernest Blumenshein and Bert Phillips came to Taos to get a broken wagon wheel fixed. Totally captivated by the beauty of the area, they stayed and were soon joined by other artists. By 1915 the Taos Society of Artists had been formed and the town of Taos was known world-wide as an artist haven. Monty and I love to search out free stuff to do first. We drove down to the 200-year-old Taos Plaza with streets that radiate outward from the town square to form the National Historic District of Taos. Stopping in one of the gift shops, we picked up the free 26-page “Walking Tour” brochure for a self-guided tour of 22 historic Taos landmarks. Starting in the heart of the plaza or town square, we visited the Kit Carson home/museum, the El Rincon Trading Post, The Couse House, Fechin House, and Old County Courthouse, to name only a few. The brochure included maps, photographs, and a written history of each of the 22 landmarks. It was a lovely day for a stroll through Taos. The sun was shining and the temperatures were in the mid 70s. Spring was in the air and the tourist rush had not started yet. I was able to photograph many of these beautiful landmarks in their natural state without dozens of people standing around. Arriving back at the Plaza around noon, we decided to have lunch at Ogilvie’s. From the 2nd floor covered balcony, we enjoyed delicious sandwiches while overlooking the downtown area. For dessert afterwards, we strolled over to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for chocolate ice cream, which we consumed in leisure sitting on a bench in the plaza square. After lunch we visited the Taos Pueblo. Located only a few miles north, the Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Interestingly, their native language – Tiwa – is unwritten, unrecorded, and will remain that way. Instead of the written word, the tribe relies solely on oral history handed down through the generations. The pueblo looks today much like it did when the conquistadors first arrived around 1540. The only exception is the addition of doors. Before the doors were added, the only entry was by ladder through an opening in the roof which also was a source of light. The buildings are made entirely of adobe, which is a mixture of earth, straw, and water, which is poured into forms and then sun-dried. There is no electricity and no running water in the sacred village. It costs $10 per person and $5 per camera to gain admission to the Taos Pueblo. You can join a group with a native tour guide or wander about the pueblo on your own. A note to all photographers, “All commercial and or professional photographers need prior approval through the tribal Governor’s Office.” All other photography is restricted to personal use. Next we will travel the scenic route to Sipapu Ski Resort (Elev 9,000+) and begin a gradual drive back east on Route 66.

  • My Plan - Escaping to the Land of the Brave

I’m going to sell up every shitty material thing I own including the house, garden flat and the meth lab, and I’m going to join a reservation some place in America amongst an ancient American Indian tribe. I’ll be a Teacher or something like that there, Clinton is in for the idea too – any other interested bubblers? Does anyone know of a Tribe that has managed to retain most of its traditional customs and practices? One that hasn’t become completely corrupt by white invasion, domination and assimilation? I have no idea what the protocol or procedures are for joining and cohabitation amongst a group of indiginous people, all I know is that I’m sick to death of white hypocrisy, beaurocracy, greed and bullshit. I’m going to do a bit of research and contact some people, if you know anyone who you can put me in touch with, please let me know, it sure beats my last little experiment where I advertised for a terrorist pen pal, which, incidentally got my ass kicked off of MySpace. when I only wanted to see how a terrorist ticked, from a journalistic perspective, and to do a photo story. Ah well, the Reservation plan seems more promising and practical, so if you can throw any info my way that might be of use, either comment here or email me at: jennifer.b.poetry@gmail.com Jennifer B / is moving / you see. Play List Of course, the first thing I need to do is Get Out Of This Loony Bin… Because it aint No Holiday… We’ve gotta get outta this place if it’s the last thing we ever do… xox

  • Coincidence of Omen?
    by JenniferB

Yesterday I spent half the morning listening to a Shrin…

Yesterday I spent half the morning listening to a Shrink telling me how I needed to ‘get out and about more’, and the other half waiting for permission to be ‘allowed’ to go out for a short walk – so I got pissed off and absconded. Coincidentally, while I was walking around the local shopping mall I came across a Central American Native Indian group of men playing music with mandolins, pipes and flutes, (Thanks Clinton for the geography lesson, I had no idea Ecuador was in Central America). Kind of like this Music It was coincidental because lately I’ve been feeling a strong pull towards the Native American culture and a yearning to live on a Reservation. / I’ve just felt like selling up all of the materialistic trappings and other millstones which weigh me down and running away to live a non-materialistic life on a Reservation some place. So it was kinda weird to stumble across the men in the photograph above, particularly as I’d left the Unit without consent and was more than likely going to pay dearly for doing so when I got back, (which in a way I have as they’re cutting back the hours I’m allowed home on leave and are scheduling me into numerous, boring, Occupational Therapy Group sessions, ugh). The music was hauntingly beautiful, all of it imitating sounds of nature like the wind, water and birds. The man on the far right of the photograph gave me a free music CD. I arrived back at the hospital only to be told how a warrant would’ve been issued for my arrest, had I arrived back later than dinner time. A helicopter was circling the perimeter of the building and I couldn’t help thinking of Krisso and our escape plan. :-) Truth is, I wont be saying a whole lot on here until the meds are sorted and things are feeling semi-okay again, I don’t have time to create any new Art and I don’t feel inspired enough to pen a poem. And Life in the unit is becoming overbearingly stifling, so I wont be talking about that much either. I think I’ll just read and appreciate what everyone else has to say for a while, until I find my Muse again. Ciao 4 Now / Jennifer B / a soon to be / escapee!!! xox

This morning I woke up to a phone call from my oldest son, Andrew, who is in the Army National Guard Reserves and currently stationed in Mississippi for his training for Kosovo. It doesn’t take long to realize how much you miss someone once you hear their voice!! Lord, how I miss him!! He is well even though he told me had fallen and received a few scratches. Nothing serious but they checked him out for fractures and then after giving him some asprin sent him back to work. That sounds like Andrew! LOL He mentioned that a hurrican almost touched down in the filed they were training but changed coarse before it did. I asked him what was with him and hurricans? The last time he was in the South (bootcamp) , Hurrican Katrin hit. I reminded him he wasn’t the Tim Man in The Wizards of Oz and so try to avoid those things. This Andrew’s first time away from home during a major holiday so please keep him in your prayer. The guys thought they could get off base for Thanksgiving but it doesn’t look like it, so he will keep himself busy…. if not just catch up on some sleep! Christmas he is heading to Michigan to see a girl friend and her family, but taking the trip with one of the Sargents who has family there. Good to know he wont be going alone.. I can see him lost in the middle of Canada! LOL At least his first Christmas away from home will be a White Christmas. Something we don’t get here in California. If anything we are lucky to get fog!!! For those of you here that are Christians, please keep Andrew in your prayers. At 21 he will always be my little boy! Lord, how I miss him!!! Happy Thanksgiving and please take this day to sit down and thank the good Lord for all you have and the people in your lives. The world around us is changing fast. David / www.paper2pencil.com

The Santa Lucia Flowers are blossoming in January. It is small flowers and they grow wild in higher colder areas of Costa Rica. The flowers of this picture measure about 7 cm (2,75 inches). People believe that they bring you good fortune in your economical life, for that they collect them and carry them dried in their purse or wallet in order to never run out of money. The flowers of this pic were given to wish me good luck and success in my professional life. I want to share this with all the redbubblers and wish many sales for the future.

First of all I want to thank everyone who is helping to make my series of Coffee Girls a huge success. Every one I have made so far is sold. So, for the rest of this year I will be making one Coffee Girl each month, named and themed for the month. I have just completed “Fiona February” and she is sold, but I am opening up deposits for the remaining 11 pieces that are coming up. Each one measures 5″x7″ and is Prismacolor pencil on cold press illustration board. If you want to reserve a Coffee Girl for a particular month, please message me. I will take a $25 deposit (through Paypal) to hold the piece for you and you will be guaranteed to own the Coffee Girl for the month of your choice. THESE ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVE and no month will be duplicated; just one piece per month. The final price for the art by itself is $125 or I will have the piece custom matted and framed with non-glare glass for a total of $175. Payments can be made during the time you are waiting for your piece to be complete, so the farther out your month is, the more time you will have to pay. Please message before you send a deposit, just to make sure the month you want is still available. Since this series has started in February, January of 2010 will be the last piece. This means March ‘09 through Jan ‘10 are available NOW. I will post updated bulletins when months are claimed. Message me NOW if you want your birthday month or some other special month reserved. • Priority to my Reed Corner pics
    by steppeland

/ early-spring-in-the-reed-corner My regular watchers may have noticed that many of the pictures I’ve been uploading in the past two weeks belong to my Reed Corner collection . And also in the coming week more of these will be uploaded. They have priority for a special reason…: All those pics are made in, or in the immediate neighbourhood of, the Reed Corner (NL. de Riethoek), a small nature reserve in Amsterdam South-East, with wooded banks, bushy area’s, wetlands and swamps – paradise for birds and small animals. / In the past year, I have spent many hours there, admiring and in awe for the wonderful nature and the many plants and animal species living there, ad trying to capture their beauty in my photographs. Now, the Amsterdam South-East city counsel has plans to start building houses at exactly this location. How sad and destructive would that be! / Local organisations have joined together in a platform, to organise action in order to protect this awesome nature reserve. / Today, May 30 2009, there will be a big manifestation on several locations in the natural areas that are threatened. By showing some of my photographs, and making them available for purchase and publications (contact me ;) ) , I hope to contribute a little bit to the awareness of the value of this beautiful place, in the midst of a very populated, urban area… Steppeland / Soft blue crane’s bill / Centering / As far as the eye reaches / Hidden Beauty

Prompted by my dismay at a proposed freeway development in Melbourne and its environmental impact. A new freeway through the south-eastern suburbs. Parts of this proposed freeway will necessitate the clearing of large chunks of three nature reserves and a nearby stand of eucalypts, one of which is an Aboriginal scar-tree. It is sad to think that in the 21st Century we still, in the name of so-called progress, clear remnant, native bushland. / I was pleased to see this article here in the National TImes.
