There is much that happens before a painting is completed, posted on my blog and loaded to my website, or various print-on-demand sites. I thought it would be helpful to my clients, those interested in my work, and to other artists to share my creative process with you. Over the next few posts, I will be giving you the step by step process of how I create my art. Part 1: The Germination Stage / (For the full article with picture, please go to www.doanart.blogspot.com) / Here you see my desk with many of the tools I use to brainstorm and come up with ideas and compositions. Many times, I already have a picture in my head of what I think I would like to create. Other times, I have no image, but an idea of a theme or a subject. In either case, I need to refine the image or develop the idea into something workable. It is rare that I can actually recreate the images in my mind to my satisfaction, so research helps to develop something more workable…. Step 2: Growing Stage After the idea or inspiration for a painting begins to take more solid form and substance in my mind, I can begin sketching and working out the composition. Here the previous research and meditation have its greatest influence as the image begins to appear on paper. For the complete entry and for images go to www.doanart.blogspot.com Thanks! / DoAn

Step 4: The Creation Stage I have done the research, come up with the image, mediated, and completed the drawing, and planning. Now I am ready to really bring the painting to life. This process is the least complicated, but often the most demanding. Before I start painting, I get the colors together that I selected from the previous stage. Then I use the tracing paper and transfer a very light tracing of the drawing on the painting surface. In this case, it is an Ampersand Clayboard Smooth board…. This was taken at the San Diego Zoo last year. I was fascinated at the fact that when the zoo worker reached for the camera the seal popped out of the water and immediately came to rest in front of her. I would imagine that this is a regular occurance.

Most of my recent pics will be beach-themed because I’m assisting in a research project of migratory shorebirds (Red Knots) on the Eastern Shore of Virginia (technically the barrier islands east of there). Most pics arent RB-quality, but are still pretty nice and ive posted them here .I’m hoping to get some nice up close bird shots (We get to capture & handle some of them, so that should be easy- right?) and a few more RB-quality shots.

Time spent putting together Bible first started when I wanted to know more about the Bible and its message. Wanting to help, and art was what I could do. Beliefs were strong and consentration was on this commission and goal, a lot was accomplished. Perhaps strayed from this somewhat, but would like to see it completed. I always wanted a gallery / museum at my home, didn’t want to use my name. Spent a life time preparing and learning, building 2 homes, family, etc. New technology changes things. There are many ideas and books to Bible. I spent time learning business, and non-profit business, copywright, etc. The lack of the proper equipment and programs has been frustrating at times. The KJV is in public domain and anyone can use it, publishing a Bible that didn’t cost a fortune was one reason I thought I had to do it myself, and believed I could, is why I accomplished as much as I have, of course, I don’t have a press. One with illustrations, that meant something to the contents inside, on the front cover that would make someone pick it up and read it, see what was inside. I know there are a lot of hurting people, that don’t know where to get help, but the Bible has a lot of life understanding for those that need it. I called a place one time wanting to find out if the Bible could be placed there, (a home for runaways, as I did once), and I was told the person had to ask for it. They probably didn’t know to ask. Perhaps some of my interest came from many life events good and bad. My grandfather Holland, was a missionary, father a strict police officer, a husband that was nice, childless having to adopt to have a family, being an Artist. / Printed out material, tital pages, ready for printers, Illustrations for major divisions of the Bible done, tital pages to each book of the Bible done, and folders, (research notes) on each book of the Bible. There are many ideas with the Bible and lots out there, but would like to see this through. I know I can do small books, but would like to do the entire Bible. Perhaps it will all work out with the Bible Museum.or bookstore which I had a calling, a lot went into making the garden which I call private Gourley Garden, Anole Habitat, since uploading images from the garden…I had to associate a name. I might ask for grants, but if my art can help other organizations too, digital media has made it more possible for me to share my work. .
A 14 year old, 265 lb. female grizzly bear waits on a tarp while researches prepare to take statistics. She was caught outside of Yellowstone Lake, sedated and tagged (#996), to assist researches with information and stats of bear populations within the park. A researcher from USGS and two Park Ranger medics were on scene to take vitals, measurements and monitor the bear for a reaction to the medication she was given to tranquilize her. It is truly a race against the clock to ensure the bear is under as little stress as possible before she is released back into the wild. She was given a temporary tracking collar that will fall off in a few months and tags were placed in both ears. The tracking and monitoring of bears such as this will assist researches in finding out more about the ursus horibilis family. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming September 2009
