i walked out to the back of my house during a heavy pouring of rain and there was this tiny, wet, shivering little creature… trying to climb the down-pipe… at first i thought it was a rat… but no a VERY young little baby ringtail possum had fallen from a palm tree where mama lives… the fragile thing saw my husband and instinctualy and unbelievably ran up his leg for comfort… like it already knew he could help! i am just waiting for the wildlife rescue lady now, holding the baby marsupial with one hand and typing with the other… praise those that put themselves on call to look after these most sacred little things of earth! they are saints!

Taken from the HeraldSun web site View the Original here A HOMELESS dog has been hailed as a hero in Chile, after being filmed rescuing an injured friend from a Santiago freeway. / The video shows an injured dog lying in the middle of a freeway after being hit by a car, while a rescue dog dodges traffic to run to its aid, Fox News reports. The rescue dog then drags the severely injured canine across lanes of traffic as cars swerve around it. Click here to watch the video. (WARNING: May be disturbing for some) The translation of the voice on the video is as follows: “These images seen from the surveillance cameras show a very common situation with our overpopulated highways. It is normal for us to see dogs run over. In the video, we can see this dog fighting for his life because he was run over by the vehicle. “What is very touching is to see the very heroic actions of this other dog who is trying to pull him to the side of the highway. We are going to keep seeing things like this until we find a solution to the dogs living on the streets.”

  • Rescuing a washed out shot

Workflow for rescuing “The Lamp” NB I am writing this for users of Photoshop – although most functions are available in Elements also … I have been asked many times for tips on giving shots a nostalgic feel, and also for advice on rescuing a ‘dud’ shot. ( I seem to get some kind of perverse pleasure from making something from a photo which is apparently useless – maybe is it symbolic!!) So, I have combined both (a ‘rescue’ technique as well as some nostalgic processing) in producing “The Lamp” and, for those who are interested, outlined some of the steps below. Please note this is NOT a traditional tutorial – the process is different for every photo, and each step allows room for personal taste and interpretation – no two people would end up with the same result! Before image After image 1. I first processed the basic shot – curves, sharpening, cropping, cloning out any extraneous bits etc (I purposely chose a jpeg for those who may not be using fancy techniques yet, and one that was definitely quite washed out. Normally I would use a RAW file, and/or some HDR). / 2. Saved it as “The Lamp – basic PS” / 3. Duplicated the background layer / 4. On the copy went to Filter/Find Edges / 5. Right clicked on the ‘find edges’ layer and blended to give it a slightly illustrative look (ie having dark edges and colours a bit desaturated) / 6. Duplicated this layer (Ctrl J if you are using a PC) / 7. Went to Filter/Other/High pass (push the slider to maximum) / 8. In this case it gave the effect I wanted without any further blending. If I didn’t like the effect, I could have right clicked on the high pass layer, and again tried some blending … if at any stage you don’t like any effect you can hit Ctrl/Alt/Z and it will take you back – one step at a time … / 9. Flattened the image. At this stage it was still a little washed out and pale… so / 10. Duplicated the layer / 11. Right clicked on the copy layer and in Blend mode, went to Multiply in the drop down menu / 12. Blended this and toggled the opacity slider till I had a realistic richer looking image / 13. Duplicated the layer again / 14. Went to Edit/Fill – 100% black / 15. Slid the opacity slider back to about 50% / 16. Used the eraser tool, quite large, with feathered edges and about 20% opacity, to wipe across the image a few times and ‘paint with light’ at an appropriate angle (tricky – needs to compliment the lighting already on the subject in the image – I am still practicing this myself) / 17. When satisfied I flattened the image and did another “Save as” (you never know – it pays to have a few variations to come back to just in case!) calling it “The Lamp – high pass multiply” / 18. From here on it is even more “trial and error”! I duplicated the layer again and did a little burning on shadowed areas, a little dodging where I felt the light should be emphasized, and with an omni light in Filters/Render, finally added a tiny bit of light to the lampshade to give the impression of a glow. I don’t necessarily look on this final image as one of my masterpieces, but do feel it is a credible attempt at rescuing what would otherwise be left “on the cutting room floor”. I hate to throw anything out, and that includes washed out photos! With thanks, and dedicated to all who have helped me along the way … :)

Wow!!! Thanks to the great moderators at the Rescued Pets Group for the feature of Homer’s great shot of our Dottie. We rescued Dottie in 2002 when we found her as a starving little pup by a river in South Carolina. It took Homer over two hours, huddled under a dock to get this sweet dog to come to him. She has been the joy of our lives ever since. Thanks so much, Mark and Dances with Cats for this honor and thanks to all our friends at Red Bubble!

Rachael from the Wildlife Rescue and Protection (WRAP) sent us more shots of the actual rescues that went on. Some are alittle graphic with the roos and unfortunately for those poor animals they had to be put down. / She is gradually sending us photos of their hard work in saving the animals in their care, and as she does send them to us, we will post. These are random images she has sent us, in no particular order. We know its been over a month since this tradegy has happened in Victoria. Rachael and the others have been very very busy trying to find homes and suitable places for the surviving. She is sending photos as she can find the time. / / / / Kudos to those who have gone out there to save these animals.

This short journal, which accompanies the picture in my portfolio, shows the other 4 photographs that I took during February 1983, of the Freight Ferry, European Gateway, which was in a collision with another ship just a few miles from the Suffolk coast, and went down with a loss of 6 lives. / Not to be confused with the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster in March 1987, which was also a Townsend Thoresen ship. Here is a link to the Harwich Lifeboat Station website, who attended the disaster on the 19th December, 1982, which I hope that you find time to read.. Always have respect for the sea, as you never know what may happen to you when you are on it. As with the main picture on my PF, these four pics were taken during a sailing trip along the coast, and we made one circuit of the stricken ferry. / The pictures show the extent of the damage, and the water being pumped from the hull, and in one of the pictures, at the stern of the ship, you can just about make out some of the salvage team on one of the vehicle decks. All pictures were in 35mm format, taken with an Olympus OM1N fitted with various lenses.

Hey there - Every few months a charity (different ones – some local – some national – all American) contacts me for donations to sell at their silent auction fund raisers. Right now it is the SPCA of the Triad in North Carolina ( http://www.triadspca.org/) . The contact person is Misty Cope at mistycope6@yahoo.com. / You can email her or call her at 336-605-0040 and inquire as to where to send any items you want to donate to the silent auction & how to get tax credit for it etc. / I typically donate 3 or 4 photographs & include a handful of business cards to both attend the print when given to the winning bidder & to put on the table at the auction for passers by to grab. You could donate a collection of 6 greeting cards, a calendar, a t-shirt – even framed prints. Whatever you feel comfortable with. It is a great opportunity to get news eyes on your art AND help abandoned & abused animals. I am quite certain that the art not necessarily be pet-themed – though the nature of the event assures a crowd that will respond to that kind of art. / OK??? Also – most of the pet groups decline journal entries so if you could help spread the word – that would be great! THANKS!!!! Christine Elise McCarthy
