  • This is an acrylic painting (6×6 inches) of a beautiful Doberman named Phoebe. She is a rescue dog that found a forever home. I just wonder what she was thinking about when her picture was taken. Like all rescue animals, Phoebe must have some incredible stories that we will never know…

  • Beachyhead Lighthouse, South Coast of England

  • “DARE TO BE DIFFERENT” makes the perfect gift for the independent individual in your life. Could that be you? The image features a photograph of a real White Raven (also known as a “Spirit Raven” by local Haida people) born in May, 2008 on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He is one of two rare white and 3 black Ravens born to 2 accepting (black) parents. The two rare birds are not albino which is what makes them so unusual. Their eyes are quite blue. All 5 siblings are getting along extremely well and all are thriving. White Ravens are very rare and hold sacred meaning for many groups and cultures throughout the World, including Native American Indian, Celtic, Norse and Wiccans. This artwork is another tribute to these remarkably intelligent and friendly birds. 50% proceeds from all sales go to the Mountainaire Avian Society in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.

  • This is the ramp at the Lizard RNLI Station, the ramp which this craft slides down when going to a rescue. I was very lucky to get this shot, as the general public are not allowed in this particular area of the station, but a bit of ‘blagging’ got me down onto the ramp. / Thanks for looking. / Hope you like it.

  • Harley was catching snowflakes on his tongue today. If you look closely, you can see some on his tongue. Harley is now eight years old. We adopted him when he was six years old. He is a golden retriever/australian sheperd mix, with some chow. When we see Harley being lighthearted like this, we can see the dog he was meant to be. Harley does have some bagged from when he was in a shelter all those years, but who cares - WE LOVE HIM for who he is, inspite of past hangups! WE WORK THROUGH BAGGAGE! This image has been a Group Avatar and Challenge winner. Also, place twice in the Top Ten in two challenges. Been featured twice also. Catching Snowflakes is featured in Happy Haven today 12/08/08. Thank you so much. Catching Snowflakes won the Tongues Challenge for Man’s Best Friend group, today 12/17/08. Catching Snowflakes placed in the top ten of the Most Heartwarming Rescue Story Challenge for the Rescued Pet group, today 12/20/08 Catching Snowflakes is featured in TPW, today 12/27/08. Thank you. Catching Snowflakes placed in the Top Ten of the Your Pets Making Silly Faces challenge. Playful Photogenic Pets group – 03/13/09 Featured in Good News Group sharing and Caring – 09/07/09

  • This is a re-work of my Scruffy picture I took of her 3 days after I found her abandoned on the “campo” scared and alone. Nikon D40 18-55mm I think she must have been thrown out at night as she is terrified of going into our back garden at night (our spotlight is broken!) and just cowers on the grass in fear and refuses to go to the toilet! Anyway whilst RB was down the other day I did a bit of playing on PSP and this was one of the images I played with!!! TEXTURE /

Workflow for rescuing “The Lamp” NB I am writing this for users of Photoshop – although most functions are available in Elements also … I have been asked many times for tips on giving shots a nostalgic feel, and also for advice on rescuing a ‘dud’ shot. ( I seem to get some kind of perverse pleasure from making something from a photo which is apparently useless – maybe is it symbolic!!) So, I have combined both (a ‘rescue’ technique as well as some nostalgic processing) in producing “The Lamp” and, for those who are interested, outlined some of the steps below. Please note this is NOT a traditional tutorial – the process is different for every photo, and each step allows room for personal taste and interpretation – no two people would end up with the same result! Before image After image 1. I first processed the basic shot – curves, sharpening, cropping, cloning out any extraneous bits etc (I purposely chose a jpeg for those who may not be using fancy techniques yet, and one that was definitely quite washed out. Normally I would use a RAW file, and/or some HDR). / 2. Saved it as “The Lamp – basic PS” / 3. Duplicated the background layer / 4. On the copy went to Filter/Find Edges / 5. Right clicked on the ‘find edges’ layer and blended to give it a slightly illustrative look (ie having dark edges and colours a bit desaturated) / 6. Duplicated this layer (Ctrl J if you are using a PC) / 7. Went to Filter/Other/High pass (push the slider to maximum) / 8. In this case it gave the effect I wanted without any further blending. If I didn’t like the effect, I could have right clicked on the high pass layer, and again tried some blending … if at any stage you don’t like any effect you can hit Ctrl/Alt/Z and it will take you back – one step at a time … / 9. Flattened the image. At this stage it was still a little washed out and pale… so / 10. Duplicated the layer / 11. Right clicked on the copy layer and in Blend mode, went to Multiply in the drop down menu / 12. Blended this and toggled the opacity slider till I had a realistic richer looking image / 13. Duplicated the layer again / 14. Went to Edit/Fill – 100% black / 15. Slid the opacity slider back to about 50% / 16. Used the eraser tool, quite large, with feathered edges and about 20% opacity, to wipe across the image a few times and ‘paint with light’ at an appropriate angle (tricky – needs to compliment the lighting already on the subject in the image – I am still practicing this myself) / 17. When satisfied I flattened the image and did another “Save as” (you never know – it pays to have a few variations to come back to just in case!) calling it “The Lamp – high pass multiply” / 18. From here on it is even more “trial and error”! I duplicated the layer again and did a little burning on shadowed areas, a little dodging where I felt the light should be emphasized, and with an omni light in Filters/Render, finally added a tiny bit of light to the lampshade to give the impression of a glow. I don’t necessarily look on this final image as one of my masterpieces, but do feel it is a credible attempt at rescuing what would otherwise be left “on the cutting room floor”. I hate to throw anything out, and that includes washed out photos! With thanks, and dedicated to all who have helped me along the way … :)

  • Wildlife Rehabbers help each other during “baby season” As a licensed mammal rehabber, I could only assist with birds under supervision of the Federally licensed people. Baby birds must be fed every 30 minutes from dawn until dusk. That doesn’t leave time for much else. I have helped feed when the numbers became unmanagable and for short periods when rehabbers needed to leave the babies with me. This baby wren was self-feeding and about ready for the flight cage. Some older birds needed to be released to make room. Thanks to the rehabbers at Eastern WIldlife Center, Greenville, NC.

  • I wanted to create a powerful and moody image, which told a dramatic story. In all my work, light plays an important part, and here it was essential for the drama inherent in the scene. I created this in Photoshop CS4 and it is a submission for a national photoshop contest. To create the scene, I merged together 5 images of seas from my own stock, and several skies . The figures in the image were created using models from unrestricted stock in the public domain. They were first copied, then traced over and painted in Photoshop, painting from dark to light. Areas of the sea and sky were also painted in this way. I have used two main textures which give a ‘painterly’ look, and the impression of age. Three colour fill layers were used to add depth and uniformity of colour to the image. The cliff, on the left hand side, is the start image for the contest. The image has been created totally in Photoshop, and all photos used (except the start image) were from my own photo stock. I hope that you like it. ! / MCN/C1URN_7XFKX_NGWVN
