A wierd contradiction happens in Africa. People are so very poor, the only clothes they can get are those given away by charity or sold for a pittance by second hand dealers. Such organisations or traders get their clothes ultimately from the charity bins you and I donate to. Therefore people living in abject poverty wear outfits with brand names emblazoned on them such as: Timberland, Nike or Ralph Lauren. The same names people in the west pay a lot for. Ironic? Yes. Amusing? Yes a little. I came across this beautiful young girl in the ruins of broken lava, homelessness and chaos. She was wearing a light blue dress and carrying a burberry hand bag. Classic. And there’s a trucker cap. / Hey, doin’ good needn’t mean you can’t be cool at the same time. This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! The Jizera Mountains (in Czech: Jizerské hory) lay on border between the Czech Republic and Poland. The major part is formed from granite, with some areas formed from basalt. The mountains got their name from the Jizera River. Nikon D300, Sigma 10 – 20 mm wide angle lens, 1/250 sec at f8, Iso 200

As with ‘Burberry girl’ looks can be deceiving. Beauty in poverty hits you between the eyes in Africa. This was taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you have seen the film ‘Blood Diamond’ then you will have a good understanding of what it’s like in D.R. Congo. The film was sadly accurate. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography

These kids are unreal. look at them! They have found a disused iron bar in amongst the lava chunks in Goma, Congo – and they have fashioned into a ‘skipping rope.’ Look at the joy on their faces. Especially the little bloke on the left. Even the girl in the wheelchair is smiling. This is the kind of happiness that takes your breath away. I shot a few of the same scene. They loved it and couldn’t wait to see themselves in the screen on my digital camera. Buy this in any form and the profits go to the Hospital they were playing at.
This woman sells shoes. She displays her wares on her head and in this instance she had stopped to talk with another ‘shoe woman.’ I loved the way she responded to my delighted laugh by having a genuine chuckle back. You don’t always see nice things in Congo. It makes the magic even more precious. CALENDAR OUT NOW. And there’s a trucker cap. / Hey, doin’ good needn’t mean you can’t be cool at the same time. Old deserted Irish Farm. Very overgrown with major decay having set in. This has an old glass plate photographic effect.
John Lennon Wall, Prague / After John Lennon’s assassination in 1980 mourners in (then) Czechoslovakia painted images of Lennon and words of love and condolence on a large inner-city wall in Prague. The communist authorities had the wall painted over. Undaunted, the fans put up new poems and art, and thus a tradition began. No longer painted over by authorities, the John Lennon wall is a massive artwork in progress, continually being painted over and over and densely layered with words of love and peace from individuals all over the world. Power to the people, right on! /
We had just been talking with some of the patients at the hospital in Goma, DR Congo. Every now and then my friend Rebecca Zachariah would dissapear. She’s a Doctor so I figured she was off to see a patient. Well she was but not just for medical reasons. Bec had bought a whole lot of stuffed toys from home. Squeezed them into her pack somehow. Then during the trip, she would nick off quietly every now and then and present a little child with a furry friend. No fanfare. She didn’t even tell me until half way through the trip. These kids hardly have any clothes and certainly have little food. In the case of this gorgeous little girl the only thing we were sure she had was polio. Well at the very least after we left she had a furry bear as well. And do you think she was going to let go of it? Not in a hurry :) This photo is the November shot in the HEAL Africa calendar. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Monotone photography

Officially the civil war has ended in Congo. Sadly, in reality, this is untrue. Militias ravage villages, raping women, abducting young men for combat, dismembering the population and creating massive displacement. Everyday. Those who make it to Goma live amongst the lava infused earth, a result of a massive eruption two years ago. Water and food are scarce, homes are built of mud or flattened food tins. These kids live and play amongst trucks half swallowed by lava.

On the second day we were in Punta Cana, a storm rolled in and eventually turned the horizon black. This was taken about an hour before but the warning of wind, rain and darkness were already present in the early afternoon.
