Oil painting on canvas (sold). “Irish Cottage” shows life in Ireland many, many years ago. I saw an old photograph of this cottage and adapted the scene as I imagined it. The woman sits outside, catching a few rays of sunshine while her husband, most likely a fisherman takes a break. A small pile of peat is stacked against the wall and the thatched roof is in need of repair. Imagination is such a wonderful tool for an artist! Driving along the quayside in Marsa, Malta, just past Bezzina’s Ship Repair Yard, I happened to spot this old Lifeboat by the side od the road. What drew me to it was not the actual boat itself but the spots of sunlight on the boat and on the rocks above it. The Caper bushes growing from crevises in the rock and hanging down added some colourful features to the scene, as did the fennel stalks pointing upwards towards the sky. On top of the boat, jutting out from the rock-face is a small niche housing a statue of the Blessed Virgin with Baby Jesus in her arms. A probable votive offering from a sailor or crew who found safety in the harbour from a violent storm or during the War.

Taken at Mevagissey harbour in Cornwall during the Summer. Two local fishermen were carrying out essential repairs to their small traditional fishing boats and I just got to thinking how little this scene has changed in generations. Mevagissey is a delightful little Cornish fishing village and though many visit it during the Summer months, the fishing industry is essentially the main industry in the village. It’s good to see so many of the fishing boats are still of the traditional smaller type that are so much more friendly to fish stocks in our local Westcountry waters. Great lighting and huge open factory with roof height windows capturing that late afternoon sun. Canon 400D 18-55 lens Three shot HDR adapted in Photomatix. The old datsun in for more repairs than its probably worth.

I guess this is one of those images for your favorite “handyman”. I saw this laid out at a Brooklyn loft while a contractor was quite involved in some improvements. This could be someones’ junk and another persons’ collectible treasure.

This is the first shot that I have posted in a while. It is also the first one I took with my new D700. It is a shot of a Train passing the current track works at Kirrawee Station. They are doubling the tracks. Theses works have been going on for a while now and I think they have also gone over budget quite substantially. Hope you enjoy the image. Cheers, Alex alexkess.com

Boys of Busia, Kenya, East Africa. They were the children of women working in a cooperative sponsored by an international NGO. Thw women made and sold cooking oil (from sesame and peanuts) and bricks for building.

Sometimes rainbows need a little maintenance. I imagine this kind of place, where bits and pieces of broken and tired rainbows would be shined and buffed and hammered back together, and put back into the sky. EXPERIMENT!!!! / Wooooohooooooo!!! My first time using the “magic wand” tool! Never even touched it before today, because it seemed too powerful…lol. So I found a book about it and jumped in. I like this. It started out as a twinkly shot of the stem of a glass (that I plan to use for something else). But for now it’s looking like the Rainbow Repair Shop! Well, it does to me. Anyway, the little Magic Wand IS very powerful. Yoweee! I plan to work more with it and learn its secrets!!!! / / / /

Last night, I heard about those 32 new planets that have been discovered. As soon as the newscaster finished giving the headline, his co-anchor/deskmate chirped: “Well, now we can move there!” I assumed she was joking. But who knows? Is that where we are, a completely disposable society? Buy a new toy, throw it out, buy another. Buy a new dress, throw it out, buy another? Use up the resources of a perfectly lovely planet, rip it to shreds, stomp on it and make it a mess…then whooooooooooosh off to another? ::sigh:: I’m wishing that we could be a little more responsible: Repair things. Renew things. Make the world better, not turn it into trash. / Anyway, this image is so many paintings and painted photoimages that I lost track at 7 layers. I think it looks like someone’s sewn a little patch on Earth. We can check out those new planets (it’s so cool that they’re “close”) but we really should be sure that the one we’re living on is in good shape, too. /
