I have always liked the colour and textures of the post box. The black metal and the red numbers has something tactile about them.

The street was crowded with people carrying bunches of flowers wrapped in newspapers. The heavy floral scent flooded across hot sidewalks and past windows shining in the sun and over cars skidding, honking, parking, simmering, stalling, wheezing, and swerving around each other to search for movement. The evidence of a holiday was apparent in the flower district. Colors bunched together in cardboard and brown paper behind glaring glass. Across the street a magnificent old office building featured Gothic ornamentation on spectacular columns. A sign in the window read “Free Rent.” / Always attracted to anything free, I stopped and headed toward it. This compulsion frequently got me into trouble. It was as if the concept that nothing is free was a challenge to prove wrong. / Nearing the sign I searched for further reference to free rent and found only a multitude of real estate office signs. I looked down at the back entrance and a face stared out at the white hot air that smelled like flowers, fast food and hot tires. The person was dressed in rags. The eyes had a vacant pulsing glassy stare that focused momentarily on my own eyes. I felt as if I had fallen into a pool. Then a shopkeeper shouted and the figure reluctantly rose and shuffled down the street away from me. So much for free rent, I thought to myself as I headed back to my car with an arm full of carnations. acrylic on paper 15”x20”
