If you ask Geraldine Summers, she will tell you the exact moment when her lump originated. On that day, a young woman arrived at her doorstep. She would not have looked out of place in school uniform, but she was wearing a micro skirt and tight, navel-baring top. ‘Geraldine?’ the girl said, tossing her long fair hair and openly taking in the older woman’s ample proportions and dowdy clothes, ‘I’m Candy Clayton? Henry’s secretary?’ Each phrase was punctuated by a rise in her voice that posed a non-existent question. ‘Henry and me, well, it’s like, we’ve been having an affair for the last six months, and, well, like, Henry’s going to move in with me? I’ve come to get his things?’ The Candy child, sweet in name, but in Geraldine’s eyes, somewhat barbed in personality, had come to pack for him. Twenty years of marriage, it seemed, was of no significance to Henry. The news, borne on a tiny poisoned arrow, was aimed at Geraldine’s heart, but it missed and lodged in her left breast. The cell in which it landed was so jolted by the invasion that the exquisite processes of gene duplication and chromosome detachment experienced a small blip. Or so Geraldine imagines. That very small interruption to cell reproduction was perpetuated in each generation that the cell spawned. The small, hard lump which Geraldine found whilst she was showering one May morning, did not disappear as she hoped it would. It continued to grow. By August, when she thought she really ought to do something about it, it was so threatening that her doctor sent her straight off for a mammogram and the radiologist sent her direct to the hospital. Within twenty-four hours, lump, breast and lymph nodes had been removed. There was no time for counselling or debate. There was no choice. The interesting thing was that the experience, though painful, was nowhere near as traumatic as Geraldine had expected. Though she briefly mourned her lost breast, she had always despised her flaccid lump of a body and was not emotionally attached to any part of it. The excision of the tumour seemed to signify the total removal of Henry from her life and memory. She felt suddenly freed of all the constraints which he had subtly applied during their marriage. All those bonds which had apparently been implied when she uttered her marriage vows, were gone. No longer did she need to be the stay-at-home wife, cooking, washing, cleaning, providing cocktails at six and satisfying connubial rights on demand. She could do anything now. On returning from hospital, she sat in the garden under the bottlebrush and watched honeyeaters darting in to drink nectar from crimson blooms. ‘I’m going to sip the nectar of life, too,’ she announced to them. ‘I just haven’t decided what it is I shall do.’ She started to write wish lists. She left pen and paper wherever she thought she might be struck by an idea. By the toilet, obviously; next to the bedside lamp; on the kitchen bench; in her knitting bag. / / Some things she was able to cross off as fast as she put them on. Trekking in Nepal was no longer an option and it was unlikely she’d be able to ride a camel across the Sahara. Both of those were too demanding of her body, but a slow trip in a minibus down the Silk Road should be possible. After that, she wanted a challenging career. A university degree shouldn’t be beyond her. Her brain was able to function well, though perhaps more slowly than in the past, in contrast to her overweight, and somewhat incapacitated body, which could not. The recurring theme which appeared on each of the little bits of paper seemed to be the furthering of her education. Geraldine enrolled for the new academic year and turned up in the lecture theatre on the first morning with several pads of writing paper, folders, pens, (red, black and blue) and three sharpened pencils. She was enthralled from the first moment, stimulated by fresh thoughts, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge that had been accumulated in the university libraries. She was, however, disappointed to see so many of the young students knowingly exuding ennui and wasting this glorious opportunity in a haze of acrid smoke in the canteen. ‘Education is wasted on the young,’ she growled, speaking to the other mature-age students in general but aiming at one in particular. He was a Canadian, ten years her junior and very good-looking, as she boasted to her friends. The new and confident Geraldine, fresh from her Asian adventures, flirted with him without embarrassment. She had begun to like her body and was no longer ashamed of it. After all, it had done the right thing by her and it was still alive. By the end of first semester she had scored not only High Distinctions, but a live-in lover as well. She had overheard the gossip about their relationship. She knew all too well what the other students thought. ‘She must be loaded,’ they said. ‘Do you think she’s a good root?’ ‘Maybe he just can’t see that well.’ She didn’t care. She waggled her eyebrows and tweaked her lips into a Mona Lisa smile. They could say what they liked, she and Jackson were very happy together. He nurtured her once dormant mind and it flourished. Time passed, scarcely noticed, much enjoyed, and she has her qualifications (a PhD in literature) and a career now. She is a university lecturer. In private she glows with pride. She thumbs her nose, metaphorically speaking, at Henry and at Cancer with a capital C. ‘I have survived you both,’ she says, ‘and I have gained strength from those encounters.’ In public she shrugs off compliments about her astonishing progress. In the opening class she introduces herself to her students. / ‘Just so you don’t have to wonder,’ she says, ‘about my strange shape. I had a breast removed through cancer. As the more astute of you will notice, I survived. The rest of my strange shape is purely due to fat. I like my food. Despite that, I have a gorgeous toy boy, to whom I am very happily married.’ She pouts and smirks like a Jane Austen heroine (she would love to have a fan over which she could flutter her eyelashes) and feeds on the giggles in the back row. ‘So, there is no need to waste your energy on speculation. Well, that’s a potted version of my story. What I want from each of you is a paragraph – no, make that two – about yourself.’ She lowers her voice an octave and raises her eyebrows, ‘That you’re not too shy to share with the rest of us.’ She beams at her disciples with all the delight of recently acquired motherhood, but there is the odd occasion when her composure is jolted – when she glimpses a fair-haired girl in a micro skirt and navel-baring top. Geraldine knows full well, however, that there’s even less chance of Candy making an appearance at university than there is of another cancer making an appearance in her body. Doctor Summers is relishing the freedom of life post-Henry.

Just throwing an idea around in here before sticking this in a forum. How do you think it would go down if artists had the ability to delete ANY comments made on their artwork at their discretion and bypassing any offical reporting procedure? A more extreme version of this is blocking particular members from commenting on any of your work in cases of say, creepy or pervy vibes. My thinking is that it would allow artists to ‘draw the line’ on the tone of comments found acceptable by the individual. Recently I got a few comments that I’d rather not have had visible to the whole wide world that were not ‘bad enough’ to report. They were more a refelection of the commenter than of my work and it would have been nice to delete them so as to encourage more of the mature and constructive comments I was also getting and really appreciating. Would allowing artists to do this create other problems? How well does it work on other sites? I’m just curious as to what other people think of this.

Here’s a simple tutorial for those wanting to turn their photographs into tee-shirts without using the background – in other words, to make your photo of a beer bottle or candle have a transparent background that will work on almost any colour of shirt. This will also help you isolate objects with transparent backgrounds to use in 3D images, or to pull into other 2D images (compilations or collages). You can download the tutorial from here (the tutorial is in pdf format): Isolating Objects with Photoshop’s Pen Tool I’m sorry but the directions are for PC users. If someone wants to send me the equivalent mac terminology I’ll be happy to add it to the tutorial. Any questions (or you just want to point out mistakes…which, like everyone else I do make, and sometimes miss), feel free to bubble me :)

Yet another under used tool in Photoshop, but extremely useful in removing colour casts from images. Eddie Tapp calls this the 90% method, which works 100% of the time, on 90% of images. The first image below is a before and after shot, the original shot on the left, and the colour cast corrected on the right. I happen to know the colour of the top my daughter was wearing in this shot and that she doesn’t have a liver condition – well, not since the transplant …. LOL just kidding. It is also a horrible shot, with fringing going on, blown highlights etc., :-) The next image is the original start image. With the next image I used a levels adjustment layer, and in the dialogue box brought the sliders in to the majority of the information in each of the individuals channels. I think you will agree that it hasn’t removed the colour cast at all and has simply darkened the image. So how can we get the image to look like the one below, with the yellow colour cast removed. First of all open your image, or nick my original image HERE to have a practice on. You are going to have your info window open, which is located with the Histogram and Navigator window or you can just go to window>info and click on it and it will open. While we will be using a levels adjustment layer to edit this image, we will be using the numbers in the info window to make our adjustments, not the numbers in the layers palette. It sounds a little complicated at first, but once you’ve done this a couple of times you will wonder why you thought it was complicated. You are also going to need your Colour Sampler Tool which you can find in the same bundle as the eyedropper tool and you will need to go up to the top toolbar and set the Sample Size to 5×5 Average. So lets check what we have so far. We have an image open, we have the info window visible, we have the colour sampler tool and we have set the sample size to 5×5 average. We’re ready to start. Take a look at the image below to get an idea. The larger image that you may want to reference is HERE You can set up to 4 points with the Colour Sampler Tool, but we are only going to be using 2 in this demonstration. You might want to reference the larger image through the link above, hold down the shift key before you click the link and it will force it to open in a new window so that you don’t have to keep flitting backwards and forwards from RB to flickr. With that image open you should be able to see where I have set the first point, simply by clicking on the image. The first point is always in relation to the white point. You can see the figures that have come up from the point that I set in Bek’s hair, they are the first numbers - R – 214 / G – 208 / B – 184 Go ahead now and select the black point by clicking in one of the dark areas in the image. You can see that I have chosen the strap on the bag, and the numbers are - R – 36 / G – 42 / B – 41 Click on the adjustments layer icon in the bottom of the layers palette and choose levels, the dialogue box will now appear. We will be using the individual channels within the layers dialogue box to make the adjustments, so use the drop down menu to locate them. Because we are going to be adjusting the lights/whites we need to locate the lightest channels, in this case it is the red channel at 214, we do not need to adjust this channel but we do need to adjust the green and blue channels. From the drop down menu select the green channel and with the white slider bring it in until the reading in the info palette is 214. Do not read the numbers from the layers dialogue box, move the slider inwards until the number in the INFO window reads 214. Repeat this with the blue channel. If you can’t get it exactly to match try using your up and down arrow keys, if you still can’t get it, one higher or lower i.e. 213/215 is acceptable. Now look at the second point you made, this is the black point, we need to look at the lowest number here rather than the highest – 0 being black. So the lowest number we have is in the red channel at 36. We need to do a similar process to what we did above, only this time we will be bringing the black slider in until the green and blue channel are at 36. Once you have done this, simply click ok on the levels dialogue box. To remove the colour sampler points from the image – with the colour sampler tool selected look in the top menu bar and you will see a ‘clear’ button, just click on this.

Hey friends. For a while I’ve known I needed to “clean house” and remove some images in my folio that weren’t really gaining me any credit in the photography realm. It is a hard thing…a very hard thing. It is strange that many (not all) of the shots that I love the most are the ones with the fewest views, but it makes house cleaning tough. Right now I’m pretty close to hitting 10,000 views. If I removed the images now, I’d have several hundred views taken off that counter. This sounds pathetic…but I kind of want to hit 10k before I remove my weak photos from the pool. You know where this is going, can you all go look at my….JUST KIDDING. :) Actually, I’m hoping you will let me know if you think any of my pictures are weaker or clearly substandard, using the rest of my gallery as the standard of course. I am aware this could glean me some dishonest views (I hate those) so I’m putting some images here for you to view and, if necessary, vote OFF THE ISLAND! :) Of course, if there’s another one you think needs to be purged, let me know on this journal. If you are really ambitious you could let me know any particular strengths or weaknesses of any specific photos here. Troublemakers, 38 views (i never intended it to be a great work of art) / Chicago Skyline, 77 views (not all that interesting I guess) / Pink Lady, 53 views (too generic? uninteresting? i love the colors though) / Transparent, 61 views (too plain? boring?) / Chimbo, 84 views (I go back and forth on this one! I like it but it’s just boring for some reason.) / Around the Corner, 123 views (this one just seems subpar for me due to the blown sky in the back) / Columns, 118 views (reeks of happy-snap-ism, is grainy, and has blown highlights) / The Dancer, 240 views (this is the hardest for me…i know it’s not even all that sharp and it’s a little grainy. i just love it, still.) / SO, what do you think? I am thinking that these, and possibly a few more, will get the boot in a few days. (I know, I am so vain that I want my 10,000 views!) -Nikki

I have been thinning out my portfolio, but I still feel that there may be a couple more that could be removed. So I would like you to tell me which 2 you think should be removed from my PF and why. My main reasons for doing this is I would like to see what it is other people look for in a picture, I get a little blinded sometimes and my main subjects are my children. I am happy to receive any reasons for removal. Look forward to hearing from you all soon

Soon after doing my last journal entry on being careful about Bid! posts I thought that maybe it would easier for everyone if I remove a bunch of non-beige shots. There has been a bit of “run-away” on the theme tightness recently and it will do us all good to get a lot tighter. We started this group knowing it wasn’t necessarily going to be easy for people to work out if a post fits the rules or not. And I’m very aware that there is a lot of subjectivity in interpreting the rules, but there it is. So, if you have an image removed from the group it will be absolutely no reflection on the quality of the image, it’s all about getting us all back on track with the group. And I will be trying to make sure I don’t just “Remove” because I don’t see an immediate nexus with the rules. I’m gunna look hard for a nexus in each case. If you are really pissed off that your image was removed because you believe you had a strong sense of it fitting the group posting rules then tell me. But don’t do that if your image is fundamentally about colourful, in an esthetic sense. Bubblemail me and vent if that works for ya.. All removals of images will be done and dusted in an hour or so. (Reluctantly mooches off with finger poised over “Remove” button.) PS: I should add I’m only going back for the last half dozen pages of work on the group.

It just seems like I’ve evolved away from many groups I had joined when I first started on redbubble. As a result of them I was becoming overwhelmed by the large number of group messages I was getting. They were becoming a chore and in the end I wouldn’t care what they said. However, I know that’s not the spirit a member of a group should have. So I’ve removed myself from groups I don’t participate in (or hope to participate in.) Forgive me if you had invited me into a group and now I’m gone. I think groups should be filled with participants not just seat fillers…. Vestque

In case you have the same issue you can download it here / tbb.dll I always recommend burning all your programs and other downloads to a DVD as they hold far more files than an ordinary CD.R . Often antivirus programs detect this file and assume it is a trojan or other virus and yes often the name has been given to such virus’s, but the Antivirus software is just as good as the operator, so always be sure to do a backup of your system and/or do a review of the files before you hit the delete key.. as some may not be virus’s at all but necessary operators for your software programs.. which could result in you having to do a fresh copy losing much of your already installed plugins etc.. grr so frustrating! So burn a copy of this and your plugins etc to disc, that way if you need it in future you will always have instant access.. learnt that the hard way.. ;) Once you download the tbb.dll file save a copy of it to the main program ie: if the program is Photoshop you will save it to the following / C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3 / run the program and wallah all fixed! / cheers Kaz / x

A simple tutorial on how to remove a background from an image placed into Photoshop. There may be an easier way I don’t know. I nutted this out this afternoon. 1.Open Photoshop and set up your T-Shirt template to look like this. Make sure it’s set to transparent background. / 2. Select File>Place>choose the image you want to put into the template. / 3. A box will appear, like this one below, click okay. / 4. Your image will appear. Double click on the image to embed it. Select the magic wand tool and click on green background (your background-hopefully you have a one colour background). Marching ants should appear (doesn’t show here) around the image and canvas. / 5. Select the erase background tool in the tool bar. The marching ants are there to protect your image from accidently being erased. / 6. Start clicking around your image to remove background. You’ll have to zoom in and out to pick up any tiny bits that may be missed. To make your eraser brush smaller use the [ on your keyboard. To make it larger click the ] . / 7. I have been following a Jounal posted by Iris Greenwell a fellow photographer and very good friend / Some of the works was removed from her Gallery here on Rb. / Iris Greenwell / I may come across a bit upset…YES I am. because if this could happen to Iris Greenwell it could happen to any of us. / Iris is in the process of closing her acoount and that is not a good thing to lose another promissing and gifted photographer from this community. / Someone Copying our work is one thing but totally removing it… Now that is a new one to me. / My question is has any one else found any thing of this sort happened now in the past? Peter
