Just last weekend I decided to pack my boys in the car (the girls had school so had to stay with my sister) and head off to my father’s place in Bellingen Northern NSW. I had never been there so didn’t know what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect paradise! There were photo opportunities around every corner, there were creeks, kingfishers, jersey cows, abandoned buildings, rainforests, eagles, bats and the list goes on and on!! I took over 500 photos in just 2 days…now I have the exciting task of sorting through them all and discovering the gems! While in Bellingen I discovered a second hand bookshop…needless to say I was lost for hours! To my delight I found 2 books on photography from the late 40s and 1 on Modern Water Colour Pigments – this book has all the pigment colours hand painted in the front of the book and then they are described in detail later on. As far as I can tell the book dates back to the early 1900s. I have decided to name all the photos taken on my trip from the list of pigment colours – it should make for some interesting names! I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I enjoyed taking them…

Well today was officially a no work day. I make myself do this every now and again. I have had a lot on my mind so decided a bit of pampering was the key and it was. Don’t worry I wasn’t catapulted off a bed, although that has happened to me before but instead I had some time to relax and think… I thought about imagery and how we create our images. Why do we create our images and what are we trying to say? It is quite a strange thing if you think of it in terms of survival and instinct- how would that have worked in caveman times. “Actually wait a second there is the perfect image- you keep our food at bay and I will just capture it. The tribe will love it for the cave walls!” So with all this in mind the reason I could really find is that we need to create a sense of connection to the world around us and that by photographing we are trying to comprehend what we are surrounded by. Maybe it is as simple as stating that we have been present and that this is evidence of our lives. So with this in mind I realised that on a deeper level photography makes you feel alive, records your life and gives you the opportunity to express who you are. Quite wonderful really and now it is available for all…. It is amazing what a massage can do for you.

As is customary for this time of year, I’m taking a little break to lie on a beach and forget what my computer looks like. I’ll be back early January with a suntan, ‘enough sleep’ and three extra kilos. Have fun, and in true worry wart style, here are the emergency numbers to stick on the fridge… Something is broken, you found it like that, honest – Help Forum / The Daily Wrap needs extra topping – Faizan / It’s nearly Christmas – Where’s my order / The forums need love and cuddles – Natalie / When in doubt – email support See you soon :) Jo

I’ve cut way down on my watchlist, way down on my groups, and I am about to cull my favorites too, I think. Because, favorites, in the long run, shouldn’t be what you loved best each day, but, what you truly want to own or can be mesmerized by or that continually make you smile – something beyond just liking. I think too many people get caught up in not wishing to offend, in favoriting because they like the person, and in making the biggest, widest splash possible. I feel myself being drawn into that, and I have no time or energy for it, and no wish. So, I shall be more like when I started here. I willl do searches for what I’m in the mood for, for what is in the groups I am staying in, I shall look at the artwork of the people who comment on my work, and who are featured by Red Bubble and I shall take the time to really look at, and enjoy the piece – instead of it being a rushing from one piece to the next, in endless duty. I shall savor the work of artists who continually WOW me with their talent. It would be nice to have time to look at each individuals pieces, all of them, and make comment, but, that’s absolutely not feasible, for the healthiest among us – and the healthiest among us is most definitely not me!
