The Pukeko, or New Zealand Swamp Hen is a member of the rail family, and is similar to other species found all over the world. It is one of the few New Zealand native birds to have flourished since the arrival of man, and can be found in almost any grassland area, especially in swampy locations. Groups will often be seen foraging for food in road-side areas. I have come to the conclusion that Pukeko are suicidal. I so often see them on the side of the road, dithering, darting backwards and forwards, looking for an opportunity to cross, only to come back later to see them squashed on the road. They seem to have no road sense at all. /

These crocs are not considered overly dangerous, unlike the saltwater croc that will, if given half a chance, have you for dinner. You still need to be alert as they can give you quite a mauling. / As the freshwater croc lives on frogs, fish and shrimp you should not drag a finger through the water if in a small boat, as they are capable of performing a swift, painful amputation of the offending finger. This adorable little Wallaby in Halls Gap was one thirsty little fellow on this hot day in January 2009. I looked down to see him drinking out of his water trough and saw the remarkable sun reflection and water ripple. I had my fingers crossed that the photo would turn out. I had my long lense on so was a little too close hence the slight blur. FEATURED in the Image Writing Group Jan 09 FEATURED in QUORN Group Jan 09. .
