This small rock pool is found in Cabbage Tree Bay, along the pathway between Manly and Shelly Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. The sculpture/statue is known as The Oceanids. This image was a 30 second exposure nearly an hour before sunrise with the pool wall and sculpture lit up by a nearby street light. This image has also won a photo of the week at photographer Steve Parish’s Photograph Australia website.

For every 10 or so times I set the alarm early and creep off out into the darkness, I get a reward of the most amazing of natural light shows. St Margarets Bay this morning was the best i’ve had the good fortune to see and suddenly the 4.a.m. alarm call seemed to be worth it. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

Equipment : Nikon D70, Nikon 18-200mm lens, no filters and processed using 5 bracketted exposures and processed in Photomatix with cleaning up in Capture NX. This is a real reflection, not a composite of any type. / Using a polarizing filter I focused ‘into’ the reflection of the jetty & sky, then in post processing I increased the contrast & colour of the reflection. I framed it so the sun is being blocked by the middle of the frame. / Shot at on the waterfront at Cleveland, Brisbane, Queensland. / f5.6, 1/30, ISO 200 with nd8 grad
The northwest point on the island of Oahu, Hawai’i is Ka’ena Point. This was photographed after some torrential rains which resulted in little creeks forming and entering the ocean. After a rare day of good weather, the jetty was busy with plenty of people. / The long exposure has helped minimise the human distraction and create the smooth water effect.
