  • Selfie from december ‘07. / I needed some inspiration for self-portraiture, then I found this… I’m motivated to try out some new ideas soon.

  • Common Redpoll (male) on a spruce branch during a moment of late sun (in his warm coat of feathers). Carduelis Flammea. Among the smallest of Alaska’s birds at between 5 and 5.5 inches in length, redpolls are sparrowlike in appearance, with red splotches or caps on their heads and small black bibs. Males also sport pinkish breasts. They can endure the extreme cold of Alaskan winters partly because of a specially adapted seed-storage system: While feeding, they stockpile some seeds in an esophageal pouch, or crop, a feature shared with other finches. Through the nights, which in winter may last 20 hours or more, redpolls eat and gradually digest the seeds stored in their pouches. The birds also have dense winter plumage they fluff for added insulation. Their core body temperature remains about 105 degrees, even when the air temperature drops as low as 58 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. So these tiny creatures can maintain a temperature 163 degrees warmer than the air. Says animal physiologist Pierre DeViche of Arizona State University, who has conducted arctic research, “Think if you could make a coat with that sort of insulative ability. It’s incredible, really.” A group of redpolls is collectively known as a “gallup” of redpolls. (from identifywhat.bird.com) Featured in Wildlife-Appeal – Thank you! • Choice II is for those who love the light side of the spectrum. It takes on such a different feeling than the much darker original, The Choice / Love should never be a choice. While man attempts to recreate his universe through science, emulating God; at the core, each of us struggles with daily choices that eclipse logic. Are choices of the heart logical or divinely inspired, impetuous or practical, or do these rather define constraints of the mind? Should the heart always win over thought process, or does one inform the other? By our divine nature, women have a choice, to follow our heart, head, will, or spirit. Wrong or right, we exercise it. • I’ve missed doing self-portraits. / Today, I took some in the attic… it was so, so hot there. But I’m happy with the photos that came out of the session. / The title explains a little what I was going for. I wanted fragility in this, imperfections, hidden overt emotions.

  • This is an old image from 2007. / It’s a self portrait taken indoors with studio lighting and then I had a stock image of a forest I composed onto the background. It was done so long ago I don’t have the information on where I got the forest stock, so I can’t credit it. But it was a moderately used texture which doesn’t dominate the piece. The hair was saturated in PS. © Jessica Walker

  • River Sprite A Sprite might be a spirit; / a River Sprite might be a river spirit. / A mermaid may be a kind of sprite. / ...Then again, what do I know? / I’m just an alien on this planet, / merrily exploring your water, earth and sky, / and languages, foreign to me, still. / —F.A. Moore, Aug 20 2009 Digital Fine Art by F.A. Moore, August 2009 FEATURES 2008-08-22 River Sprite in Digital Artists United 2009-08-21 River Sprite in Abstract Art & Digital Writing This image started as the 2nd part—the tie in, to Isa Rodriguez’ and my ongoing attempt to collaborate on an Exquisite Corpse project. The top one inch of the bottom half was what she sent me, and I created like colors, shadows, bottoms of trees, such that it was difficult to tell where her one inch left off, and my half began. Couldn’t wait to get her full image this morning so that I could snap them together in PSE. However, alas, Isa seems to have lost her file. No PNG, no PSD, nothing has turned up yet. An attempt to recreate ended up wonderful, but with all colors, trees, and shadows offset from the original. Maybe we’re not suppose to be doing corpses. :)) Or, maybe the third time will be a charm. On this piece, while waiting for the top half from Isa, I simply mirrored my “spirit” to the top half and added some blending changes to get the darker, deep-water mirror image. Then overlaid granite on the entire shebang. Looked like a sprite to me, thus the name. It’s interesting to see that in the crook of the neck of the swan (in the top, mirror image), are little birds, in what looks like an egg cracked open. Only a River Sprite could create such unexplained magic! I humbly thank you for being part of my art.
