Medium – Pencil drawing on A1 size Kent cartridge paper. Art & Design theme Extension of the Senses of Man (Woman) / Always had a passion for direct observational drawing/painting from life/nature, especially to observe and study the human figure/form/anatomy. / The skin is our largest sensory organ and requires the extension of clothing for its protection against the environmental elements. Thinly draped clothing veiled over the human form provides ample study of soft falling movements along body lines, flowing shapes & patterns etc. I wanted to explore the human form/skin/clothing outdoors in the natural environment as apposed to life models posing in a protective drawing room set-up that I had been so far exposed to. / / Process: / Stage 1) Exploring the extension of the senses by exposing the human form/skin/clothing to the natural physical elements of water, air and earth/sand at a public beach landscape and documenting this through the photographic medium. Two fellow art students modelled for me in loose light negligee clothing. Stage 2) From there I developed a B&W photographic series learning several darkroom manipulation techniques in the process. Stage 3) From the resultant photographic imagery (on the human structure, female shapes and forms, skin & cloth exposured to the natural elements of water, wind/air, earth/sand/rock in the landscape) I further explore and study the inherent structure and ‘dynamics’ of several images and produce several drawings. / / I think my two fellow art student models totally enjoyed the creative photographic documentation experience, even though they got cold, wet and buried in sand, and I, the photographer stayed dry!

I wanted to get a photograph the waterfalls in Pontneddfechan, Wales. I did some research, planned my route in the GPS and packed my kit. The chap in the waterfall centre was very helpful and was keen to tell me the proper welsh name of the waterfalls. I smiled and nodded, I still don’t have a clue to this day what he was talking about. Unfortunately I lost the map I bought and stupidly brought along my bicycle for quick access. Bad move. I had to carry my bicycle for most of the 10 miles round trip and also had to transverse a waterfall as I got stuck on the wrong side of the river and watched a load of guys in wetsuits try to walk behind the waterfalls and fail. All good fun. / This is my first attempt at taking wateralls so please be gentle. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 50mm, f/20, 2.5 sec, ISO 50. ND filter used. Dust and scratches removed in photoshop, upped the saturation by +2 This shot is also available from a photobook collection called Rural Mementos by redtree.me © Copyright 2009 David Reid – redtree.me – All rights reserved.

They are such a majestic site as they float over the ocean on their 2.5 meter wingspan. Unfortunately, 1000s are killed each year by long-line fishing.
I so should not have been where is was sitting to get this photograph of Lands End, UK. Within seconds of this shot being taken I was covered in spray and the grass became quite slippery around me. I did sit there for quite some time marveling at the power of the ocean, it was hypnotic. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 70mm, f/9, 1/640 sec, ISO 250. No filters used and hand held. A small amount of dust and scratches removed in photoshop. A contrast map and hue deference in photoshop. Photo taken from the bridge (deck 6) of our trusty little ship Polar Pioneer while crossing Drakes Passage. It was taken one handed as I held on for grim death with the other, lol. The ship was built as an ice breaker, as a result it has a much more rounded hull and NO stabilisers. During the first 24 hours of the crossing we had constant 8 meter seas coming at a 45 degree angle on the port beam. During the second 24 hours nothing much had changed except the seas had increased to 10+ meters. Made for interesting meal times. 100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of this item, will be donated to Bush Heritage Australia
