A big thanks to everyone who has jumped on board. It’s such a buzz for us to see the community evolving and so much great work on display. One of the most common requests we are getting is “what’s next?”, closely followed by “when?”. So to keep you all in the loop, here’s the inside word on what’s coming soon at RedBubble… 1) T-shirts – Design your own or buy one from the other talented folk on RedBubble. Either way, we’ll print on demand and send them out. Black and white to start with, using high quality American Apparel tees. 2) Activity Log – The overview tab in MyBubble will soon help you keep track of sales you’ve made, comments on your work, who likes your stuff, and what people on your watchlist are doing 3) Mounted Prints – Art and photos mounted on gatorboard – a top request from all you graphic artists out there. Super strong, dimensionally stable, and dent resistant. All at a nice affordable price. 4) Better Gallery – Browse more easily through the rapidly growing set of work. Check out the newest stuff, most popular, featured, maybe even wander randomly. 5) Email This Link – Making it easy for you to tell your friends about your favourite works, journal entries or RedBubble members. Beyond that, new stuff will be coming out every month or so. A few things near the top of our wishlist are postcards & greeting cards, canvas prints, and print-on-demand books. So, what do you most want to see on RedBubble? We can’t promise to build it all, but your feedback is a big part of how we decide what to build and when.

Design One Win One (and some bubble money) Ladies and gentlemen, you may have noticed that 8 brand new colours have been added to the adult range of t-shirts, and if you haven’t well, 8 brand new colours have been added to the adult range of t-shirts. Although for the moment the tees still only preview on the site in white, and you only get to preview the available colours when you have a look at the buying page, this will be improved, trust us. As a seller you get to select the colours you wish to have your design placed on during the upload process. Anyway to celebrate this monumental occasion we are holding the first in a potentially award winning line of t-shirt competitions, and to kick it off we have decided to set you a long overdue challenge and get you all to design a tee under the theme: 100% REDBUBBLE Now why would you want to do such a thing? I hear you cry, simple, we’ll give you free stuff, and everybody loves free stuff. Plus you’ll have that warm fuzzy feeling usually associated with winning things, it can also be associated with alcohol for which we take no responsibility. The winner will receive their tee printed in whatever size they request plus a voucher for $70 to be spent on t-shirts, and if we really like it, if everyone in the office starts grinning simultaneously then we may just give them some cash and use it as an official piece of Bubbleware. / Three runners up will receive their own tee in requested size. Voting will be done by the RedBubble community with comments and favourites, a comment being worth 2 points and a favourite 3, the winner will be the entry with the most points by the closing date of June 18th, we will police the problem of ghost accounts being set up as best we can but generally, like in the movies, good will prevail. To be eligible to enter you must create an account with RedBubble, which is completely free to do, and then in the ‘upload your work section’ you will find a t-shirt template you can download and make look good, before uploading into your portfolio for the visual enjoyment of everybody. However, as you’d expect, there are rules: -Only one design per user / -While it doesn’t have to contain the word ‘redbubble’, if it does it must be in the EXACT logo, which you can find on the t-shirt template download, for the darker tees you can use the logo in black, otherwise stick to the same colours. / -Every entrant must favourite and comment on at least two other entries in the competition. / -All entries must be tagged ‘100percentRB’. So show us what you’ve got, polish your mouse, uncap your markers, sharpen your pencils, or do whatever it takes to unleash the t-shirt designer within you. Good luck, onetonshadow Some small print, in exactly the same size as the other print because it’s just as important: / There can be only one main winner, and three runners up. In the case of a draw, Colin the office dachshund will have deciding vote, actually it will probably be down to page views. / We will print and send you your winning design, it will not be bought off your portfolio. / Closing date for entries will be Monday 18th June, winners will be announced on the website. / Anyone failing to keep to the rules reserves the right to feel terrible as they get disqualified. / The $70 voucher should be spent on t-shirts. / Our decision about any part of this is final.

The moment almost all of you have been waiting for, the winners, as chosen by you the RedBubble massive, are as follows: 100% Champion / THICKBLACKOUTLINE with her entry 100% Rb Tee Runners up WEBGRRL with her entry Bubblelicious / HELEN MCLEAN with her entry 100percentRb / CHERYL RIDGE with her entry Make your Mark / SJEM with his entry Choose the Redbubble You’ll notice there are four runners up and not three, this is because Sjem and Cheryl were a dead tie and Colin the office Dachshund was unable to choose between them. Congratulations to those five, and to everyone who entered, the results were fantastic, and a big shout to all of you who cast your votes and favourites.

Get paid in your home currency as above (inferred from your location, but changeable anywhere you see a price) / 3. Better zoom view for t-shirts (ooh the color, the detail) / 4. Art, Clothing and Writing So there’s good news, and bad news … Lets start with the bad – Over the last few weeks we have been working madly to break up the site into three major sections – Art, Clothing and Writing. We want to value and allow focus on each of these areas separately… Writing is ‘this’ close to being done, but it wasn’t quite right so we had to hold it back and polish it up a bit more… BUT you can look forward to a whole section of the site where written work is treated the same way as any other artwork with things like separate descriptions and excerpts etc. The good news … Art and Clothing are here – The T-Shirt previews in the galleries and zoom views acutally ‘zoom’ in on the artwork, no matter how big or small, so everyone should have a much better idea how hot some of these designs really are. And … One more thing … If you’re into T’s then you can’t miss Issue one of Stitched Comming Soon Writing, updates to ranking and some more special goodies.

Admin Dave was so excited after yesterday receiving his first black Tee he had to stop deconstructing perfectly good Mac notebooks (see chair), and we ended up with a real case of life (poorly) imitating art. We couldn’t get him to take the sunglasses off, in fact no-one has ever seen his eyes, we’re not sure if they are like the mechanical, evil red ones from the Terminator, or a lovely baby blue. Modelled here is the wonderful black version of ‘Wound-Up’ by Scott Robinson AKA Resisto . - John

There was a small peek at some of the things that go on inside the bubble the other day, and I thought it might be nice to give a broader view of what RB Central really looks like. This is a panorama composed from 6 individual images showing the heart of operations (well, other than the pub that is). Things have changed a little since this was taken (24th August), so with a little more re-decoration it may be worth posting an updated view. Some of you will notice some fresh bright coloured shirts attached to the wall awaiting a photo shoot, and also covering up the door through to where we keep the zoo. - John / /

I’m pretty sure I saw a t-shirt tutorial somewhere on RB, but enough people have been saying they don’t know how to do it that I thought I would write an in-depth tutorial using both text and screenshots to explain the process, along with how to use RedBubble’s t-shirt template. It will be written mainly for those who are inexperienced in using photoshop, or who have used photoshop (or photoshop-type programs) but who don’t understand the layers functions. To use the tutorial you will require either Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Photoshop (versions: (possible version 7 will work for this) CS, CS2 or CS3) – it doesn’t look as though you can get a free trial of Elements, but you can download a free trial of Photoshop CS3 to try, or go to the Corel website and download a copy of their Paint Shop Pro X2 or if you want to try a freeware that’s considered pretty good you go HERE and download GIMP Gimp will work for this tutorial, but the name of the tools and possibly their shapes and locations will be slightly different, so you’ll have to hunt for them. The t-shirt tutorial should be posted sometime tomorrow (Monday) on Photography Blography Properly detailed instructions are too lengthy to put in a journa entry, hence the pdf format of the tutorial – besides, for many new users illustrations of the steps make things a lot easier, and I can include those in a pdf tutorial. Download the T-shirt Tutorial PDF download link – click here for the tutorial Please feel free to contact me if you need any more help. Use bubblemail or the email link included at the end of the tutorial. G

Ever wanted to be part of a year long cotton frenzied collaboration? Of course you have, and now here is your chance. All you have to do is photograph yourself in your lovely new RedBubble tee and email it to 366tees@gmail.com where each day ThickBlackOutline will go through the submissions and pick the one that makes her laugh/cry/freak out the most and will then upload it into the 336 tee group, each and every day of 2008

So I had some time on my hands over the long weekend and I got to thinking that we could do with somewhere we can plug the awesome work of RedBubble t-shirt designers. If your work isn’t in the popular or featured tabs then it can very quickly slip into the abyss so I thought I’d start a little blog to showcase some of the fine designs on offer. It’s called bubbling under the surface and it’s an ‘unofficial redbubble t-shirt blog”. There will be a mix of old favourites and some you may have missed first time around. If there’s any designs you think we should feature then please bubblemail me – I’m looking out for the hidden gems. Let me know what you think! Nat :)

Every time I make a tee, I’m always trying to guess how the colours will come out on redbubble, often I have to go back and change the colours because once uploaded they look really awful. I’ve been trying to find some kind of colour chart or something I could use as a reference, but I didn’t find anything. So I made this crappy one. I’ll probably use this to work backwards by picking the red bubble colours then once I have something I like switching them to the “normal” colours. I might make a better one later with many more colours included…

Some exciting news for those who prefer cotton as their canvas. We’ve just launched a brand new t-shirt competition with a prize so awesome, you’ll be desperate get your ink-stained mitts on it. The lovely folks at London street wear store Demo have fallen for the charms of the talented RedBubble t-shirt designers and they’ve asked us to run another design competition. So we’ve cranked up the random theme generator and we think it’s come up with a winner. The theme is ‘Sound’. That’s right, the stuff you can hear. It’s is open to wide interpretation so you could choose to cover anything from music through to cochlear implants. Demo head honcho Christian has volunteered to put on his Simon Cowell hat and pull his strides up nice and high and he’ll be picking a winner from a shortlist chosen by the community. If you’d like the chance to get your t-shirt design in the front window of Demo then head on over here for all the details. The winning t-shirts from our last comp are just about to go into the shop. We’ll be doing a post covering all the excitement, laughter and tears of joy direct from Carnaby Street shortly. In the meantime, dig out your finest art supplies and get designing. Nat

If, like me you’re trying to improve all the time (not always succeeding :) ) and get some exposure and success sales-wise then you may want to check out the following sites for inspiration and also ways to direct people to your portfolio on RB: Competitions and other places to submit (some of which mentioned by various people in forums and journals) – in no particular order: Design by Humans – a well regarded ‘vote to print’ site – also has some good resources like ‘realistic’ templates to use for ‘model’ images. Tee invaders – A new competition site (haven’t checked it out yet) KingStrike – A slightly different concept – People buy the rights to your design for printing Threadless – No news here – everyone knows about Threadless. As I found it’s not easy to get into!! – lots of competition. It’s a community of sorts like RB, and You can add your own blog feed in your Threadless profile (so you can point it to your own blog, or your works on RB) – submission kit also has resources for ‘model’ images Shirt.w00t – another rolling competition with different challenges TeeFury – one a day – vote etc Teextile – This is brand new, and is another ‘one a day’ site. May be a good time to get something in there… Caponocca – Another competition site – $2500 for printed shirts 6 dollar shirts – Currently accepting submissions (2 colour designs) Mysoti – A fairly new POD (print on demand) site similar (in some ways) to RB, but without the community. Don’t know about the quality but the I’ve sold a couple there. Full Metal Shirt – Another competition site… Uneetee – Another US-based vote and print site Emptees – An aggregator, community and blog for your own and other’s designs Rumplo – another aggregator of other people’s designs. Unfortunately they don’t accept design suggestions from RB, but if you do a little digging you might find a way… StumbleUpon – Social bookmarking – Add your bubblesite, your blog etc – some people have reported success from this. Feedburner – Syndicate and publicise your ‘feeds’. This could be your blog, your works on RB, or pretty much anything. Feedburner allows you to get stats on the feeds, publish them elsewhere, and also create all sorts of widgets for subscribing etc. I’ve started putting the ‘stay in touch’ section in my posts to see how it goes… (might post more detail on this as it’s a bit more technical) I love your t-shirt – a sort of blog but also a place to submit designs to get seen A better tomorrow – a German design competition site Spring Leap – Another competition site (haven’t really looked yet) ModernTee – Another competition site ($250 per design) oh yeah – Zazzle and Cafepress if you want to sell mouse mats ;) FFFFound – Image bookmarking blogs that you may want to look at to find the sites yourself Competeetion – This is a great place to find out about other sites and competitions going on around the web. Hide your arms – A pretty good T blog – with the most useful post about basically every other T shirt blog. (that saves me writing the rest out under here!) TCritic – Another blog – not very frequent Fashionably geek – Clothing and accessories for the ‘well-dressed geek’ The Fresh Stock – Street wear and art TeeBurb – Tee designer community, blog – integrates with Twitter Teecraze – Nice simple syndication blog RB Tee Designers Sites / Blogs Redbubble home pages – find the historical home pages here Grandia Design – Clothing and interviews with fellow RB’ers (including ME) from the excellent Grandia Design Redbubble Twitter Twibe Bubbling under the surface – Unofficial RB Blog Diesel Laws – The mightly Diesel, now with a new full stop. Damien Mason – Web Design, Illustration, Animation and Monkeys WebGrrl – Not just T-Shirts… mtths – Such cool stuff – with success on Threadless too! JemimaLovesBigTed – JLBT on Tumblr Cathie Tranent – Cathie T on Tumblr Paul McClintock – Pauk on Tumblr Other Resources Free images – Places to find images on the web – useful for that inspiration or starting point for a design. How to find images – Another good wrap up of places to source images Typographic Posters – This is a great resource for all sorts of inspiration Smashing Magazine – A fantastic resource for design, print and web. Subscribe and get inspired on a very regular basis TypeNow – Free Fonts from A-Z. Lots of stuff for your ‘parody’ Tees :) FontSpace – 1000+ free fonts Anyone know of any more that would be of interest to RB T designers? – reply in the comments. I’ll keep adding to this when I find more… Stay in touch / / Subscribe to T-Shirt Updates / Subscribe to my T-Shirt blog | visit the blog

Over the last couple of weeks I have had direct contact from fans and friends asking me personally if I could give them any tips on starting and becoming successful in design. While I did enjoy giving them tips and links to various groups that could also help them I also realised that so many people could benefit from these tips. Before I give you my top 3 tips, remember that success is defined individually, and there is never just one way to get ‘there’. TIP 1: CONSTANT ACTIVITY / Whether you are a new designer or have been designing for years I am assuming that you would have a basic idea that constantly working at one thing will most likely get you there faster, or at least equip you with a lot of knowledge in that field. For the last 10 months I have been working on the Diesel Laws brand every single day. Some days I may only work on one design or one email to a potential client…but at least I stay involved. It’s that constant activity that inspires and pushes me further everyday. FOR YOURSELF: Try and do AT LEAST ONE of these things EVERY DAY - / +Create a new design / +Talk to people about your designs / +Create a banner, icon, logo or webpage for your designs / +Send an email with a link to your designs / +Research designing / +Learn from tutorials / +Talk to a designer TIP 2: LEARN FROM OTHERS / While this may seem like a simple tip, it is often overlooked! Nearly every day I scan the web for new tutorials, competitions, inspiration and artists to talk to. I am always amazed at the quality of work that is out there, and it quickly makes me want to design something fresh! Here are some great websites to get you started- / http://vector.tutsplus.com/ / http://abduzeedo.com/ / http://psd.tutsplus.com/ / http://colorburned.com/ / +http://redbubble.com TIP 3: BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE / The biggest tackle I had in the early days was convincing myself that I could become a great designer. Especially after seeing all those other amazing artists! But I soon realised that they were once at the start…and they too felt like it was a big task to believe what they could achieve. You can ask any of your family and friends about your artwork and you will always get a unique response. This is because their view of art is…well….THEIR view. / THE TRUTH: There will ALWAYS be SOMEONE that loves what you are doing and there will always be someone that HATES what you are doing. Learn to let go of what others think and in doing so it may relive the pressure you have on yourself. Don’t rush your way to believing in yourself, sometimes the designs will speak for themselves. You may not know this…but not everything I create goes up for sale or even for view…because sometimes no matter how hard I work on a design, it may just miss that mark I have set. Instead of getting angry – get even. Tell your unfinished designs “You may have won this round today…but tomorrow is a new beginning!”. Thanks for reading! -Diesel Laws Add Diesel Laws: /

Here are instructions for the T-Shirt. **Update / You need a transparent background – use these programs to make the transparent background. / _________ / You can use any graphics software that supports PNG files. We recommend Adobe Photoshop (which costs a bit of cash) or http://www.gimp.org/ / (which is free!) Other popular graphics programs which support the PNG format include Photoshop Elements, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Photo-Paint, Inkscape (another free one), Paint Shop Pro, Pixel image editor, Paint.NET and Xara. / _________ / I USE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENT 7 (aka-PSE-7) To make the transparent background. 1- open the image you want to make transparent. 2- by default, Elements creates a single layer for an image called Background layer. In layers palette, double-click the background layer, and change its name in the Name field to something like “Regular Layer”, then click OK. 3-Using any combination of selection tools (I used the QUICK SELECTION tool) you choose, select the part of the image that you want to be transparent. 4-Choose Edit-Delete to remove those selected parts of the image. A checkered-board pattern fills those areas, indicating they’re now transparent. 5-Choose File-Save for Web to open the Save for Web dialog. 6-Select any one of the GIF formats from the preset drop-down menu. 7-If it’s not already selected, click to select the Transparency check box. / The image in the optimized preview area will be displayed against a transparency grid pattern. There are other steps after this, but they are about putting in a color to replace what you removed. You don’t want that for your transparent background. NOW get the RB template and load you picture. / _________ 1-Go to your T-shirt section and download the RB’ template on your computer. 2-Open the template and CTRL + ALT + DEL to delete all the text on the template. 3-File and import your picture and place it on the template. Remember not to put it too high as otherwise the picture will be stuck on top of the tee. 4-Save as PNG (it should already be a PNG file). (I make mine a PNG before I start and also I make the size 2400×3200 for the template requirements) 5-Upload it on RB and you’re all set. You can click on “file” and choose “import” your image on the template. The template has the right size, but your iimage can be adjusted to the size you want. Bear in mind that it’s only vertical. / _________ / I use photoshop to put my picture in the template. / I use edit image size in photoshop and set it at the 2400×3200px, then save as PNG. / I then pull up the template, make sure it is clear and then bring up my picture. I copy and paste it to template. Sometimes you will need to use the size tool and squeeze the picture to fit in the template. Once there, size it to template space. / Save and your done, make sure it is a PNG

Yes. Something for everyone. This is my mission, should I choose to accept it. Which I do of course… I just wish I could remember to throw away these little mission deliverer devices before they blow up in my face. It hurts. Why do they have to blow up anyway? The Art/T-Shirt Club! Want your art sold? We all feel your pain but in these harder times we have to come together! So this is the best way we can do just that… / To join us in getting your art sold … You simply need to make a purchase, whether it’s a Card, T-Shirt or Wall-Art from anyone on Redbubble but after the first artist makes a purchase then all the following artists need to buy something from one of the artists who have made a purchase below! / You can also join by listing what you’ve bought in the past but for those / who haven’t bought anything please consider when you have the money to buy something from someone who has posted or buy something that they post. This way everyone will / get something sold! This is how I see it… / We shop in stores like Wal-Mart and the mall which are all run by millionaires and raise prices while under paying most of their workers. / So why always give your money to them when you can spend with the truly / creative people like on RB? You can post a comment to this but to join post something that you purchased from anyone on Redbubble but if someone’s posted already shop in their gallery and join our movement! Thanks to everyone who makes RB a great website to display and sell / on! Currently there are no purchases of someone who posted here, why not be the first? When you leave this message without favoriting it….Let the force be with you…because you’re on your own baby! :)

/ I’ve had this tee for a while now, but never put it in the Buyers Booth, I pulled the neckline and the sleeves out of shape to give it a less tailored look, very happy with the result….. lovely printing, and this has been washed stax of times…colours still perfectly fine, no fading detected whatsoever (think i’ve had this for over a year and i took this photo today) / Geisha Girl Prints / Geisha Girl Cards
