These two little babes are brand new; they hatched only one day ago. Mother Cardinal spends most of the time in the nest, keeping them warm, while Father Cardinal makes visits to the nest with grub worms and all sorts of goodies for the ravenous chicks. One of the three eggs didn’t hatch so that means more food for this healthy pair. Any sign of activity at the nest and these two pop up with bills wide open, anticipation quivering in every molecule of their tiny bodies. I’d like to dedicate this image to Kimberly Palmer who wanted a peek at these two after I mentioned they had hatched.
I think this is a juvenile female cardinal, judging from the color of the bill and from her childlike curiosity, hanging around the feeder longer than usual and looking around with intense interest and not a whole lot of nervousness as is evident in more mature birds. A beautiful trusting little girl!

Male Northern Cardinal with colorful background bokeh.
I merged two shots for this image, one of a male Northern cardinal and one of a female cardinal, and then I applied the Orton effect to give it a more dreamy effect. Just experimenting and having fun!
A female Northern cardinal lit for a split second, allowing me to take this shot. More wary than most songbirds, the cardinal is skittish and alert and difficult to photograph at close range.
I would like to dedicate this image to my husband Tommy. We have been sweethearts since we were in the eighth grade! Neither one of us dated anybody else all our lives. We will celebrate 38 years of marriage on July 3 of this year, 2009. I can’t think of a better friend, a more faithful companion, a more loving and devoted spouse than Tommy. I am blessed. Happy Valentine’s Day to my one and only Sweetheart! I think this pair of cardinals is a perfect symbol of our marriage as these wonderful little birds mate for life and are a beautiful symbol of fidelity.
This cardinal seems to be rejoicing in the Easter season. Alleluia! He is risen!
Every time I visit my mother, I come home with lots of beautiful flower photos, too many to choose just one, so I decided to put several together in this collage I’ve named, “Garden of Eden,” because that is exactly what Mama’s yard feels like! It’s a sight for the eyes and a soothing balm for the soul. The image of the cardinal sitting on the statue of Jesus is from my yard; there is a very old cardinal who loves to rest there. I think he’s got just the right idea. No better place to find peace!
I was sitting near the bluebird house, hoping for a visit from the bluebirds, when to my surprise, this gorgeous male northern cardinal stops by for a visit. He sat long enough for me to snap several shot. The northern casrdinal is the only fully red color bird with a tuft of feathers, and a conical beak.
a femal northern cardinal braves a snow storm to visit the suet feeder for a quick snack. Cardinals are jearty birds, able to withstand cold winters. It is helpful to have large pine trees nearby to afford them shelter during the coldspell, pine trees will surely sttract them,.
a male cardinal, brilliant in red, has hgis big bright eyes on the lookout for predators. Cardinals love to sit in the pine tree to check the sunflower seed feeder for safety before coming in to feed. This affords an excellent opportunity for some candid, closeup shots. I love the way the pine needles frame the cardinal, and radiate out from him.
caught this male cardinal in the shrubbery in our back yard, proudly displaying his tuft of feathers on his head. I added 8 textured layers in photoshop to enhance the background.
a brilliant male cardinal strikes a handsome pose as he sits on a snow covered branch in a pine tree. this is our first good snow fall in three years, and the cardinals always seem to flourish in the snow. the feeder area was abuzz, and the activity was brisk. /
a lovely lady cardinal, braving the snow storm, sits on a snow covered pine branch waiting for her mate to eat his fill of sunflower seeds at the feeder. /
the brilliant male cardinal, the boss of the group, enjoys a brief moment of warm sunshine as he rests on a snow covered pine branch. I love his pose, and he looks kind of dreamy, possibly thinking of spring. / /
It was getting a little late when this male cardinal came in to feed. As usual, he flew in deep in the pine tree to check out the feeder area before venturing out into the open. Along with the low light and the darkness in the pine tree, I decided to take this shot. I love the results, I love the exposure. /
A male and female cardinal sit in the cherry tree, a usual habit of cardinals. They can check the area for any signs of danger, including the man with the camera. This is actually a composite of two different photos. In photoshop, I put the female on the branch in the cherry tree, she was taken from another photo.
