Hey guys, don’t know about you but I thought today was a blast. I got to ride a ferris wheel, look at cool street art, drink red wine and take photos… oh hang on… I didn’t actually get around to the taking photos bit. But the red wine was good! :) In fact, I’m loving this whole “meet up” thing. It’s almost as addictive as surfing the RedBubble galleries… almost. And here are just a handful of group shots taken by Hien. (isn’t he just sooooo talented?)

How exciting is it to get your images delivered to the house…all printed up? VERY!! I’ve been plodding along for some years now, getting my designs photo copied, then cutting them up and sticking them onto cards. Labour intensive, but it’s always given me a kick that people want to buy them. But to see them printed up professionally has given me a new insight into my work. I’ve been thinking about biting the bullet re having them printed up for some time now….having ordered a few for myself, has helped me see them in a new light, and has made my mind up once and for all. Look out world…here I come. Thank you so much to Red Bubble for helping me out of the creative ‘doldrums’....I’ve been treading water for some time now…and with all the encouragement and these really well printed up images, I feel as though I’ve a new lease on life. / Thanks a heap to you all…people who’ve taken time to check me out and the team at Red Bubble. I can’t thank you enough.

I’m slightly sunburned and somewhat sad, for my mind is back at Lorne amongst a tribe of Red Bubblers…..and my shoes are full of sand. The prospect of a weekend away with two dozen artists, most of whom were strangers, both excited and daunted me. On the one hand, so much to write about! On the other, so many cameras to flinch from! And it was idyllic, in so many ways. Glorious weather contributed to our high spirits and pink skin, an amazing setting of A-frame bungalows set in lush greenery made me feel immediately at home, and the wonderful company made me laugh and laugh. I remember…. – Jo O’Brien working overtime to organise everything, right down to presenting us each with showbags on our arrival. And when I bragged how I’m always early, so an 8:30 start would be easy for me, a knock on the door at 8:15 showed me up – especially as we’d schlepped all over St Kilda looking for Jo’s car the night before until past midnight. IN STILETTOS. - Melissa Vowell taking a deep breath and booking a ticket from Queensland to Melbourne to share a weekend with total strangers. Two dozen of them. What a woman! Despite my tormenting her about the West Gate Bridge collapse, just as we were driving over it: both times. - Being brave and posing for my first photo outside the laughably named ‘Guns & Roses’ boutique in Anglesea (more grandma than rock & roll). - Jo’s cheerful Kelly Clarkson renditions in the car fighting for precedence with Mel’s “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts”. - Being attacked by tourist-savvy cockatoos on the balcony, planning a sumptous roast dinner with Dave Spencer around their plump little bodies. Well, one did befoul my t-shirt – he deserved roasting. - Sitting around a picnic table with rich merlot in plastic cups (marked with our names, per Jo’s instructions, thank you) and Jess’s daisy chain in my hair, devouring fat juicy wedges of haloumi and ripe warm brie, watching our group gather for the first time. This delicious getting-to-know-you stage, each putting names to faces and tentatively breaking out our cameras, pens and paper, delighted not just me. - The delight of Anne Van Alkemade’s gorgeous daughter seeing the ocean for the first time. - Singing to Big Mama Thornton in our bungalow as Mel did everyone’s hair for our night out, the blues giving way to Duran Duran as the straightening tongs warmed and the wine breathed. - All of us clattering along the streets of Lorne looking relentlessly for ‘the yellow pub’ on the corner…..which was brown. - All of us spilling onto two huge tables as Jess and I lusted after coconut ice cream and Chris W and I lusted after Drambuie…why do all my stories revolve around my taste buds?! - Mel being inspired by “The Princess Diaries” and giving us all a warm fuzzy speech about how awesome we all are…as is she. Now, a woman prepared to stand up in front of twenty photographers, most of whom had cameras lined up on the table like cutlery, is a woman to be reckoned with! - Banning all and sundry from taking photos while I was eating…never attractive. - Vanilla vodka, a ripe almost full moon, a midnight swim. - Lining our hungover bellies with greasy eggs and aromatic coffee at Arab’s the next morning, swatting the persistent flies with our menus and arguing about music. Laughing with Claudia Phares about the glory of Nashville Pussy, being amazed at Jo’s disinterest in…well….most music, and being appalled at David Spencer’s dogged determination – in the face of all the evidence – to sing the praises of that wretched sourpuss, Bob Dylan. Du wisst, dass ich Recht habe, Dave. - Watching with amusement as Bubblers sculpted sand into a mermaid tail for Jo, draped her in seaweed, and then a photographic frenzy ensued. Having not a smidge of skill in that area – up until last year my only camera was bought from K-Mart Boronia in 1988 for the grand price of $45 – I merely watched the dueling of the lenses from afar…though I’m pretty sure that John Robb won! - Taking one of Jo’s spontaneous detours on the trip home. Sitting in an empty cafe in an art gallery, I made the most of three fabulous women who’d shared my space and my stories over the weekend: Melissa Vowell, Claudia Phares and Jo O’Brien. - Feeling chills run down my spine as Mel read out my stories in the car, and feeling so honoured to read out hers. I’d never experienced that before, and it made me excited to get started on Julie’s wonderful idea of a Bubble writing group. - Watching with reluctance as Melbourne drew nearer, still shaking the sand from my hair. So…a weekend of lolling and laughter, wine and wickedness, with cameras raised and pens uncapped and such damn fun that plans for the next such adventure are already being mentioned. I take it you’re coming?

  • The Soap Bubble Episode 3 - Bubblettes Exclusive
    by Andrew Walker

I write this latest episode of the Soap Bubble from under the duvet, with one eye on the door just in case ‘they’ are out there and comin…

I write this latest episode of the Soap Bubble from under the duvet, with one eye on the door just in case ‘they’ are out there and coming to get me. Over the past 4 months of my time at Red Bubble I have undertaken a secret mission on behalf of the senior management of the Community (the men in red) to uncover the dark and seedy secrets of Red Bubble. For the average everyday visitor Red Bubble would appear to be just a very well run, state of the art, art site (Peter the cheques in the post) but it is home to ‘groups!’ secret sects who gather under the auspices of sharing in one particular genre of what they call ‘art’. I have investigated several of these sects and found that quite a few of these are benign, okay so the HDR group are practicing alchemy, the sunrise and sunset group is filled with ancient sungod worshipers from around the world and the glamour group made me blush. But this is only the tip of the iceberg, for deep in the murky recesses of Red Bubble I have found a spectre-like informal group of shysters and ne’er-do-wells that go by the name of the ‘Bubblettes’ . This spectre-like group is not just content with being part of the Red Bubble fraternity and is continually attempting to take over the Red Bubble (much like Pinky and the Brain). The shadowy members of this group are believed to have strong links to organised crime groups around the world and it is believed that they are the masterminds behind some of the recent heinous and elaborate art crimes commited on Red Bubble. / I went deep undercover to infiltrate this group and found their lair to be a speakeasy hidden behind the front of the Red Bubble soapbox forum. This den of iniquity is run by the leader of the group Melissa ‘El Presidente’ Vowell aka Da Prez , a criminal mastermind of the highest order. She rules this corner of the Bubble with an iron fist using violence and intimidation to get her way. With the aid of her gang Artemis74 ‘Vice El Presidente’ aka the Banshee , Durotriges aka Da Bird , Jo ‘No Clothes’ O’Brien aka the Enforcer aka Little Miss Mayhem , Jared ‘Baby Face’ Poole and the lovely yet deadly gangsters moll Imogene Munday aka Jared’s little love machine . / I infiltrated their inner circle after showing my allegiance through a variety of different and quiet horrible ways and having to undergo an initiation ceremony where the head members of this gang painted themselves red and ran around naked, I discovered later that the naked part was Jo ‘No Clothes’ O’Brien’s idea and the others went along with it because they didn’t want to upset her. Once accepted by the inner circle my investigation has uncovered that this shadowy group has a far more sinister motive than that of a social group, akin to the evil SMERSH network from the James Bond documentaries on the telly, this group forces other Red Bubblers to buy their products . / I needed inside information into just what the ‘Bubblettes’ plan entailed, obviously the high council were unlikely to blab, I needed to talk to other sources, I soon discovered that this group was very powerful and none of the moderators would talk to me for fear of what would happen to them, their art and their families. For weeks I had no way forward on this story until I was accosted by a shadowy figure on page two of the featured portfolio, this husky voiced shadowy figure claimed to have been a member of the ‘Bubblettes’ but left following a difference of opinion with El Prez , since then he has had to change his avatar and is living in a constant state of fear that The Enforcer will be sent after him, the name of this informant has been muddled up to avoid identification we shall call this shadowy figure ‘Mrak Grmean’. His face hidden in a continuous shadow to avoid identification he went on to explain that the ‘Bubblettes’ are planning to use collaboration as a weapon, forcing other artists to work with them to make pictures. When they have entrapped these artists in their lair, using the opportunity of taking fantastic pictures as bait, they will inject them with a concentrated drug which they call ‘Scarlett washing up liquid’ this causes an immediate addiction to Red Bubble and once addicted these artists are then forced to join the ever swelling ranks of the ‘Bubblettes’ army. Investigations into this drug have revealed that it is indeed highly addictive and is a hard habit to break. / And so as I type this latest episode I realise that we are all in danger from this subversive group, I have spoken to the Red Bubble community managers only to find that they have a glazed look about them! They dribble a little, and claim that Melissa Vowell and Jo O’Brien are good for Red Bubble! I think that I am too late and they have all been knobbled by the ‘Bubblettes’ ! Who knows who is next? It may be you! It may be me! As I sit in the dark typing this journal entry I am aware that the forces of evil will not want this known to the rest of the Red Bubble. Wait, I hear footsteps approaching my door, the shuffling pad of bare feet on the wooden floor and a whisper of wind through silk… It’s No Clothes! The Enforcer she has been sent after me and what’s worse, she’s just outside my door! Oh dear god! Please someone help me!…I cower under the duvet… the door handle Oh no it’s turning… it’s… please note that all comments are completely fictitious and intended to be humorous. The journal relates to my interpretation of the art and to stories that I make up about the artist as a bubble characters rather than focusing on the real people behind the art PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EPISODES FOLLOW ON FROM EACH OTHER IN A SOAP OPERA STYLE. WHILST EACH EPISODE SHOULD BE A STORY IN ITSELF IT IS HOPED THEY THREAD TOGETHER. THERE ARE MORE EPISODES TO READ, JUST CLICK HERE! SOAP BUBBLE

  • The Red Bubble Club concept has been set up as an alternative to Red Bubble Groups. This is not to knock Groups, but to put forth an alternative in addition to Groups here on Red Bubble. The purpose is to include 12 Red Bubble Artists and give them extra exposure for their work. The main advantage over Groups is that with Groups your work eventually becomes buried under other artist’s works after the Group increases in member size. With a Club your Avatar is always present on the front page and will always be as long as you stay a member of the Club due to the fact that no more than 12 members are allowed to join each Club. The Red Bubble Team has not endorsed, promoted, sanctioned or other wise been involved in creating ‘Clubs’. This Club concept is the brainchild Thomas Pettit. CLUB ONE IS FULL! / One day after posting this journal entry, it is full. Never imagined such a positive response!!! If you want to start your own club, I’ll design the avatar for you and tell you the basics if how I did it. A word of caution though, this would be a task for someone who is proficient at cutting, pasting, and most of all coding links! / I can help some, but can’t devote enough time to go through every step with someone new to this. If and when other Club Leaders start their Clubs and let me know about it, I’ll post a link in this journal entry. If you just want to be a member of a Club and not a Leader, check back to see what Clubs may open up. If you start a Club on your own with your own designs and rules, let me know, I’ll post a link here for those type Clubs too. OTHER CLUBS: • WildOnes / / WildOnes was started by Mundy Hackett on 5/3/08 • CircleOfLight / / CircleOfLight was started by Butchart on 5/8/08

  • The Equation
    by bchrisdesigns

I just read a very insightful journal entry...

I just read a very insightful journal entry by DanielMartin about “Writing and making things that come from the heart that maybe no body will like or things that lots of people will enjoy which is cheap and crappy but earns you more money?” I wanted to write him a comment and found that I had more to say about it than I originally thought (and I hope this is helpful to all). Thank you, Daniel, for such a thought invoking query! Here is my response: I find that writing form the heart means “being true to one’s heart” and, thus, true to one’s self. There are a lot of artists out there who create only for profit because money makes the world go round. And, sometimes, rightly so. I know and have lived through and seen the cost of “Bohemian lifestyles” and what a toll it takes on one’s life and the lives of those who care about them in order for one to be “All about the art” and live and breathe “Only art from the heart” (shoot, I am living that life right now at this moment…and it is bittersweet). I have battled with this concept as well and will admit that I have thought about just giving in and producing what will make the most money. But, I haven’t…yet. I have always just produced what I liked and hoped others would like it too. I too have felt that some pieces were unpopular and that popular pieces are those that “sell out” because the artist/author is pandering to the masses and not being true to their own voice. But, maybe some of those creatives aren’t always “selling out”; maybe, they have just figured out the formula and have solved a very simple/complex equation. Lately, I have been trying to find a certain place in my work: producing what I like and what is from the heart and, at the same time, making it what people want (and by “want”, I mean “buy”). I am slowly beginning to learn that what people want is actually to buy something from someone who believes so much so in their own work that others have no alternative but to see it as if it has come from their own hearts as well, and thus want to buy it. What people want is passion – passion for the creation process, passion for the sales process, and passion for the way the piece speaks to the world (or what it says about that world). A photo is just a photo, a poem is just a poem, a graphic is just a graphic, until someone (meaning us creatives) shapes and molds it, and gives it meaning and purpose. Every piece we produce should evoke some sort of human emotion (other than boredom). If a piece makes someone happy…or sad…or enraged…or inspired…or ready to fight for a cause…or…you get the point… Then, we have done our jobs as creatives. It is when we get no response that we have failed (this does not literally mean “no response in our comments sections”, but rather if the piece evoked no inner response from the viewer/reader). This is why it is so important for us creatives to offer constructive feedback and honest responses to our fellow creative comrades. To comment on someone’s work with “Excellent” or “Wow” or “Lovely” (you get the idea), might actually do us all more harm than good. Think about it. These words are filler words. I, myself, have been guilty of using them from time to time when in a rush. But they are just adjectives and they do nothing to show the workings of the inner self. Some of the best comments a creative can receive (and, I am sure most of you can attest to this) are those that give some insight into how the piece affected the viewer. For example, these are some comments I have received which exemplify my point. I first must say, that I appreciate ANY and ALL comments on my work, even constructive criticisms. These are not necessarily my most favorite comments (though some of them very well may be), however, I randomly selected them because I feel they illustrate my above point and are very good examples: “I love it to death!!!!” from Anne van Alkemade on Snail Mail Project – Page 1 “I love the romance of this composition” from Michael J Armijo on Faerie Dust “Just love the extreme fright one feels when looking at this image and reading the narrative.” from ltruskett on HE Waits “The stuff nightmares are made of.” from Paul Compton on No Escape “It looks so lonely!” from Sarah Moore on Little Tree ”...the thought of murdering Barry Manilow has surely occurred to others besides me hasn’t it?” from deliriousgirl on This One’s For You “I will never stop laughing. Thanks for the boost.” from MIKERUSSELL on Sitting Now, I did not mean to leave anyone out, so please do not be offended if your comment is not shown here as an example. There are just so many comments and these just popped up at me as ones that would help to make my point. If you notice, they all share a common thread: they let the creator of the piece know how their pieced affected that particular viewer. And, for an artist/writer, knowing how a piece affects another human being is worth its weight in gold. So, take this into consideration the next time you leave someone comments. I know I will try to. I am not saying to not leave the standard “Awesome” or “Excellent”, but maybe follow that up with a few words about how the piece made you feel or react. It only takes another few seconds from your busy life, but gives a world of knowledge to the person for whom you are leaving the comment. Ask yourself: How did this piece make me feel/react? Is the comment telling/showing how this piece made me feel/react? Am I leaving this particular comment because I have nothing else to say about it? Is my comment truly constructive? How will this comment help the creator of the piece? Am I being honest? Or, am I using filler to hide the fact that the piece caused an emotion in me that I think is not too positive (i.e. scared, afraid, creeped out, angry, enraged, turned off, sick to your stomach, etc.). [If this is the case, you can always send a private message to the creator of the piece letting them know how you feel. Remember, there is always a way to express a negative emotion in a positive way.] So, why did I go off on this tangent about leaving comments? Because, your simple act of leaving a comment can help that artist/writer to discover what it is about their work that makes others tick. Is their work inspirational? Does it scare the viewer? Is it shocking? Does it induce fond memories? Does it convey the original emotions/feelings the artist originally intended on delivering? How are we supposed to know these things unless we tell each other? And, most of us here are creative types, so why not use each other as tools? After all, one of the best tools of our trade is feedback. And, as artists and writers, we can take that feedback and learn to solve that ever popular equation: What we love + What they want = Art that does not fail What I mean by “art that does not fail”, is art that is both from the heart & soul and that also touches the hearts and souls of others. Creative pieces should accomplish both of those tasks. And keep in mind If a few people think a piece is boring or it evokes no inner response…choc it up to a difference in taste If A LOT of people (especially people whose opinions you highly value) think it is boring or that it evokes no inner response…try looking at your work from outside your own box and getting honest, helpful criticisms (and appreciate those criticisms, which so many of us tend NOT to do). If you’re piece evokes less-positive responses, ask yourself if that was your intent. Did you mean for the piece to scare people? Were they supposed to get grossed out, or offended, or angered? If the piece upset someone or caused them to loathe what you created. Ask yourself “why?” Because, if that was the intent of your piece…then a job well done! Re-examine your work often and update it (especially if it has had no response). First recognize how that work makes you feel/react and then ask people if it does the same for them; if not, re-examine it and try again. Ask yourself if your piece contains personal reflections that no other person, except those involved, would “get”? If so, try to re-imagine the piece so that anyone, anywhere, and at anytime can be involved with your piece and understand its meaning and relevance. Read/view other works of art and keep in mind what others are saying about those pieces. Remember, the best writers are readers; the best artists are connoisseurs. Remember that you should be the biggest fan of your work. If you don’t love it, then how can you expect others to? If you are not “moved” by it, then how are others expected to be? And, remember, we artists and writers cannot please everyone. So, don’t even try. Just please yourself…umm…that came out bad…I mean…just know that if you build it, they will come…okay, so I went from smut to cheese, but you get the point! Artists. Writers. Photographers. Illustrators. Poets. Sculpturers. Designers. Architects. Songwriters. Graphic Artists. Webmasters. Screenwriters. Painters. Chefs. Sketchers. Filmmakers. Assemblers. Decorators. Bakers. Playwrights. Crafters. Creators. And, “Smiths” of all kinds… The equation is OURS to solve. Anybody got a calculator? © Copyright Brian Jaime and bchrsidesigns, 2008. All Rights Reserved. Note: I am posting this to ALL of my groups as it is about art/writing in general and I hope all of my fellow creative comrades will be inspired by it. Cheers! ~ b.chris

Hi y’all, Last Saturday, 20 June, a bunch of us went along to The Gold Coast Group’s Red Bubble meet up of artists and photographers at Burleigh Heads. There was lots of fun and good conversation had by all, and great to catch up with everyone and/or meet for the first time… After a wine and orange I loosened up a little and wasn’t quite so petrified…. but for a while there all I could do was smile and look silly…. i do find it all rather nervewracking…. you know, coming out of my cave and all to actually connect with other human beings lol Anyway, got some great tips…. good links and a great feeling of comraderie there.. thank you everyone.. The only thing I didn’t like is having my photo taken, arrrrrgh…. but that’s what happens when you hang out with photographers…i’ve never seen so many BIG LENSES… DON’T laugh Vicki!! lol Photos of the day by Matt Mawson# / (I’m in the last row of photos, wearing b&w, see if you can pick me… and who am i talking/listening to i wonder??) The Opening Night of the Red Door Creative Galleries exhibition on Friday 24th (Sarah’s brainchild) was a resounding success. Many Redbubblers enjoyed catching up (it’s been a while)...one was even sneaky enough to catch the whole evening on time lapse photography … see here!!! It shows many familiar faces, as well as visitors from as far afield as Melbourne, Bellingin and Cootamudra … The Mayor of Hornsby opened the event with an excellent speech recognising the importance of creative activities in the area, and Alan Cadman (former Liberal Member of Mitchell for 33 years) and his wife enjoyed the art and meeting local artists. Both men privately offered their support for future events and appreciated the fact that the venture, particularly the workshops to follow, offer a healthy and rewarding hobby for young people in the area. And YES there were SALES! Among them, five out of seven of my Rust ‘n Roses series which I’d produced in miniature gold frames. A huge learning curve, and a great experience!!! / CONGRATS Sarah – and thanks to the many valient helpers.

Hiya chickens :) if any of you aussies are descended from a female convict, you may find this of some interest…. while the lights were out and the switch was tripped last night, i watched telly and saw a program on Arts Sunday ABC about this arty installation of bonnets in the form of a cross at the site of the factory where our convict women worked (in Tasmania) …. apparently one in four of us are descended from a female convict, wow. The concept was born through an artist called Christina Henri and it turns out that she also had a relative who was a female convict… They suffered very much at the hands of their captors and many were raped and had babies whilst incarcerated, the babies had to live in another room.. it is thought that the babies were probably not clothed or taken care of properly, for at least 1,100 babies died…the women were also punished for falling pregnant…. The concept came to artist Christina Henri, after she discovered some babies christening bonnets in white boxes at a Museum from the time… people from all over the world are ordering the bonnet pattern and making a bonnet……to be a part of the Roses from the Heart installation A lot of the women who have sewn the bonnets, found a real connection with the life of a particular female convict, they went on to research about her and share the information with friends and family and they then embroidered her name and flowers onto the bonnet….as a sign of respect On the show they had a ceremony in a church with a big old row boat up the front and all the ladies wore the bonnets as a sign of respect…then went forward in a beautiful procession, removing the bonnet and placing it in the boat….oh how beautiful…to honour these poor women…who had probably stolen just a morsel of bread to save themselves and loved ones from starvation, but sadly, such a small thing was considered a serious crime back then excerpt / Sew a bonnet and be part of history. 25,266 bonnets made with empathy for convict woman who endured much received so little recognition. Their economic and social contribution was enormous, yet the ‘stigma’ shrouding their existence always precluded discussion of their value.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped into the Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, the massive shiny collections of balls in the courtyard convinced me to cough up the slightly over priced entrance fee. That second one was taken by my other half and if you look close enough you can see her taking it and me taking the same shot with my Holga, which no one will see for a few more months. The infinite reflections of the spheres on each other was quite fine, bringing the clouds down to where you could touch them and making everything seem considerably more complex than it was. Like James Joyce. It wasn’t the best exhibition of his I’ve seen to be honest, and I’ve no reason to not be honest. But it’s saving grace was this hug block of red wax which almost imperceptibly slid through five galleries, shaping itself as it went. It was monstrous, and sticky, and took about an hour to do a length. It was rather oppressive, slowly filling the room and encroaching on your space. The whole ‘gallery sculpting the art’ metaphor was quite fun I thought. There was also a cannon which, every 20 minutes, fired a 50lb block of wax at the wall. Couldn’t quite work out why, but was enjoyable in the same way as watching someone open champagne. Except there was nothing to drink after wards. Probably worth it if you’re close by or have a student card. Or really love wax.
