Canon 10D / 17-40mmL Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. I had red, beige, brown and black pastels to work with for this image. I really enjoyed working with the limited palette because i could just consentrate on the form and flow of the image. The paper was from my standard A2 artists pad. Very basic with a slight egg shell grain and not bleached. One of my fav pieces. I really loved creating this. You can buy this image as t as well> /

Fochteloerveen belongs to the Society for preservation of nature monuments in the Netherlands, this is a Dutch organisation founded in 1905 that buys, protects and manages nature reserves in the Netherlands. Restoration programma of the Fochteloërveen raised bog! / At the end of the last Ice Age, about 10 000 years ago, an extensive area of peat bogs was created along what is now the Drenthe-Friesland border. For centuries, peat was used for heating on a small scale, but large-scale land clearance for agriculture between 1600 and 1900 fundamentally changed the character of the region. All that was left of this once huge peat resource was the Fochterloërveen (3 000 ha) and a few smaller cores. Even here, the peat degraded and turned into earth after the peat bog was drained for tree-planting and farming (of buckwheat varieties). The result was a monotonous expanse of Molinia grasses. Only in the highest core area was the peat still intact, complete with the vegetation associated with raised bogs. Sufficient peat moss (sphagnum) still grew here to sustain peat formation: it therefore provided a core area from which the entire Fochterloërveen raised bog could be restored. Apart from agricultural activities, this is a lonely, isolated region (the Fochterloërveen itself is surrounded by penal institutes), which in principle made the work of restoration easier. In 1965, the drainage ditches were sealed off and extraneous water was kept out. The task of restoration itself began in the 1980s, with the building of low dykes, creating isolated compartments on the bog surface. The aim was to manage the water levels in each compartment in such a way that peat moss could grow there again. Common Redpoll (male) on a spruce branch during a moment of late sun (in his warm coat of feathers). Carduelis Flammea. Among the smallest of Alaska’s birds at between 5 and 5.5 inches in length, redpolls are sparrowlike in appearance, with red splotches or caps on their heads and small black bibs. Males also sport pinkish breasts. They can endure the extreme cold of Alaskan winters partly because of a specially adapted seed-storage system: While feeding, they stockpile some seeds in an esophageal pouch, or crop, a feature shared with other finches. Through the nights, which in winter may last 20 hours or more, redpolls eat and gradually digest the seeds stored in their pouches. The birds also have dense winter plumage they fluff for added insulation. Their core body temperature remains about 105 degrees, even when the air temperature drops as low as 58 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. So these tiny creatures can maintain a temperature 163 degrees warmer than the air. Says animal physiologist Pierre DeViche of Arizona State University, who has conducted arctic research, “Think if you could make a coat with that sort of insulative ability. / Medium Size Print/Cherry Frame/Off White Matt Watercolour crayons, watercolour pencils, faber castell pencils, ink, acrylic, wax, gesso acrylic, chalk pastel, pen, charcoal on paper This began as a drawing while on holiday at an island resort, it’s one of those paintings that seemed to have a mind of it’s own, and wanted to be painted a certain way…even though I had different ideas, this is the end result. LOL I was originally going to colour her very gently with wax and soft pastels…but she became more and more vibrant as I went along. Perhaps the colouring says something of how vibrant we become when we are well rested, balanced and relaxed.

Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

/ / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /
