jL So what do you associate the skull and crossbones with? Piracy? Death? Pillaging? Well, why do you try to think happy thoughts next time, huh? Just get this shirt and spread the pirate lovin’. jL
Wow, this took me ages to finish. I wasn’t sure I would continue with this piece, but I eventually got it to a point where I liked it enough to complete it and add it to my very small T-Shirt gallery. It’s just random monsters, demons, abomination, a mannequin, chopped up toy shark, flaming skulls (come on, falming skulls…yes of course), some random toys, a Elephant head with bat wings and a somewhat of a octopus man head thing with hair coming out of his mouth….interesting and surrealistic. I especially enjoyed drawing the flourishes which is something I’ve wanted to learn how to do for a long time but again never set time aside to do. I’m sure I’ll be using them more in future pieces. Enjoy :) View Progress at: www.nicolasrix.com Details: /

The oni is a Japanese folkore character that takes on a variety of visual forms and can have just as many symbolic meanings. for example, they are used to ward away bad luck, much as gargoyles in Western tradition, and are commonly used in buildings. My design took its own direction and the oni pictured seems to have become tangled up with an octopus! Scotty /

Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 10×8 / 2009 Model: Adhara Batul One of the Greek myths I adore the most, for its incredible strength, poetry and significance, is the myth of Persephone. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of the underworld and of the Spring growth. Daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, she was abducted by Hades and taken to the land of the dead. By a determination of the Fates, she was forced to stay for two seasons each year after eating pomegranates seeds, thus becoming consort of Hades and queen of the underworld. This time I opted by depicting her sorrow and solitude after having the seeds, although there’s quite an air of resignation with her destiny.
There is or will be a challenge through the ALT group for fairytales…I had always wanted to do a fairy god mother sort of piece. Took 3 days to finish…first all the sketchy goodness, then the black outling…lastly the colour. 9×12 / Inks.
Watercolor, gouache and pencil on board / 9×14 / 2009 Model: Kambriel To decipher woman’s mystery of Death-Life – who would dare to do it? / That magic of being a veil between two worlds / To bring the light of consciousness from the depths of a sea of universal memories and shadows… / Who would dare to do it, without fear?
This is the final in my L’Oiseau series – although I am not quite sure about this yet. It feels as if there’s on more lying in wait…. So you’ll have to watch this space. It refers to the following lines: ‘The eyes are not here / There are no eyes here / In this valley of dying stars / In this hollow valley / This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms.’ of T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Hollow Men’ and was inspired by it. There are three more images in the series (so far): The first in the series is Panier-Avec-L’Oiseau. / The second in the series is Tête-à-Tête. / The third in the series is Métamorphose. A brief explanation might be in order: / - the cage is actually half seed pod (not a peanut!!!) / - the flowers are poppies, which are used in rememberance of the fallen soldiers here in the UK / - at the back you can faintly see a feather pattern I created specifically for this image / - the sky/clouds is a photograph which I’ve used as a texture / - the leaves framing all the pictures are photographs that I’ve edited and arranged to frame the image. 101 views to date.
