I’m taking photos of people with their favourite item of clothing and asking them about it. Tell me about your red boots. / These boots are made by Alannah Hill (who is not particularly one of my favourite designers but I fell in love with these boots at first sight!) I think they are just perfect! I love the colour, the brooch and the red ribbons. They are just so me! Unfortunately they are not the easiest heel to walk in so I don’t get to wear them too much, and I like to save them for special occasions so they have a bigger impact on the people who see / them! What’s the story behind you getting them? / Like all of my shoes, they were an impulse buy. I just can’t help but whip out my credit card when I see new shoes! My friend was working at the store where I purchased them at the time so I got them a little cheaper which helped sweeten the deal! So, why exactly do you love shoes so much? / I need one in every colour to go with my outfits, every style for different comfort levels, moods and seasons. Shoes to go with stockings and classic vintage heels that every girl must own! I can’t part with shoes, they have to be broken beyond repair or stolen from me. As you travel further into the town of Chloride, you will see a wonderful old rusty crusty, falling to bits truck on your right, the photographers dream. It still has a load of hay on it and sports a picturesque delight for your camera. Stop and take a picture for your collection before you travel down the road into the heart of town. Look for more old vehicles, tractors and mining equipment during your visit. You will not be disappointed. Annual Car Show / On the second Saturday in October, some of the nation’s finest automobiles travel to Chloride for the Annual Car Show. Spectators line the streets to watch these magnificent machines slowly travel the streets of town. Trophies and other prizes are awarded to winners in several categories. Food vendors, jewelry vendors, antique vendors, and junk dealers add to the gala affair sponsored by Shep’s Miner’s Inn. Also included in the mix of festivities is a mock gunfight scheduled at high noon. Desert USA Many movies and commercials have been filmed in and around Chloride through the years. Entertainment can be found 5 nights a week including 2 gunfight reenactment troupes. More about this later. This is the third of a series about the mining town of Chloride, Arizona. American mountain lion, aka cougar aka puma. Taken at the Dickinson Park Zoo. / / “Puma concolor: / The Latin name for the cat of many names Cougar. Catamount. Painter. Panther. Ghost cat. Puma. Mountain lion. In speaking of the many names of cougar, one folktale tells the story of Native Americans who would bring pelts to trade in what is now New York City. When the Europeans and white settlers would question why all only skins of females (given the lack of manes) were brought for trade, the Native Americans explained that the males lived far away in the mountains, playing a joke of sorts on the naïve newcomers—this is why cougars, who are not specific to mountain regions at all, came to be known as “mountain lions”. The etymological history of the word cougar comes from French naturalist-explorer Count Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon, who called Puma concolor “cuougar”. This usage was derived from the Brazilian Portugese word cuguacuarana, which in turn came from the Tupi Indian word susuarana, which means “false deer”. We find that this word aptly captures the international allure and cross-cultural nature of the species, while distinguishing our organization from a popular brand of athletic shoes—Puma. Erie as in Erie Canal, Erie Street and Erie Boulevard were named after Lake Erie which in turn was named after the Indian people who lived along the lake’s southern shore, an area where cougars were abundant. The cougars there were called Erielhonan, meaning “long tail” and the Native Americans living there were called Erie or Cat Nation. In 1600, some 14,000 Eries lived in villages between what is now Buffalo, NY and Sandusky, Ohio. In 1656, the Erie were almost exterminated by the Iroquois League. The surviving captives were either adopted or enslaved. Symbolism, Lore and Native American Experience with Cougar “Ghostwalker” The spirit of the Cougar chose to take the earth and walk as a spiritual hunter, to teach unconditional leadership, patience and determination. “The strengths they represent have a powerful lesson for those that are willing to learn from them” -Nancy Wood Taber, artist According to animal totem lore, cougar is the energy of leadership. If we listen to Cougar we learn to become the leader that people follow by choice, not by force. Cougar has the wisdom to lead through love, not through fear. Cougar is a take-charge totem or energy. Cougar people are such natural leaders that others tend to take their leadership for granted. If no one else is leading, cougar will naturally take over. Cougar is graceful and balances intention, strength and responsibility. Others are always safe when cougar is in charge. The cougar is very elusive and is rarely encountered in the wild. Because of this quality, cougar can appear without being noticed and quietly take control of a situation. Sometimes this can lead to conflict with others over territory. It is often noted as an animal that is independent, shy and withdrawn. The same characteristics are often found in people with this medicine. Cougar is associated with leadership and teaches decisiveness in the use of personal power. When it attacks it does not hesitate. When threatened it goes for the most vulnerable place. Cougar is not often allowed to show vulnerability. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem. Cougar people are often very sure of themselves, not taking any unnecessary steps or exerting any extra energy beyond what is required of them to achieve their goal. Most cougars learn by trial and error, which strengthens them and hones their skills. In life, cougar people may find that others will not like these assertions. Cougar people mustn’t allow others to keep them stationary—cougar people stretch their muscles and show their capabilities. Those with the cougar medicine are often attacked by others, especially by those who have grown comfortable with the status quo and do not wish to see those who have this totem grow. Even still, they may never admit when a cougar person does grow. A cougar will leap at opportunities. Its all in the title. A field of Poppy’s not far from my parents home. Easily seen from my old bedroom. I discovered the field a bit late in terms of the poppy’s they had passed their best by the time I got to them. It still looks ok though. Many thanks for viewing. / Camera settings, what are they. Only joking, I don’t keep notes, I tend to shoot in aperture priority most often on a tripod at f22 but when I forget the tripod (almost always) It depends on the light. This was around f10 i think. / / / /

One in a series of four images. / Now available here at Red Bubble as a print. / Original: Oil on Canvas. / Size of original painting: 4 ft X 3 ft / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - / / “A big part of the Red Dust Girl series was about trying to convey a sense of living in a regional area or a situation far from the influence of a metropolitan city. I wanted it to reflect a celebration of outback Australia, of the people living there each day of their lives and of the purity or innocence that can be found in such a seemingly baron and harsh landscape. / / Painting can sometimes be a very individual pursuit or in my case an infatuation, so I also wanted that series to express the joy (of all things) of being alone or separated, and of the contentment in that individualism. How “change” presented here as a metaphor (the seasons) can be a good thing and doesn’t necessarily need to change us as individuals. / / I knew that having a young girl or woman in the picture would be the perfect vehicle to present this idea. I’m not sure how the “floating” concept came about but I had previously painted a picture of a girl floating over the landscape and really liked the whole idea of the shadow beneath the feet etc. It certainly fitted the context of “separation” and when I mapped it out initially it just looked right. I decided that nothing in each of the four paintings would touch the ground, that the earth beneath her feet would remain unchanged through the seasons. “ - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - - - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – / THE “RED DUST GIRL” SERIES Review by Karl James At first glance, Leith O’Malley’s “Red Dust Girl” series invokes his love of contemporary illustration with its simplicity of design and striking power to just jump at the viewer. These large oil on canvas works are figuratively simple in composition but make no mistake, the paint work is delicious with luscious textures, tactile surfaces and collaged with natures discards. One wants to reach out and feel the very canvas. Full of outback hues, rich magentas, cobalt skies and desert ochre applied in buttery layers, these paintings have an underlying Australianess about them as the title of the series suggests. They also follow the seasons. Summer with its blazing, sizzling outback.. a sort of piercing Vincent heat, invigorating and maddening. Then there are the feather-like leaves of Autumn, falling about her and nesting at her feet. Thick and pillow soft, a season of calm reflection. Winter rain. Cleansing, ultramarine and diamonds, a cool tonic for the red raw earth. Finally Spring. All petals and newness, the simple joys of life, rebirth. A warm caress and motherly wonder. But who is the girl, this doll like puppet? Zen like in her calm yet so poetic and mysterious? Leith often incorporates metaphor in his work. Is she real or fictional? Or could it be “Eratos”, the artists muse guiding the creative spirit. Nothing is certain, but maybe we really see the artist here with his thoughts floating as visions do, bound not by the earth. Maybe he is like many of us, wary of change yet accepting of it. Of this new work Leith says “part of it is a reaction to living far from the city in a regional area. There is an underlying celebration of solitude and adaptation to my surroundings. That no matter what seasons bring we remain unchanged, and that isolation should be embraced. I believe in my own case it really is a stimulus for creativity”. If one looks beyond this little red dust girl of ponytail innocence and into those piercing cornflower eyes there is a knowing, an accepting. She hovers above the ground not at one with nature but unfazed by the seasons change, and like the hand that holds the brush, she adapts. More information here -

After you pass the bank you will see the Old Red House on your left. Many of the people in Chloride sell handmade jewelry, antiques, and just plain junk. Who knows what treasure you will find in this yard or behind those doors. Only by opening the door will you find the answer. Chloride-Arizona is a very scarcely-populated town, but 20,000 tourists around the world come every year, stopping at the Visitor Center in the Mine Shaft Market, where shop owners sell jewelry and antiques. Local Chloride Attractions In Chloride / The town itself, the old bank, old train station, jail, Cyanide Springs, murals, mines, and mine shafts. There are lots of trails for hiking, biking, off road riding, and horseback riding. Above the town are two BLM campgrounds: Windy Point and Packsaddle. From this vantage point a person can see land in four different states: Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. The view is absolutely spectacular. All Town Yard Sale / Citizens of Chloride and the surrounding community hold an all town yard sale the first Saturday in May and October. Lots of bargains on antiques and general junk are available. The Historical Society of Chloride traditionally holds a bake sale and includes some of the finest pastries ever eaten by human beings. The Wu Shan Fairy Series Red Cranes on river ice, original art work by Zhao, Ze. The Wu Shen Fairy Series is based on a famous Chinese legend about Wu Shan (Wu Mountain), located at the traditional eastern border of China’s Sichuan Provence on the Yangtze river. This area is popularly known today as the “Three Georges” and is the site of the world’s largest dam for flood control and power generation. As with many legends and fables a number of variations exist. Only a brief summary of the fairy story is described here. Since humans dwelled in China rivers and floods carved history into the mountains, shaped the lives of humans and affected the course of human events. Farmers need rivers to nourish their crops for bountiful yields but nature also wrecks havoc with floods. The struggle with the river that ancient Chinese faced continues in the modern era with the new Three Gorges Dam as the world’s largest construction project. The Chinese poet Lu You also wrote about this area and its fairy stories. / In this context, thousands of years ago the Queen of the West sent her beautiful young daughter Wao Ji and 11 hand maidens to watch over the Jade Pool. These 12 fairies are symbolized by the 12 peaks of the gorge. The lovely Wao Ji wandered and lived among the animals. Eventually she settled in the magnificent beauty of Wu Shan. She observed the suffering of humans caused by the river floods and took pity. Ultimately, she had a rendezvous with Prince Chu and gave him a book describing how to control the river and its floods. / There are many additional details to this epoch not retold here. You can search under “Three Gorges History”, “Wu Shan Mountain” or “Wu Shan Fairy” for the rest of the story. The paintings are the artist’s image of the beautiful fairy goddess and her surroundings.

My work is featured in the group Painters In Modern Times / (Thanks Everyone at PIMT!) Oil on Glass This is the print version of my painting This is the newest addition to my series “Journey Through Africa”, the other three included a Red Bishop bird, an African tree in a field and a giraffe in it’s habitat. This piece is of one of my favorite creatures, the blue poison dart frog. They are found in Africa and South America and were not discovered till around 1960’s. It’s stunning natural colors really attracted me to it in creating this work. This piece like the other two in the series was also painted on an antique mirror. I take something old and forgotten and create something new, yet try to keep the aged or classic feel throughout the piece. Usually just looking at a prospective mirror I see what I will paint next in it.
