  • This is a picture from my day job. The red balls are grass pollen, and the tubes from them are growing down into the flower to fertilise the ovary. To get ready for the photo took some serious effort to get the timing right, then use of chemicals to stain the pollen red, then actually get to the microscope to take the photo. After reading in the forums about the paths people have taken to become artists, and thinking of my desire to be one (as in, to be able to spend all my time on creative pursuits), I began to think about what skills I have already from my current path. My challenge was to find a creative application of those skills, because I’m not in a position to give up work. Yet :) I’ve been using photography to record my work for many years, so that was the first and most obvious answer. I just thought I’d throw that up for interest, as it’s not the sort of thing that you would want framed in your living room I’m sure LOL!

  • This started off life as an Acrylic painting which I photographed & played around with. As I painted the original I think I’m allowed to do that. Its meant to represent life at the stage where the earth is still a molten mass of well cosmic dust. Its also how I feel about the internal struggle in my head. /

  • No post-processing, just got lucky with a laser pointer.

  • I still watch her video as it reminds me who I really am.. Here is a bit about this amazing Doctor/woman and her website below. / / Jill Bolte Taylor: Neuroanatomist Brain researcher Jill Bolte Taylor studied her own stroke as it happened—and has become a powerful voice for brain recovery. / Why you should listen to her: One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor’s brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness … Amazed to find herself alive, Taylor spent eight years recovering her ability to think, walk and talk. She has become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of coming back from brain injury stronger than before. In her case, although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy from her right. From her home base in Indiana, she now travels the country on behalf of the Harvard Brain Bank as the “Singin’ Scientist.” “How many brain scientists have been able to study the brain from the inside out? I’ve gotten as much out of this experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career.” Jill Bolte Taylor

  • Just finished coloring my latest piece (although I actually sketched this about 5 years ago on a city bus on the way home from art school), and it’s looking pretty good. My original thought on this as I drew it was that this guy needed a big frickin’ gun. No, wait.. a HUGE frickin’ gun! The kind that would, in no way, be able to be supported by his weight alone. In fact, the gun-to-guy weight ratio balance would be off so badly that he would be lying on his back in about a second. But, this isn’t real life, and nothing even says this is an illustration of anything from our universe so maybe he’s on another planet or something. Yeah, that’s it.. Overall, I’m happy with the way this turned out. I originally didn’t plan on adding in the smoke or spark effects, but I thought it needed something more so I started playing around with smoke and that eventually led to a much larger idea: the character seems to be literally ripping apart or on the verge of exploding. Very cool. I’m working on improving my coloring speed and overall composition, so hopefully you’ll enjoy this latest addition to my illustration/print portfolio.

  • The famous M42. A must see of the winter sky.

  • The original Rocket Adventure image created for the Rocket themed, Space 2008 and Beyond challenge. The resources for it were used to produce this image. Good luck to the men, women and children on their way to some distant place of wonder and adventure. I just hope it works out for them! Might be a place with giant green trees and purple fog and lots of yummy fungus to live on. With little chirpy things that shut up at night. Oh yea and look cute and taste great roasted on a spit. Hmm they might have taken some chickens with them; who knows. Note for the Vector Goodness Lounge Rules. No rastorize effects used in this work. All vector line work and vector effects (styles).

  • Our Sun, in all its fiery glory.

  • With the global economy caught in the gravity of the financial crisis, it’s sad that programs like the Constellation Project will have a long wait before anything truly gets off the ground. / / NASA’s Constellation Project is set up to finish the International Space Station, retire the Shuttle Fleet and build a whole new fleet of space vehicles which will take us back to the Moon, then Mars and then the places beyond. / / But with Congressional limitations and funding cutbacks due to the financial crisis, as well as being stuck with a complicated and restrictive “go as you pay” finance structure it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing any groundbreaking manned space flights in the naughties. / / This image represents a fleeting memory of a childhood dream to see man explore our planets and then the stars beyond and it’s one of the few things as a child I looked up to America for. / / The universe is a big place and we’re yet to make it out of our solar system but without programs like the Constellation Project, man may never ever get to make another giant leap. / / DETAIL / / / /
