Click Here / Upper Antelope Canyon – USA Tour 2008 The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse’ bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks.” Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet in elevation and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the stream bed. Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone grain by grain, that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. Wind has also played a role in sculpting this fantastic canyon. autumn colors in the forest
-
Remains of autumn’s splendor with a babbling mountain stream in the background. This has been digitally rendered to resemble a watercolor but effects aren’t that noticeable at smaller sizes. This stream is found in the Tremont Area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park
-
To catch the sun rising over the mountain requires a 3AM wakeup call 2 hour drive and a short 1 mile hike to waters edge. In my book worth it! Dawn illuminates the cloud-capped peak of Mt. Rainier as it reflects in the the still waters of Bench Lake

Many trials I overcame / There I remained just the same / Through drought, wind, rain, and hail / I hung there and did not fail The suns face, less I did see / As I hung there on the tree / My beauty then I did show / But struggled not to let go A strong north wind came that day / Force so great I could not stay / On a rock I hang on still / Though the air is starting to chill I hang on for you to see / This is what matters to me / If to you, joy I did bring / It will cause my heart to sing Image made on Porters Creek,Greenbrier section of the Great Smoky Mountain NP ©2008 Gary L. Arrggghhh….I’m going to miss you all so much! Leaving tomorrow for a second honeymoon in NZ….not going to be much time for the bub, so I’ll just have to say hooroo and will catch up with you all when I return. Gotta go pack – cameras, lenses, tripod, cable release, lee filters, batteries, battery chargers, power leads, extension cord, powerboard….these are all essential, of course. Clothing and toiletries are optional extras… Take care all you lovely people, I’ll log in if I can, but it’s not going to happen often, I suspect.

Took a drive out to a little desert community last weekend. Checked out the little town of Searchlight. Found this old gold mine visible from Highway 95. Searchlight has a most interesting and intriguing history that includes many famous names: Clara Bow, Rex Bell, Edith Head, Louis Meyer, LT William Nellis, U.S. Senator Harry Reid, John Macready, James Cashman, and an endless list of colorful and fascinating characters that are fodder for the legends of the old west. Scott Joplin, who never lived in Searchlight, was so intrigued by the stories of his composer friend, Tom Turpin – who had spent time in Searchlight in his youth – that he composed the Searchlight Rag. Initial discoveries of predominately gold ore were first made at this location on May 6, 1897. G. F. Colton filed the first claim, later to become the Duplex Mine. This historic and picturesque mining town sits just fourteen miles up the hill from beautiful Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave. Tell the truth … did you know there was a breathtaking, clear lake out in the middle of the desert between Las Vegas and Laughlin? In fact, did you know the Colorado River forms this lake? Hmmmm… I didn’t think you did. Searchlight, Nevada / _____ Searchlight is a census-desginated place (CDP) in Clark County, Nevada, USA. The population was 576 at the 2000, and was estimated by the Clark County Comprehensive Planning Department to have a population of 780 as of July 1, 2006. Searchlight was an important gold mining town of southern Nevada in the early part of the 20th century, but the mines exhausted after only a few years excavation. It is marked as Nevada Historical Marker. The town sits one hour from downtown Las Vegas. / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. Whiskeytown Lake, West of Redding, CA taken this morning 03/23/08. Heading West on HWY 299 from Redding CA, this is just a short and beautiful drive; well known due to the dedication in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy; this is gorgeous man made lake with excellent fishing. Species include but are not limited to Bass, Crappie, and Trout….Excellent swimming areas set aside for just that by the Parks department, and excellent camping available in well maintained camp sites. This is one site that you shouldn’t miss out on if you are in the Redding, CA area….........enjoy! _ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. Scenic Byway 12 is one of the most scenic byways in the USA and has been for years. It starts at Red Canyon, just before Bryce Canyon and makes its way over Boulder Mountain and down into Capitol Reef National Park. As you head down the mountain, you will find a wonderland of trees dotting the hillsides and mountains such as colorful aspens, pines, spruce, and fir. The mid elevation provides pinyon pine and juniper. This photograph was taken near the Larb Hollow Overlook in the middle of the fall change. I have spent a great deal of time along this road and for anyone planning a trip, see some of the places to stop by and photograph below. Many of these little towns will have dirt or off roads which will lead you into canyons, slot canyons, and amazing back country scenery. For serious photographers you should plan on several days through this wilderness! Red Canyon – vermillion-colored rock formations and Ponderosa pines. / Cannonville – the gateway to Kodachrome Basin State Park. / Escalante – Devil’s Garden, Willow and Soda Gulch, and Hole-in-the-Rock. Keep a lookout for The Burr Trail, Hell’s Backbone, and Smokey Mountain roads. / Boulder – Anasazi Indian Village State Park and the Burr Trail Scenic Backway. / Larb Hollow Overlook – Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef National Park and the Henry Mountains. / Fish Lake National Forest – Fish Lake (don’t miss this lake!) / Capitol Reef National Park – bright colored cliffs, natural bridges, domes and stone arches, and the fruit orchards.

Morning has broken, like the first morning / Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird / Praise for the singing, praise for the morning / Praise for the springing fresh from the word Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven / Like the first dewfall, on the first grass / Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden / Sprung in completeness where his feet pass Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning / Born of the one light, Eden saw play / Praise with elation, praise every morning / God’s recreation of the new day lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon
