Chinook clouds are a unique cloud formation found mainly in southern Alberta, Canada. A chinook is also known as the “snow eater” as it brings in warm air into the region during the winter. My sky shots are 100% natural and have not been altered or enhanced.

What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

Fochteloerveen belongs to the Society for preservation of nature monuments in the Netherlands, this is a Dutch organisation founded in 1905 that buys, protects and manages nature reserves in the Netherlands. Restoration programma of the Fochteloërveen raised bog! / At the end of the last Ice Age, about 10 000 years ago, an extensive area of peat bogs was created along what is now the Drenthe-Friesland border. For centuries, peat was used for heating on a small scale, but large-scale land clearance for agriculture between 1600 and 1900 fundamentally changed the character of the region. All that was left of this once huge peat resource was the Fochterloërveen (3 000 ha) and a few smaller cores. Even here, the peat degraded and turned into earth after the peat bog was drained for tree-planting and farming (of buckwheat varieties). The result was a monotonous expanse of Molinia grasses. Only in the highest core area was the peat still intact, complete with the vegetation associated with raised bogs. Sufficient peat moss (sphagnum) still grew here to sustain peat formation: it therefore provided a core area from which the entire Fochterloërveen raised bog could be restored. Apart from agricultural activities, this is a lonely, isolated region (the Fochterloërveen itself is surrounded by penal institutes), which in principle made the work of restoration easier. In 1965, the drainage ditches were sealed off and extraneous water was kept out. The task of restoration itself began in the 1980s, with the building of low dykes, creating isolated compartments on the bog surface. The aim was to manage the water levels in each compartment in such a way that peat moss could grow there again. Remember the saying: Red Sky at Night; Shepherd’s Delight / Red Sky in the Morning, Shepherd’s Warning! One of the most persistent of the weather sayings used by sailors as well as shepherds. There were no weather forecasts, as such in the days gone by, and one had to make their own predictions. This is a loose watercolour 8×10”painted with two colours only Red and Green (Cadmium Red and Sap Green) and also mxing the two together to produce darker colours. This is the Isle of Skye at it’s best, when there is a lot of colour in the landcsape, with the low sun we get this far North at this time of year, accentuating every detail. / This is the crofting community of Tarskavaig, with the glorious backdrop of the Cuillin Hills. / “Crofting” is small time farming, or “smallholding” where a few crops might be grown, and a small number of cattle or sheep kept. Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !!
