  • This was probably my first ‘artsy fartsy’ image – it still is one I enjoy. The concept of time is something man has being trying to put into a box since the inception of the first time recording devices. Do you think they ever will? There are no added effects in this image – simply a photograph with a slight curves adjustment in photoshop and conversion to black and white.

  • My 86 year old father has been gardening all his life. He’s a natural at it and continues to provide his family with homegrown produce every year—watermelons, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and squash. This one weighed in at 22 pounds! Mama does all the processing and cooking and works just as much magic in the kitchen as she and Daddy work in the garden where she’s the flower Queen and he’s the Produce King! When I see Daddy in this picture, I think of the verse from the Psalms: “They are planted in the house of the Lord, they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bring forth fruit in old age, they are ever full of sap and green.” (Psalm 92:13-14) Postscript: Daddy’s a firm believer in not wasting. When he goes to eat out at a restaurant, he often keeps the seeds of fruits and vegetables he really likes. He dries them and then plants them in little cups before putting them in the rich soil of his garden. This summer he had a bumper crop of the sweetest watermelons which he grew from the seeds he got from the Chinese restaurant where he and Mama like to eat. I can see in his and Mama’s attitudes some of the reasons why they’ve been tagged “the greatest generation.” Daddy served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was on the USS Yorktown when it was torpedoed and sank.

  • MCN :: CGUUR-TB1QS-JGA8H / / in Alphabat Soup Dec 5th 2009 “Strøget” – Copenhagen / Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940) was a man who, to this day, is the tallest person in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the “Alton Giant” because of his Alton, Illinois hometown. Wadlow reached 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 m)1 in height and weighed 490 pounds (220 kg) at his death. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death. NOW 2230 PEOPLE HAVE SEEN THIS (Jan. 7th 2010)

  • West Register House in Edinburgh, Scotland. Located on the west side of Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square at the west end of George Street, West Register House was built in 1811 as St George’s Church, to the design by Robert Adam (1728-92), although much modified by Robert Reid (1774 – 1856) who was tasked with the actual construction. The church was planned originally as an integral part of James Craig’s proposals for the New Town (1766), although the symmetry of that scheme was disrupted when the land was not available to built St. George’s mirror on St. Andrew’s Square at the east end of George Street. Despite Reid’s cost saving measures, the church was still built on a grand scale, with an Ionic portico, Corinthian colonnade and sizeable, but elegant, green-copper dome, topped with a gilded lantern. The dome is said to be a scaled-down copy of that of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Structural defects and a declining congregation led to its acquisition by the government. It was converted in 1964 for use by the Scottish Record Office (now the National Archives of Scotland). • I took my teenage daughter to a party where they had one of these DJ Laser Beam, smoke, coloured light things that looked like it would be pretty cool to photograph, so I hung around, much to her embarrassment taking snaps of the smoke, lights and laser beams, so I hope you enjoy them….this is how Queensland bush kids party! / Straight from my Canon PowerShot A480 point & shoot on Fireworks mode at night. / Check out Lasers In The Night to see some more shots from the night. • Found in an old abandoned farmhouse in NE Kansas. / I imagine the family sitting around at night after supper listening to the old records playing. Maybe a child or 2 who had some old Walt Disney records….or some classics that the parents remembered listening to while dating. / As a child I’d sit in my room at night with my record player and collection of storybooks…listening to each story being told in such animated voices. My favorite was The Little Mermaid (not the Walt Disney version either!)...with the 7 sisters who cut their hair so the youngest daughter could get her tail back and swim again. / Amazing what finding a bit of history will do to you’re memories. Knowing this place was abondoned about the time I was born doesn’t help either.

  • Whilst clearing out the house my wife grew up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, my wife found her old record player. It used to belong to her mother and father. It used to sit in the living room and when she found it, all the memories came flooding back. She is still unsure of what to do with it. We really can’t keep it, but she is reluctant to give it up. My wife asked me to take photos of it so that whatever happens, we have something to remember it by. As I set out to photograph it for posterity, I shot at every angle, including this angle. When I looked back on the photos after they had downloaded, I noticed the shot of the record player at this angle. The only thing that came to my mind was Happy Days, one of my favourite sitcoms when growing up. Now I very very rarely put up photos with writing on it, but I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I had to add the words to the image. What memories this / brings back. I hope it does the same. • While admiring and photographing a beautiful 1957 Chrysler New Yorker, the proud owner asked me if I wanted to see something inside. Of course I said yes. He then showed me this record player which he explained was an option available on only a few of these cars. It played 16 2/3 speed records. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28. / “First Car CD Player” has been featured in: / POINT AND SHOOTERS/November, 2009
