After shooting in a very poorly lit location last Sunday, I need to do a little clean up of most of the photos I took. I’ve been looking at purchasing some noise reduction software. So far I’ve narrowed it down to either Noise Ninja or Neat Image . Currently I’m leaning towards Neat Image, as it is giving me results closest to what I want. But its hard to know what is possible after you get to know the software a little better. To be clear, I don’t want to completely remove all the noise, I just want to clean up ISO 800 – 1600 shots. They tend to look unnatural with out some grain / noise in the shot. So all of you out there in the Bubble, any recommendations?

Im posting this out here (and to the universe) to send me a place..a course..a teacher.. a something (!) so that i can really LEARN..fine tune what i know..go further, with 100% commitment…willing to pay money even, about these three subjects: Advancing my self taught knowledge of Photoshop Learn/study Illustrator Immerse & LEARN into the technical aspects of Digital Photography (cuz at the moment its ALL instincts, luck & a lots of try & wing’in it) Can anyone recommend short courses available in Melbourne? A good teacher? I now have the time and some $$ to finally give 100% to myself (no more stayhome-single mum of four kids and occassion to put my needs in the backburner!) and would really like to learn/do all the things ive wanted to do for like, 23yrs now.. when i look at job vacancies..i dont feel like i have a chance in any of them, cuz of the job/software requirements – sometimes i dont even fully understand the sentence/job terms! Haha.. I am all self taught, and i dont know what i know, if that makes sense… Ive always been the type to take on projects/jobs by instinct and wing-it, learn as i go, jump in with both feet..to get whatever that needs to be done. And 99.9% of the time, ive done it :) quite well..if i may say so, myself :P so now..ive got no more ‘dependants’ and its time to look after me! ive done some courses before, and theres a lot of courses out there that put me to sleep..especially tafe/community type ones.. Thats prob more cuz im self taught, and maybe i should be in the ‘advanced’ course..but cuz i dont have a beginner ‘certificate’ or anything.. Ive always had start with the Beginners course. I am planning to apply for NEIS and hopefully start that early Sept. But i still want to fine tune my skills, knowledge AND also start mixing with people of same interest, aims.. The self is made, not given. It is a creative and active process of attending a life that must be heard, shaped, seen, said aloud into the world, finally enacted and woven into the lives of others. / —Barbara Myerhoff /

  • Redbubble Calendar Review - Yeah, another one.
    by Gracey

I recently ordered my 2009 calendar from RB for review purposes and thought I’d share some of my impressions. !http://photographyofgra…

I recently ordered my 2009 calendar from RB for review purposes and thought I’d share some of my impressions. / Packaging The packaging is fairly strong, and arrived all in one piece – heavy cardboard stock, with interior cardboard protecting the face of the calendar. Very difficult to unpackage though, and I found myself very frustrated trying to get into it without damaging the calendar. The calendar did arrive with a slight crease across the bottom left of the cover. If the package can survive the Canadian postal service in one piece, it’s pretty darn good :) Inside of all that, the calendar is in a plastic bag – presumably to prevent water damage if the cardboard should get wet. The only problem with this is that the plastic is not sealed, so water damage could still occur. Better would be to have the exterior packaging plastic-protected as well. Size The calendar is a lovely size, but the date section should be larger in order to write on the dates if you need to. The image starts 1 3/4” from the top of the page, then there’s a space at the bottom of the image of 1 3/4” before the date section starts – the space for the dates of the month only takes up 3 1/4” – not nearly enough to make the calendar terribly good for everyday use. I don’t know about others, but my family (and most of my friends) use their calendars to keep track of appointments and other important dates – unless you print very tiny, there’s not room for this on the calendar. If the image were to begin 1 1/2” from the top, and the calendar date section started 1” from the bottom of the image, you’d have an additional inch of space for calendar dates. As other’s have mentioned, being able to select specific holidays to be included on your calendar would be a great addition. I also think I’d prefer the calendar type to be black, rather than the current gray – this light text is difficult to see from more than a few feet. Print Reproduction & Paper Quality This is the one area where Redbubble has excelled with the calendar – at least for me. The paper quality is fairly heavy, and only slightly glossy – very similar to a satin finish. The colours in my calendar are almost exact compared to my screen representations. Even the reproduction of the black and white and toned images is excllent. Any differences in colour and brightness would only be noticed by me – and there are none that I can pinpoint. Brightness differences (almost imperceptible) are almost certainly due to the different media – monitor imaging is powered by light, print is not. The image sharpness and clarity is quite good. All-in-all, I am thoroughly delighted the with print reproductions – this is probably the best image reproduction I’ve received in terms of a calendar trial. Overall Rating Overall, I’d rate the calendar an 8 out of 10, with the prints being a 10 out of 10. The final issue is with the calendar binding. The calendars are bound with a wire coil, which wouldn’t be my first choice, but it’s acceptable. What isn’t acceptable is the loop inserted for hanging. The calendar page width is 11 3/4”, the coil binding is nearly 11” in width, however the hanger (which is a loop in the centre with straight rods on either side) is lightweight and it’s total length is only 6”. The minute I picked my calendar out of it’s shipping pack, the hanger fell out. The alternative is to have the hanger extend the full length of the coil so there’s no opportunity for this to happen, or to find some other method. That being a minor complaint – the calendar will hang fine once it’s on the wall Sales A big drawback to the Redbubble calendar is the inability to post it directly for sale. This is an issue for me – I do not want to have to order, and reship calendars myself. That’s the whole point to having a POD – so they do the work. For now, my calendar sales will be directed to the other site, but if RB gets their butt in gear and gets our calendars sellable on-site, my calendar sales are likely to be redirected here. For those who care – I personally wouldn’t hesitate to order my calendars from RB if clients or family want one of these. I am quite happy to put my work on the line and in the public using this calendar.

I was lucky enough to meet Simone at the most recent Brunswick Street Gallery Exhibition with the Melbourne & Victoria group. Not only is she one of the coolest and nicest people I’ve met in a long time. But damn that women has some talent. The kind that makes me want to drag her around to galleries demanding that they show her stuff. Check out her stunning work and if you ever get the chance to see it in the flesh, do it do it do it do it!

Currently, I have an Olympus SP-500UZ. 6 Megapixels, 10X zoom, super high resolution gives me 2816×2112, has a macro mode which I am learning to use, and it runs on 4 AA batteries. I am slowly shopping for a digital SLR that will allow manual focus, shutter speed and aperture, remote shutter release and a resolution high enough to allow for large framed prints from RedBubble. Oh, and I want it to run on regular batteries. I would like more zoom so I can photograph up close the quail and the young coyote. I would like my macro lens to fit—it lives on my old Olympus OM2. There is more, but these are the basics. / All recommendations and advice are greatly appreciated. Addendum 9 Sep 07 / You have been very helpful so far, and I really appreciate the time you took to give me some direction. I will try to fill in some more details on what I am looking for and give myself a year or so to find it. The following are things I think are important in my search: Price range up to US$2,500 / prefer AA batteries, but not mandatory / small size and light weight (for which Olympus is known) / more megapixils, maybe even 10 – 12 / stabilizer / remote shutter release / fully indexed manual in hard copy / XD cards because that’s what my current camera uses

I just discovered the most amazing work of art today and I’m truly shocked that I haven’t seen it before since I know Yasue has been on my watchlist since she joined the bubble. But I want to share it all with you because it chronicles Yasue’s illness and ICU stay….before you say what, I have to assure you that despite the subject and the fact that Yasue has laid her soul bare in this painting, it is still an incredibly beautiful work of art and extremely moving both emotionally and artistically. / I hope I do this right, so here is the link: / “http://www.redbubble.com/people/minoyasue/art/617236-2-i-c-u#comment-2584076” ~Sande

I’m so sorry that I’ve been neglecting redbubble and all of my wonderfully talented and creative friends here. I’ve been caught up in the drama of Mouse’s stifle problems, treatment and recovery…I hope fingers crossed!...over the last few weeks and I’ve been letting everything else fall by the wayside. / A few weeks ago, before my life got so complicated and stressed for a while, I read a wonderful book, The Gandy Dancer & other Short Stories, by redbubble’s own, Barbara Sparhawk. The book is available through amazon.com and I highly recommend it! I think the Gandy Dancer was my favorite story but the entire book was touching and entertaining. It offers snippets of Barbara’s life and her journey across country after she left a lucrative career in New York City to seek out life instead of fortune. Barbara is a unique and admirable non-conformist and she truly lives life and relishes every moment of it. I found the book so inspiring and I think it might just should be required reading for all creative souls. Barbara, gets Us, Barbara is an artist and adventurer and author extraordinaire. Read the book; you won’t be disappointed. ~Sande Barbara Sparhawk /

One thing I’ve done is to make up Links to the Groups I most often recommend to people. / The program I’ve been using for this for years is called Type It In—TypeItIn. There’s a free version, but I’ve got the Pro version because I need more out of it. If you need a small application to type in small phrases or sentences, and then place them in a document (or one of these blog spaces) at the push of a button, I recommend it very highly. It’s available at Waveget.com. I’m still working on organizing my stuff, so I’ll catch up with you later. Again.

Redbubble needs to sell baseball caps for the photographers. / I need to replace my current hat … and I want the RB log on it. So I have compiled a few Australian hat wholesalers that have products that could supply the hats, even the embroidery/sewing work! [01] a1apparel.com.au/ / Because we work/live in a democracy, here are two more Australian companies who could also provide a quality cap: [02] freshcaps.com.au/ / [03] raveoncaps.com.au/ / Yeah, I am naughty to put this out in the public domain … but I want the opinion of Redbubble members on this issue. Also because most wholesalers sell in minimum amounts of 100 caps, I need 99 more people to stand together as one! / ( We are the world, we are the children... oh oh oh wwwooo ) Come on, it’s worked before: Speak as one to get results. This was actually just posted as the majority of a comment to a person who posted an image titled ‘Strange Fruit’. Then, it occurred to me that other people might also want to know this, if they don’t already, so, here you go. There is a song, Strange Fruit, by Billy Holiday, however she actually spelled her name. Well, I am not sure who wrote it, but she definitely sang it. Now, it is a very compelling, very important, worth while sort of song. So, I would never belittle it, but, all the same, I was rather afraid you had been inspired by it, and that was your way of jumping out of Vietnam or something. It’s a powerful song, and if you ever get a chance you should listen to it. But, not at a party, not when you are already depressed, and not when you are hoping for happiness. Preferably, unless you should just never do this, brace yourself with a few stiff drinks first. It’s that sort of song. It’s also the sort of song, wherein people will tell you that it makes everyone who really listens to it cry. The tendency of persons told this is disbelieve such statements, as people are always exaggerating. Well, believe the statements, as it is true. Even people who the song is rather more against than for, people who caused these sorts of problems, have been known to cry over the song. Some of them changed their way of life, after hearing it.
